QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I would like to know what Goodell actually said before forming my opinion. In one sense I do agree with Troy, the perception of the NFL has been changed, especially with the new crackdown on discipline. I think that the NFL now has an image that a good amount of the players are thugs. So in that sense I agree that more of the negative has been focused on with the NFL as of late. But like I said, I would like to hear what Goodell actually said before forming my opinion on whether or not Troy made himself look stupid or disrespectful. I think the positive that comes from this is that Troy further establishes his reputation as a leader. There be other players that feel the same way, and the fact that Troy put himself out on a limb in front of the commissioner shows good leadership qualities as far as standing up for his teammates (in this case possibly other NFL players/rookies that feel the same way). Again I wish I knew more of the facts before forming my opinion on this. Somehow I don't completely trust what ESPN reports... :wink2:

From profootballtalk.com:

"In every sense thus far since I was drafted, it's been more of a disciplinary feel. When, where is the positive stuff from you going to come out?" Smith said.

"When you say positive stuff, I walk around talking about the players and what they do in their communities every place I go," Goodell said. "Unfortunately, the media hits you with the negatives, and the commissioner has to deal with a lot of negatives. But I promote our players every chance I can about what we are doing in our communities, (and) what the players our doing in the community that reflects on the shield
"When I talk about that shield, I talk about that shield because everyone here has an interest in it, Troy. It is not just about your individual team. It is not just about where you came from, the Ohio State University. It's about what you represent as an NFL player right now, and we all represent that shield."

Troy looked stupid questioning the commish like that.. Goodell is handling the issues that are hounding the league and drawing all the negative media attention..

A rookie, with 3 months NFL tenure, shouldn't be disrespectful and tell him "You didn't answer my question..".. When to be honest, Goodell gave him a good answer..

What is so stupid about it? He's a player in the NFL and the Commissioner is addressing him and the others. He has no right to ask questions? It's not being disrespectful to ask questions of the commish or let him know that he did not answer your question. Plus if this was the only thing that was discussed and only interaction that he has had with him, is he wrong? Troy is just being Troy, as the article stated, it's in his nature to show leadership and outspokenness.

Eh, while I'm all for the notion of a young Buck in the NFL earning his stripes, fact is that this was clearly a situation in which the Commish was open for Q&A. With that premise any player (well outside of flagrant miscreants on his SOLL - Soon Out of League List) has a right to pose the questions Troy posed. Plus, if they have the moxie to keep track of how substantive (or not) the answer given truly was, they are also OK in my book stating that a fuller answer would help matters.

That said, I bet we will not see this happen again - for a while at least.

PTI siding with Troy when part of Goodell's answer was, "the media hits you with the negatives," is not surprising at all to me. It strikes me as odd when Troy, of all people, doesn't think that the commisioner's answer is good enough when he's basically saying; [paraphrase] It's not just about the negative, but what gets reported and what actually happens can be very different. [/paraphrase]

That just seems recklessly pessimistic on your part.

I know that I am a day late and a dollar short but I want to say that I am a bit confused as to why Troy would raise any question at all. I just don't get it. New Player symposium with the commisioner laying down the law by giving a preventative ass woopin. I always thought Troy would absorb and learn but apparently he feels he can change things from his position. This is the only explanation I can offer.

I love Troy Smith and I will have to go along with what he is doing because he really has never let us down...really. He must have a bigger plan.

Why would he raise the question?I guess ecause he came from under Tressel who dosen't focus on the negative, but re-enforces the positives, ever seen the movie "the secret" - self helpy, but if i were a betting man i'd say tressel subscribes to the theories

You gotta know Troy has a bigger plan

Which scares me as a browns fan :(

Healthy debate at rookie symposium: Much has been made this week of how Baltimore rookie quarterback Troy Smith, the former Ohio State star and reigning Heisman Trophy winner, took on Roger Goodell during the commissioner's Monday address at the NFL rookie symposium. But according to people with knowledge of Smith's comments, and who have read through a transcript of the exchange between the fifth-rounder and the commissioner, perhaps a bit too much attention has been attached to it. League officials and three players who were in the room and spoke to ESPN.com about Smith's remarks insisted the player was neither disrespectful nor confrontational, and that Goodell regarded the exchange as a healthy give-and-take.

"Trust me, there was nothing planned, scripted or rehearsed about what Troy said," explained one of Smith's representatives. "He just feels there is a need to cast some positive light on some of the guys in the league, that's all." And, apparently, that was the point Smith made to the commissioner: Since he entered the league two months ago, he has noticed an emphasis on the negative, and he feels there are more positive stories to be told. Smith should know and, in truth, he is a shining example of how a player can turn himself around. A foster child as a teen, Smith was once booted off his high school basketball team, was involved in a dorm fight at Ohio State in which he was subsequently charged with disorderly conduct, and was suspended by Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel for accepting money from a booster. Smith worked hard to redeem himself, however, and the Heisman was his big payoff

Goodell: You know, Troy, there's a saying in the NFL. I believe your coach, Mr. Billick, has even used it on occasion. Do you know what the NFL stands for? It stands for Not For Long, if you don't shut the hell up.

You mean the No Fun League!

Always question authority. "All men created equal" remember that? Its pretty much gone by the wayside these days and thats bullshit. Troy has every right to question the examples and rules laid out before him. The NFL is going to be just like MLB and the NBA soon. Theres no more sport in the sport. Its all business and that detracts from the history and appeal that got the league where it is now.

I understand the need for strict punishment these days, especially for the rich, but they too often forget the good points of playing the game just as Troy mentioned.

So when is it ok to say that the commish didn't answer his question? 5 years in?
