Heisman winner Smith in Zanesville today
Staff reports

ZANESVILLE - One of Ohio State University's Heisman Trophy winners made his way to Zanesville earlier this year, in the form of two-time winner Archie Griffin, who helped celebrate the expanded Kroger store. Now, it's Troy's turn to bring out the local fans and help promote an expanded car dealership along the way.

As much as it pains me to say it, Troy Smith is gonna be one of the top steals of this draft. After watching him carve us up, (and then again, and yet another time) I'm just incredibly impressed with his poise and leadership, and he's just a damn good QB who I'd take on my team anyday. People are putting in too much stock into the UF game, as if it were his fault he lost one of his top playmakers (I liked Gonzalez as a WR better, but Ginn is a hell of a returner), his O-line couldn't block a Pop Warner d-line that game and the defense struggled. I expect Smith to start for the Ravens in 2-4 years and be at the very least an average starting QB.

Smith far from Heisman form
Ravens notebook

Former Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith won the Heisman Trophy in his final college season.

He completed 65.3 percent of his passes and threw 30 touchdowns compared to just six interceptions.

But none of that means anything now.

Smith is fighting for a backup quarterback job with the Baltimore Ravens after being selected by the franchise in the fifth round of April's NFL Draft.

The 6-foot, 225-pound Smith saw his draft stock drop primarily because of his small stature for an NFL quarterback and his poor performance in Ohio State's championship game loss to Florida.

His first two days of training camp with the Ravens at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md., have more closely resembled the Florida game than his spectacular regular season.

Yesterday, Smith threw two interceptions during team drills, including one badly overthrown floater that landed directly in the arms of former University of Virginia standout defensive back Jamaine Winborne.

Ravens head coach Brian Billick said Smith has been, "a step late" with his passes.

"That's the uncertainty of a quarterback really not quite sure of where everybody is," Billick said of Smith's problems with overthrows. "He's throwing what he sees rather than what he anticipates. That's very typical of a rookie quarterback, so he's a little bit behind it and the defense is jumping on it. He's not anticipating as much."

Smith Settling In At Ravens Training Camp....by Dave Biddle.

?There were some tough times early on and your ego gets in the way at times. I had a couple times when I got sidetracked and I didn?t understand what was going on, but I had to bounce back and get myself into a situation where I could help the team. And that?s what I did. Once I got the job, I ran with it.?

All four quarterbacks did well today.

McNair and Boller kept up their solid play of the last two days. Smith looked much more relaxed and comfortable with his teammates and the plays. This was evident in his performance, where his passes were much more accurate and timely.

Whether it was drills or a live scrimmage, Smith was much improved from his sluggish play earlier in the week. His only interception on the day came during seven-on-seven drills against the first team defensive unit. Smith made a perfect throw across the middle before his receiver, Matt Willis, made the cut, but Ronnie Prude reacted to the ball quicker than Willis and the ball was intercepted.

Rookie Ravens QB likes his situation

After falling through the first four rounds of the NFL Draft as the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Troy Smith feels he landed in the perfect spot.

"I couldn't be in a better place I think. Pretty much, I love the NFL. I love to play football. I love the chance and the situation to be part of something like this," Smith said after Wednesday morning's practice at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md.

"It's special. It's a winning program. It's a winning organization. They teach professionalism. They teach class. That's what this is all about here."

"I am getting there. There's a lot of things I have to learn, but I am getting there," he said.

"In college, I had a tendency to throw to a man. In the NFL, it's
trusting and believing in your receivers. That's what makes you better.
"You throw to spaces and you throw to open grass. It's not a situation where you are just throwing to a guy that is open. Those situations will come, but nine times out of 10, you are going to be throwing to grass."

"He's getting better with every snap," coach Brian Billick said of Smith. "He's beginning to understand better. There's a lot to see. We are going at a pace that is pretty good. I am pleased so far with how he is grasping it."

Smith is grateful for the chance to work with and learn from a quarterback like McNair, who he idolized in high school and college.

"I think any time, in any situation, you pattern yourself after excellence and that's exactly what Steve McNair is," Smith said.

"He's a professional through and through. I try and pattern myself after people who are successful in the endeavor I want to go forward with."

Smith understands he probably won't receive much playing time this season, but he vows to be ready to help when called upon.

"The expectations are to learn as much as I can, to be in a situation to help this team get to a Super Bowl and not only get there, but win it," he said.

While all three quarterbacks struggled through parts of practice, each had a share of sunshine. Kyle Boller connected with Demetrius Williams for a nice score. Troy Smith pulled off a very good boot-leg and found tight end Marcus Freeman for a big gain. During the last scrimmage, McNair had time, looked left, pump faked and still could not find anyone open. He then moved slightly right to buy more time and fired to Clayton, who had come open, 15 yards down field.
