QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I think it's something to do with academics.
Nevertheless, Smith will be the starting scout team QB next year. He may never see the field next year.
If it was academics. Why would JT need to petition the NCAA to let him play next year?

He would just need to get the grades up.

o.k. So, you are saying that Ohio State is going through the process of clearing him with the NCAA to be eligible to play next year so that we can further teach him a lesson by keeping him off of the field next year? Or are you saying that Zwick will take this opportunity and put on a performance that makes us all forget about Smith?

My only thought is that there is no need for an investigation concerning academics...grades are cut and dry. If it was some type of fraud, he would be thrown out of school with no need for the NCAA to be involved.
Bingo grad21. If he "didn't make the grade" Fall Quarter, he would be suspended for the bowl game and there would be no need to petition the NCAA to reinstate him. If it were academic fraud/cheating, he would be suspended, doubtful thrown out of school, and again no need for the NCAA to be involved to reinstate him. There is just no way that this is an academics suspension.

They notified the NCAA if the infraction. That doesn't mean there will be an investigation. It may mean Tressel and Geiger found out he is academically ineligible to play in the bowl game and notified the NCAA of the fact.
Just a guess and another way to look at the situation.

From a BSB poster:

Hmmmmmmmm.....I called one of the guys and he was royally pissed off. He said "Let's just say that Troy decided to take a quarter off". That was all he would say, but I took that as grades taking a nosedive. We may never know....

Well if thats the case then the whole team is screwed. Because if he is academically ineligible to play in the bowl game, then he would have had to have been academically ineligible the entire season!!! If grades were the problem, he would be ineligible for the next quarter, which would be winter, and the bowl game is played before winter quarter starts.

OSU investigated not the NCAA. Again, if it were academics, there would be no need to ask the NCAA to reinstate him next year. I appreciate trying to look at it another way, but this academic path doesn't make sense. Besides, didn't Fall Quarter end about 2 weeks ago? His academic status would have been known well before now.

Why am I under the impresion that coach Snider (K-State Snider, not our Snider) would have kept this under wraps until the game was played...?? Our AD and HC do things by the book. I think other universities would brush some of the stuff our staff finds out under the rug... I stand by Coach Tressel and Geiger... I think they are both high character guys!

Lets let the smoke clear before we start to call them out...

If the 1 game suspension is self-imposed then why does OSU have to apply to the NCAA for reinstatement?
Its one game because that is all that is left this season...it would be defined as indefinite if this was an earlier point in the season.

At least that is how I am understanding it from earlier posts

Since when is "academically ineligible" a secret? I have seen many times in the past when a player was declared academically ineligible" or having a situation dealing with academics. They have never kept that stuff private in the past.
