RB Carlos "El Guapo" Hyde (Official Thread)

Boom was great his first three games back, but not so much the last three
games that were losses. Perhaps Hyde could have carried the ball more at that time. When given the carries, Hyde produced. The fumbling will get fixed as he carries more.

I think he should be and will be unless Rod Smith takes a huge leap forward. I don't know how he'll fit in this new offense with him being a big back or if that'll even make a difference, but he's more productive than Hall, and I think there's a zero percent chance that Berry starts next year or even sees extended playing time IMO.

Carlos Hyde had the highest "average yards per carry" (5.4) on the team this year, see link:

Early on he was getting the carries; however, he also had some "fumble problems". My guess is that the coaches just didn't have the confidence in him holding on to the ball (in a close game and all the games were close) that they had with Herron & Hall. Next season (if he learns to hold on th the ball) he could easily be the MAIN MAN at RB. Neddless to say, Braxton Miller will be the MAIN MAN at QB.

:osu:

I think so too. Hall may get some carries, but I think Meyer might use him in the slot more (which is where I like him anyways) and situationally in the backfield with Braxton on zone reads. I think Hyde gets the bulk of the carries though.

Was he even part of that play? I thought that was Hall and Boom. Hyde had a very bad fumble on that drive after the goal line stand when the offense was moving the ball.

I blame the coaches for having a RB make a zone read deep in our own territory. It should have either been a designed give or keep if Braxton isn't back there running it...didn't look like that had been practiced enough.

Well, we don't know what the call was.. very well may have been a design keep/handoff with no reading involved.. you can blame whoever you want but the coaches aren't out there putting the ball on the turf.

With that said, his fumble on the following drive when we had seized all the momentum was horrible.

Maybe but Hall was looking at the DE...the DE crashed down on Hall and the ball was fumbled when he tried to give to Hyde(not sure if it was to Hyde). If you don't practice a play much (I just can't imagine we ran the zone read with Hall back there much), you can't expect execution out of your players in a game situation. Therefore, if that play was a zone read, I do blame the coaches.

But yeah, the other fumbles are on the players completely.

Yea I agree with you on the read option. I didn't like that play call, but I was talking about the fumble on the next drive by Hyde.

I personally see Hyde as our Montee Ball. Power back with enough burst and agility to make people miss. He has not shown that he can be as good as Ball out of the backfield and needs to have better ball security, but I think we have a good one in Carlos.

I thought Hyde reminded me more of Calhoun last year, and ball is more comparable to boom, IMO. I didn't see ball as big power RB this year, he was an all around RB. Hyde is a bruiser that wears down the defense but doesn't have the breakaway speed of ball.

Why do you guys keep negating Hyde's speed? He is the FASTEST back on the team, and its been proven several times. He doesnt yet have the vision of some great backs but it has improved over the season. His cutback against Nebraska was a thing of beauty and he left the defense in his dust. He won't get caught from behind unless there's a great angle by the defense. He just happens to have enough size to run over people as well. Given time, he'll be extra special.

Carlos Hyde prepares for 'very significant' role in Ohio State's running game

Although he?s listed as the second-string running back on Ohio State?s depth chart, junior running back Carlos Hyde expects to have a major impact for the Buckeyes in the fall.

Hyde, along with senior running back Jordan Hall, will have the duty of replacing the Buckeyes? former running back Daniel ?Boom? Herron, who rushed for 672 yards in the seven games he played.

Hyde was right behind Herron last season with a total of 566 rushing yards. His rushing yards are expected to increase this season with more carries and opportunities now that Herron has moved on to the NFL.

Herron was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Players and coaches discussed Hydes' future during media availability with some OSU players and coaches.

Hyde was not available for comment.

Stan Drayton, OSU running backs coach, said the team has high expectations for Hyde and that he will be vital to the team?s success.

?Carlos?s progression is going to be very significant to our run game,? Drayton said. ?We need Carlos to take his game to another level so he can contribute to this football team. He?s too talented not to.?

One day after Jordan Hall cut a tendon in his foot, an injury that would require surgery and take an estimated 10 weeks to heal, Boren strolled into a workout and quickly heard the bad news.

"I just felt like we couldn't get a break," Boren said.

But the senior fullback and the tailbacks he's been working out with this summer couldn't dwell on it for long. And thanks to those sessions with the rushers, Boren had an up-close look at the guy most likely to step into the starting role Hall was projected to fill early in the season.

So far, Carlos Hyde hasn't disappointed -- and the time to prove he can be an elite running back for the Buckeyes is coming.

"He's becoming faster, quicker, he?s just becoming more of a leader," Boren said. "He always used to kind of sit back and just let stuff happen, and now he?s going out and trying to make a difference.

"He?s taking pride in himself, you know, and trying to be the best possible player he can be -- especially with Jordan being out the first couple games."
