Don’t look now, but maligned Ohio State QB Troy Smith is the sixth-rated passer in America behind such luminaries as Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, Vince Young and Brian Brohm. In the Buckeyes’ five-game winning streak, he’s accounted for 15 touchdowns and has helped open things up for sophomore RB Antonio Pittman. Even if, as expected, Penn State beats Michigan State next week, Ohio State might be a shoo-in for a BCS game if they win in Ann Arbor Saturday.
I have never implied that Troy Smith is a great passing quarterback. I was simply calling someone out for stating that the QB ratios are misleading....which they aren't. Troy Smith has a high QB rating, but I still dont think he can read a defense and go through his progressions on a consistent basis. As you said, he simply hasn't had to do it against a good D in the past several weeks. I doubt he'll be a good NFL QB, if he even gets the opportunity. He is, however, a good college QB, and may develop into a great college QB next year. How many great D's has Troy faced, 1 and a half (PSU and half of the game against Texas)? We lost both of those games. Except for us and Penn St the defenses in the Big 10 suck this year. Troy has yet to play well against a good defense, but at least there aren't any left in the Big 10 so we should cruise through the next 2 games and go to a good bowl game unless scum can pick it up on D.
Drew Stanton would put up ridiculous passing numbers with this offense. I like Troy Smith and what he brings to the team, but you're kidding yourself if you think he's a better QB than Stanton.I guess...but the other 10 QBs are going up against these same defenses...and last I checked they were all behind Troy Smith in their stats in Big 10 games. So how come they aren't all doing it too? To put up the numbers Troy is in the Big 10...then you have to be consistent and pretty damn good. If it were so easy to put up these numbers against Big 10 defenses, then the rest of the QBs would be doing it too. Right now, I feel, Troy Smith is the best QB in the Big 10. If you want to say it's the recievers, or the oppoents...fine...but I don't care what Big 10 QB you put on this team...he isn't going to put up better numbers than Troy is.
I don't think he's a better QB than stanton, but people definitely are way too hard on Smith. He's not a top QB prospect by any means, but he has taken big strides at developing as a QB (progression, scrambling to throw, better ball control when scrambling).Drew Stanton would put up ridiculous passing numbers with this offense. If you didn't want to continue the argument, why are you continuing it? :pI don't really want to continue this argument, but if we get these stats out of the QB next week I don't think we beat scum. Noted this was against one of the worst defenses in D1A.

Scum really sucks (or at least they did last year) against running QB's so we should rack up a lot of yards on the ground Saturday. Even JT said that Troy threw the ball poorly after the game last week. Nothing against Troy, but I think we have at least 3 QB's on the roster that would have us at 8-2 or better this season. Does anyone disagree with that? IMHO given the way the offense has to revolve around Troy he is due to have 1 or 2 bad games a year, which will result in a loss.

How many passing yards does he need when we rush for over 300?
I don't think he's Joe Montana, but I think he's closer to Joe than to Steve Bellisari. You're being a little rough on him, IMO. He struggled early, but is making progress. If you want to say that's just because of the defenses we've played, I'm going over to the Antonio Pittman thread to see what you had to say about him.
Imagine where we would be if had gone ahead and commited to WVU? Instead Tress takes a late flyer on an athlete that was tossed from St Ed's (?) and was now at little known (at the time) Glennville. I have enjoyed watching his progress.
And to those of you that want to just dismiss his success do to lack of competition, maybe you could remove all the crap D's from Lienart/Quinn/Young's stats and see how they stack up...

I'm speaking about the NFL (my response was to FB, who had just suggested that Troy wouldn't make a good NFL qb). I think he is on his way to becoming a very good college QB.Guess you oughta get the Elite 11 selection committee on the horn if you don't think Smith was a top prospect by any means.
I'm afraid of bama's D. I think some of the other ones are highly rated moreso b/c of inept offenses in the SEC.the reality is troy has never beaten a quality defense. the past few weeks the defense werent only bad but terrible. time will tell. my biggest fear is a trip to fl against an sec opponent.
Fair enoughI'm speaking about the NFL

who let bkb out of the political forum? :tongue2: I'm afraid of Bama's D b/c they are a poor man's version of 02 OSU, but they are much too poor on offense to beat us IMO.I fear no team. It's Michigan week, for the love of poop. There is no fear.
