QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

There was a guy named John Elway that wasn't too bad when he decided to run.

His first year Reeves took him out and benched hime for taking off too much. He turned out to be a great pocket passer with a strong arm capable of running...much like Troy. He wasn't very tall either.

Not a bad comparison.

Troy is McNabb. He may not be as thick, but a guy who can run if needed, and will look to throw it first. People yell about his height, but according to this, he measured in at a little over 6'0". I like his chances to be mid-to-late first round.

Do you know if this is first hand measurements or are they just reprinting what the media guides print?

I've always preferred the McNabb comparisons too. Both of these guys are natural leaders on the field. But I think it needs to be said that, at this point in his career, Troy is a couple steps ahead of McNabb. Coming out of Syracuse, Donovan was still a run-first QB and made the transition to a pass-first QB in the NFL. Troy made that transition in the off-season and proved it all year long.
I also like the Brees comparison in mechanics and footballing, but I don't see Brees as the field general that Troy is. I don't really have anything to back that up, just my perception of Troy as a much more effective leader.

And where did McNabb go?!?!

I still feel the best comparison is to Brees. And it is a good year to be compared to Brees with him top 2 in MVP race.

If all the NFL teams are stupid enough to let him fall to the second or third round, so be it. Troy will just have that much more to prove. It'd be a real slap in the face, but not a soul on this site has any doubts about his future success in the NFL. He is a winner and will continue to be a winner wherever he lands by making whatever team that wisely selects him better (even if it is the Clowns).

troy smith is a combination of brett favre and steve young.

He is nothing like them at all.

Like said before, Donovan McNabb is what TS is most similar to. McNabb can run, so can TS. McNabb has a deadly arm, so does TS.

Okinawa- I can see where you are coming from with the Drew Brees comparison. Drew is short, but he finds space to throw the ball and he's on target. TS does much of the same thing.

arm strength-smith>brees..troy has a cannon for an arm
accuracy-brees>smith...brees is more accurate but not by much
scrambling-smith>brees...try is faster and shiftier then mcnabb
throwing on the run-troy>brees..troy is excels in this
reading defenses-brees>smith...troy need time in the nfl before he can be as good as brees
football i.q-smith=brees..honestly i think troy has more football i.q but brees has experience in the league, so it evens out

Great. If this is true, TS should be the NFL MVP next year. I mean Brees is running top 2 right now, so if TS is better than Brees at everything, it should be a lock.

It's a good thing you decided to chime in, I feel so like so much has been cleared up now.

Troy would look great in Orange and Teal next season! Dolphins have pretty much dropped Harrington from the rotation for next season by playing Ms. Cleo for the last two weeks this year. Troy should still be there around 15-18 where the Dolphins will draft.

If Saban picks Jamarcus Russell I'm going to freaking scream!!!!!

What about Culpepper coming back next year. He should be 100% healthy. Really no need for the Dolphins to draft TS. Culpepper is still somewhat young too.

fwiw-

on wknr here in Cleveland a guy called in and said he saw Phil Savage (Browns GM) in the airport and asked him about Troy. Phil's response was

No way is Troy a 1st round pick (2nd - 4th round)

he sited

1. troy is listed at 6' but is actually 5'11" (i hate when people keep bringing this up)

2. Troy played behind a brick wall of an OL and his WRs were wide open all year long...was never really challenged .

3. Troy's throwing motion begins way behind his helmet and needs to be much quicker for the speed of the NFL game. his mechanics would have to be completely reworked for the next level.

Not my opinion, but simply a guy on the radio claiming this was Phil Savage's opinion....
