QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Spreading their wings
But a player with the potential to be the steal of the draft is fifth-round choice Troy Smith. With no expectation of seeing the field for a while, the Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State has an excellent opportunity to polish his game under the tutelage of one of the league's best quarterback teachers, Brian Billick. Smith also can learn plenty by watching the old pro he could eventually replace, Steve McNair.

Minicamp is for mentoring
By Aaron Wilson, Times Staff Writer
Tuesday, May 22, 2007

?He?s great, he?s living and learning,? McNair said of Smith, who?s expected to be the Ravens? third-string quarterback this year behind backup Kyle Boller. ?He?s in the meeting room asking questions and that?s what a young guy needs to do. He?s a young guy who needs to sit back and try to cram everything in.

?If coach says something he doesn?t understand, he needs to ask before he leaves that meeting room. That?s a plus for him. The more he knows in the meeting room, the less thinking he has to do when he comes out on the field. I think he?s progressing really well.?

?I?ve known Troy for a long time,? McNair said. ?I tutored Troy a little when he was in college. He was also a counselor at my camp. We became friends.

?It?s all about trying to help people who want to help themselves. Whatever Troy needs, and all these young quarterbacks, I?m here for that. My time is limited, so I?m just going to try to pass the torch.?

Even though he is playing for them I still like him. I'm pretty sure he would rather be on other team though since he is from Cleveland and a Browns Fan.

I'm sure Troy is mature and intelligent enough to know that he landed in a great place for a rookie QB who's willing to learn the system and perhaps take over in a year or two. I'd be willing to bet he's not only thrilled with where he landed, but also touched just to accomplish a massive goal like making it to the NFL.

Special to NFL.com

It surprised many around the league that former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith would fall to the last selection in the fifth round, the 174th pick, 25 spots ahead of the immortal Tom Brady spot.

But it will not surprise those same people to learn that Smith has been an offseason standout, a player that the Ravens believe, in the words of one team official, "can play in this league."

Smith has demonstrated leadership, talent and humility -- all the traits the Ravens were hoping to see. Smith has shown the game is neither too big nor too fast for him.

Granted, it has only been during Organized Team Activities until the Ravens kicked off their voluntary minicamp Tuesday. Smith has yet to play in as much as a preseason game for the team.

But the Ravens are anxious to see Smith this summer. They believe they just might have stumbled into one of the draft steals.

Smith tests commissioner
Jeffrey Symonds

On Tuesday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the 2007 draft picks at the rookie symposium in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Goodell stressed the league's new stance on the players' behavior.

According to ESPN, Troy Smith, former Ohio State quarterback, asked the commissioner why he tends to focus on the negative things in the NFL. ESPN says Goodell tried to dodge the question.

"You didn't answer my question," Smith said.

Troy looked stupid questioning the commish like that.. Goodell is handling the issues that are hounding the league and drawing all the negative media attention..

A rookie, with 3 months NFL tenure, shouldn't be disrespectful and tell him "You didn't answer my question..".. When to be honest, Goodell gave him a good answer..
