Ohio State football: Hyde seeks consistent workload

Ohio State junior running back Carlos Hyde hopes for more carries under new coach Urban Meyer.
Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde had two 100-yard rushing games as a sophomore last season.
He ran for 104 yards against Nebraska in October and 105 a month later against Indiana in only 28 carries total.
But after each of those games, he got three carries and then four carries. In two other games, he didn?t carry the ball at all.
That was a bit too much Jekyll for Hyde, who was mystified by the seeming arbitrariness of his playing time. He had no problem accepting that Daniel Herron?s return from NCAA suspension would cut into his snaps, but to go from featured back to invisible was tough to swallow.
?I thought I?d be in the rotation way more than what I was,? Hyde said yesterday after the first day of Ohio State?s preseason practice under new coach Urban Meyer. ?It just taught me to be patient and not to get down on myself, sit back and wait because soon enough your time will come.?
That time has arrived. Jordan Hall is expected to miss the start of the season because of an injured foot caused when he stepped on glass outside his apartment. That leaves Hyde as the only running back with significant experience. Sophomore Rod Smith and freshmen Bri?onte Dunn and Warren Ball are the only other scholarship running backs.
?I feel like my time is now,? Hyde said.

Bill Lucas;2189643; said:I like the idea of Carlos Hyde carrying the ball with a chip on his shoulder. He's impressed me since day one.
GrizzlyBuck;1387803; said:I envision a Pete Johnson/Archie Griffin combination with Hyde, Berry, Boom, Saine and Hall, I have been dipping into spirits tonight however. I think Hyde will have an outstanding career as a Buckeye. If tOSU goes with a smaller back, I think Hyde will play a big role as a short yardage, or goal line back, or tOSU could continue the Beanie, Clarrett, JWells, Eddie tradition of having a big back pounding the defense for yards. Even though he played "fullback" Hyde seems to have a different combination of skills than most tOSU fullbacks lately, in that he ran the ball more than most our recent helmet busting fullbacks, therefore, I think he will either slide down to tailback or be a fullback who touches the ball much more than recent tOSU fullbacks.
No hiding for Hyde
Buckeyes' junior running back hopeful this audition leads to a featured role

The waiting wasn't always easy.
It might not have necessarily been considered patient all the time, either.
Carlos Hyde understood when a veteran returned from suspension and was plugged back into the starting lineup as Ohio State's featured back, and Daniel "Boom" Herron's seniority didn't bother him.
But there were other situations that were a bit tougher for Hyde to swallow as he was standing on the sideline without much of an idea why he was there, particularly given some impressive performances that on at least one occasion immediately preceded a game in which he was pushed to the margins.

Carlos Hyde became frustrated last year because his playing time was erratic.
Regardless of how difficult waiting his turn might have been at times during an up-and-down 2011 season, Hyde survived and perhaps gained a new perspective in the process.
Now the time for standing in line appears to be over.
"I mean, last year was like a roller coaster," Hyde said Friday after the first practice of training camp. "Sometimes I'm out there, I have good games, then the next game I don't get in there at all.
"A couple older guys told me to just be patient, my time is going to come soon. I just sat back and was patient, and I had another chance, another opportunity against Indiana and had a good game against them. I mean, I was just patient the rest of the year after that and waiting for my turn."

Hyde Emerging As ?The Guy?

COLUMBUS ? With Jordan Hall sidelined likely until at least the second week of the season, Urban Meyer has had to reshuffle some of his ideas for the Ohio State offense in 2012.

He and offensive coordinator Tom Herman are tinkering with a number of different options for the hybrid ?pivot? role Hall was slated to play this season. One thing they won?t have to worry about is who?s going to get the rock out of the backfield.
?It?s time for Carlos Hyde to step up and take the baton and go as hard as he can,? Meyer said of the junior tailback out of Naples, Fla.
?He?s got the tools. He?s a big, strong, fast player.?
