QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Free Agents like Garcia need to land before we know what teams need a QB as well. Right now of the top 4 teams in the draft (Detroit, Oakland, Cleveland and Tampa) 3 need a QB, TB is set for a while with Gradkowski.

I'd say look for a late 1st round team with a good QB thats looking to draft and groom the next one. As bad as I'd hate to see it, Baltimore comes to mind. I think its safe to say the Boller experiment is over and McNair just can't last that much longer. Also McNair and Troy are very similar in their raw leadership abilities and toughness. Troy could have a much worse NFL QB mentor than Steve M.

The Jets are the other AFC team I could see taking him mid to late 1st round. The Dolphins are probably too determined to see Culpepper work out to consider it but they could damn sure use Troy.

NFC wise you have a lot more. Is Philly ready to start grooming McNabbs replacement? How sold on Romo is Dallas? The Bears would be wise to consider a QB late 1st round. The Packers sure don't seem to have an heir to Favre ready but they'll be higher 1st round. The Rams are another possibility.

Another factor is the Texans. What I mean is that the Browns have to be looking at the Texans and what a love fest they could be having right now if they took the local legend in VY last year. TS is as safe a pick for the Browns as they come. He'll probably be a very good NFL QB and even if he isn't, being the local legend will buy them a lot of grace with the fans. NO ONE in the state of Ohio is going to get on TS they way they did recent draft busts(not saying he'll be one, just IF).

If I'm the Browns I take a lesson from the Texans snafu, work out a decent contract behind the scenes for taking him higher than he probably would have gone, bask in some fan love for once, sell more tickets/merchandise and probably have your QB of the future to boot.

TB may be set with Simms (recent discussions say he is getting a big, new contract), but I don't think they are confident in Gradkowski.

How much would it suck for Air McNair to watch his teams draft Vince Young and TS in back to back seasons while you have the #1 job? Faith in ability and faith in durability are 2 very different beasts.

If the bears are going to change QB's, it'd likely be a vetern FA. I don't see them bringing in a guy who could take 1-2 seasons when they are built to win next season.

The Rams are an overlooked possibility. Excellent point.

Jax, the Jets just picked Kellon Clemons of Oregon last year in the 2nd round and they seem to like him alot.
The Rams? Bulger's old and is a fine QB with a team that needs to win soon draft picks (especially defensive ones) are too valuable to use on a QB who will have to sit for a year right now. I highly doubt that the Rams will take a QB in the first 2 rounds.
I don't like Green Bay either if they draft Troy Smith the GM would be admitting he made a mistake on a first round draft-pick without ever giving the kid a chance to play that doesn't happen.

Good points. I'd still say Baltimore or Cleve but who knows.

Troy is McNabb. He may not be as thick, but a guy who can run if needed, and will look to throw it first. People yell about his height, but according to this, he measured in at a little over 6'0". I like his chances to be mid-to-late first round.

I agree with the McNabb comparison, Troy's first instinct is to throw the ball, he's quick to move out of the way but still looking down field. He would work well in that system, if I was the Eagles I would be looking for a reliable back as well, however, they are play off bound so it's not like they are going to be picking too high.

One of the teams that I think should take a look at him is the Chiefs, Trent Green can't have many more years on him, they have a good system in place, great running backs and a decent line. They will miss the playoffs so he may still be there.

I've always preferred the McNabb comparisons too. Both of these guys are natural leaders on the field. But I think it needs to be said that, at this point in his career, Troy is a couple steps ahead of McNabb. Coming out of Syracuse, Donovan was still a run-first QB and made the transition to a pass-first QB in the NFL. Troy made that transition in the off-season and proved it all year long.
I also like the Brees comparison in mechanics and footballing, but I don't see Brees as the field general that Troy is. I don't really have anything to back that up, just my perception of Troy as a much more effective leader.

I hope you are right, I heard some "experts" on ESPN radio say he will go 2nd or even 3rd round. Come on, this is a quality QB. They said he is no V. Young, that he can't run. Troy has proven that he is a quality runner when he has to, and I have to say he is WAY more accurate than VY.

I was watching a replay of the Ohio State-Michigan game a couple weeks ago, and Kirk Herbstreit made the most valid NFL quarterback comparison I've heard in regards to Smith: Drew Brees. They're of similar height, both played in shotgun-spread offenses in college, both know how to use their feet to buy more time in the pocket and both are extremely patient passers adept at going through their progressions and finding the open receiver. And I'm guessing the only reason you don't hear that comparison more often is because Brees is white.

I posted this earlier in this thread or possibly in the Troy Smith and the Draft thread. Either way, it is well worth repeating and Herbe was right on with his compairson.

I do disagree with the last sentence. I think the reason is because Troy started as a running QB then progressed to a passer with the ability to break off a few on a broken play.

When drafting quarterbacks, the first thing to keep in mind is that there are no safe picks. While Carson Palmer has became a franchise player, fellow QBs from the Pac-10 with similar height and weight have fallen into obscurity.

Troy has also shown that he can handle adversity on and off the field, and that has made his into the leader of his team. However, his leadership and authority were developed over the stretch of many seasons. He was comfortable because he inspired confidence in others through his actions. I don't know how Troy would react being a top 15 pick and having to start the second game of the season without fully earning the respect of his teammates in practice and in games.

The first time he rallied his team from behind to a victory, he'd have his team's confidence...
