QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I'm satisfied with Troy's run/pass decisions for the last couple of weeks.

I believe he needs to continue to work on 3rd down awareness. I think the only reasonable complaint about his decisions the last couple of games has been the occasional throw short of the chains on 3rd down; or a move to run when he's not under intense pressure, and it's not wide open on 3rd and more than 10. But this is nit-picking, and I think that his continued improvement will handle that concern.

I'm guessing that the coaches are stressing that, along with pre-snap reads/audibles, and (as always) going through his progressions. But he's made huge strides over the past couple months, and it's been enjoyable to watch. The last TD to Santonio in the Minny game was great to see, as well as the audible to Gonzo. And those deep balls to Teddy yesterday have to make scUM nervous, with their banged up secondary.

His stats do surprise me for a QB that STARES at ONE receiver

Troy's game is not nit-pick proof, but he is the best QB I've seen on the field for OState since Joe Germaine, so I'm very satisfied. People are still going to be down on Troy, for whatever reason, but I'm pleased to see that the offense has put up 40+ in three straight, even if the competition hasn't been great.

When was the last time we got to breathe easy in the fourth quarter of three straight games?

That said, this team would be undefeated if Brett Favre were it's QB.

Here are the top-5 in passing efficiency, I'm assuming Quinn is 6th.

<TABLE class=tablehead cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3><TBODY><TR class=colhead><TD align=right colSpan=2>RAT</TD></TR><TR class=oddrow><TD>1. M. Leinart USC</TD><TD align=right>170.51</TD></TR><TR class=evenrow><TD>2. B. Brohm Louisville</TD><TD align=right>165.39</TD></TR><TR class=oddrow><TD>3. V. Young Texas</TD><TD align=right>165.24</TD></TR><TR class=evenrow><TD>4. T. Smith Ohio St</TD><TD align=right>165.12</TD></TR><TR class=oddrow><TD>5. D. Stanton Mich St</TD><TD align=right>162.42</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
I think Smith is finally progressing. This is wonderful news. And just in time for a run to a BCS game.

If he didn't have the best receivers in the land... his stats would differ...

His stats do surprise me for a QB that STARES at ONE receiver.. and virtully never goes down his progression... Stats would be obscene if he did look at secondary receivers...
It's amazing how a string of games against some bad defenses - in combination with a strong line, quality RB and the best WR corps in the nation - make some people believe that this guy is better than average.

His game has gaping flaws. Luckily for OSU, they only get exposed against teams with good defenses - which have been in short supply on the recent schedule.

The numbers are looking nice lately, but those numbers should be there given all the talent on this team.

When it mattered and the Bucks needed quality QB play at PSU, the numbers we saw were 2 TOs that led to 7 points for PSU and one loss for OSU.

What's your solution if you think Smith's surge is just related to the competition he's faced? Not many QB's have fared well against Penn St's defense this season......add to the fact that the game was in Happy Valley at night and not many QB's are going to look like world beaters. Besides, that game was early in the season and Smith has gotten better each week. Obviously you have a better idea for QB play.....why don't you share it with us instead of making condescending comments?
