RB Carlos "El Guapo" Hyde (Official Thread)

Yeah he looked great, but fumbles are big in Tressels book. I wonder why he came out before Berry yesterday?

My assumption was that it was because Berry had just returned a kickoff and needed to catch his breath.

You're probably right, I was thinking more conspiracy like and thinking maybe the staff wanted to see a bit more of Hyde in a game situation, since he brings something no other back ahead of him on the depth chart has, bruising running style and big back size. Having seen Tressel's MO over the years, your reasoning is much more sound. Either way, the fumble did not help his case for increased carries, although it looked like he got overextended, fighting for more yards, so it wasn't a completely careless fumble.

Yeah I know, he fumbled inside the 5 yard line yesterday; and maybe he needs to learn to hold on to the ball a little better. I really like the way he runs between the tackles and moves the pile forward. When all is said and done with the careers of the exisiting running backs, it would not surprise me if Carlos Hyde turns out to be the best of the bunch.

Time will tell, Berry always has at least one spectacular run every game. I think he will be something special. His run against indiana was my favorite so far.

Hyde (6-0, 238) has 145 yards on 24 carries (5.9 yards per carry) and already has played in seven games after rushing for 1,653 yards as a senior for Bill Kramer?s Golden Eagles. Hyde is a power runner with strong lateral moves and is reminiscent of the Arizona Cardinals? Beanie Wells, a former Buckeye who was the 31st player drafted last year.

?He is a little bit similar to Beanie,? Tressel said. ?Carlos has done a nice job. Carlos has been playing on special teams. He?s been playing behind a couple of good tailbacks in (senior Dan) Boom Herron and (junior) Brandon Saine but he?s coming along. He?s going to be a football player and he?s really grown into the whole collegiate experience, academically and socially. He?s a youngster, but he?s a guy that we?re counting on to do big things because he can be one of those big, powerful Ohio State backs before all is said and done.?

Cheese Catching Up

Graham isn?t the only youngster making a splash in the Ohio State backfield. With Herron sidelined by his suspension, there is a buzz about some of the young backs behind him. Names like Jordan Hall, Jaamal Berry and Rod Smith have captured the attention of the public, but one name that?s not being talked about is Carlos Hyde.

?Carlos, who we call ?cheese,? is a big running back,? said Boren, who will be leading the way for whoever gets the football this fall.

?He?s huge but he?s the fastest of them all.?

That might not sound right considering the stature and quickness of guys like Hall and Berry, but apparently Hyde bested them all in straight-line speed during a recent summer workout.

?We ran 40 (yard dashes) before we went on break and he ran like a 4.42 (seconds),? Boren said of the redshirt freshman out of Naples, Fla.

?You don?t really realize how fast he is until he gets out in the open.?

wasn't he born in ohio but moved to Naples...how does that work. does he or does he not have florida speed?

Yes he was born in Cinti. Spent HS year in Naples Florida with his GrandMother. Thus the Florida speed was injected magically during those years!! :tongue2:
