RB Carlos "El Guapo" Hyde (Official Thread)

I agree that Berry is in a good situation. And I don't think Herron will necessarily start next year because he's a senior. Matter of fact I see Hyde, Berry, Hall and Smith battling it out to be the starter while the others continue to fight for carries. IMO, I don't think Herron has the talent that the other 4 RBs possess. He's a decent RB, but the other 4 bring different aspects to the game, whether breakaway speed, power, or shiftiness. Herron will be solid backup when called on though. I think Hyde could possibly win out and share carries with Berry or Hall.

I just hope they all stay healthy. We seem to have serious depth at the position...I hope that we continue to see that depth all through the next few seasons. I love what Hyde and Smith bring to the table, but I also really liked what Hall showed last year as a different kind of back.

Three of the four have yet to touch the ball but you're pushing them all ahead of Herron ?

I was less than impressed with Herron last year, I couldn't figure out why Saine wasn't getting more carries. Seemed to be the more productive one...

Herron started out with a bang, looking explosive but injuries slowed his season and Saine's also. We'll need them all before the season ends.

Given what Boom and Zoom have been through injury-wise, I think we should all just be thankful to have such talented depth, and, you know, trust the coaches to arrange the playing time......

I push them all ahead in a second. I don't think Mo Clarett or Beenie Wells touched the ball in college but were seen as better as the incumbent starters. I think Herron is a good backup and will provide us with very good depth, but I just don't feel he's starter material. He can be a very good leader to the younger RBs though, and show them some of the nuances of the game though. He's a decent back but doesn't have the speed or power of the younger guys
I'm a Buckeye homer... I dont care which of our backs carries the ball, I'd like to see the collective ypc for the corps at or above 4.5-5... :banger:
I don't want to see a single RB below 4ypc myself, unless its the short yardage hogs....

None of our backs have the talent of MoC I can tell you that (at least it's highly doubtful and of Beenie is unlikely), and Saine/Herron are not Ross/Hall.

I'm not saying Hyde shouldn't get his shot. BUT, if I were a betting man I would not bet on him being the starter at any point this season unless injuries force him there.

Lets give Hyde, Berry, and Smith at least a few carries before we assume anybodies better...I remember one of the pay sites quoting Tressel as saying Smith was the best RB in the country. I also believe Hyde was the best runner I saw in the spring game. His quickness really suprised me because all the "gurus" dubbed him as a powerback...hes got the entire package IMO.

Boom played poorly but I think that was mostly due to injury considering how good he looked in '08. We saw how bad Saine looked when he was injured compared to how he looked healthy. Not fair to count out Boom(not saying you are).

I think Saine and Herron are definitely better than Hyde, Smith and Berry.

Speaking of course of Saine and Herron as sight unseen incoming Frosh - not the banged up players we have been watching for a couple of years.

I wasnt saying that Hyde should start this season by any means. I'm a huge fan of Saine. I was talking about next year as Hyde starting, and I think that Hyde will also steal a good number of carries from Herron this year. I think Saine is by far our best RB, but Herron isn't(based off of talent) our 2nd best. I'm going off of what has been said by teammates, coaches and practice and spring ball film. I know that's not much, but even in gametime situations, Herron hasn't been stellar, he's been steady. Which isn't a bad thing, but I think we have some gamechangers/playmakers on the bench that bring things to the table that Herron doesn't.
And as was stated before, this is a GREAT problem to have! I would be equally happy if Boom proved me wrong and blew up for 1000yds and become a 1st day draft pick as well, but I don't see that happening, this year or next. Hyde seems like a stud RB that can pound it out in the Big 10
