QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

After the Wait, It's Finally Boeckman's Turn
By John Porentas
Unless something really weird happens between now and next Saturday Todd Boeckman is going to be the starter at quarterback for Ohio State in the opener against Youngstown State. There is very little chance that you will mistake him for Troy Smith when he takes that first snap.

The obvious observation is that Boeckman and Smith are very different physically. Smith has a shortish (sorry Troy) compact body that is wired for athleticism. Boeckman is all of 6-5, maybe close to 6-6, and while not a bad athlete, isn't going to overwhelm you with his ability to be an extra ball carrier in the OSU backfield as Smith often did.

Noteworthy from the ozone article above:

It has been reported that Boeckman was the fastest of the OSU quarterbacks last season. Boeckman, however, pretty much debunked that notion this fall. Boeckman said that his best 40 time is in the 4.7+ range, something a bit slower that Smith and certainly slower than Antonio Henton. That is not, however to say, slow, and Boeckman says he is ready to make plays with his feet if that is what is needed.

I think he was reported as being the fastest between he, Troy and Justin.... before Henton got there. However, I never really trusted Todd being faster than Troy... but a 4.7 is very respectable for a QB. I am getting very anxious to see Todd strut is stuff on Saturday and throughout the season. He is probably the one guy one the team whose debut I am most looking forward to seeing.

I think that there's more to mobility than just speed. Agility and reaction play a big role in a player's mobility. Troy Smith was possibly the most mobile quarterback I can remember playing at Ohio State. But that was probably because he was very good at steppinig around defenders. If Boeckman truly is faster than Smith, I'd love to see him get outside the pocket and make a few plays with his legs. But I hope he also has the fancy dance moves that Troy Smith has, or he's going to run right into some pretty big guys.

And I agree with looking forward to his debut. I just hope that Troy Smith didn't spoil us. I have a feeling that he did, and there'll be more than a few jerk-jobs out there calling for a back-up.

This has hardly been a battle. It's barely a blip on the radar compared to Smith-Zwick... or Krenzel-McMullen... or Bellisari-Moherman... or Jackson-Germaine...

Anybody who has paid even a token amount of attention to this program under Tressel had to know that Boeckman would be the starter. Of course, because it has pretty much been a lead-pipe lock all along I have paid very little attention to any "controversy" that may have developed, so that could explain why I think it's small potatoes compared to quarterback decisions in the past.

The decision to give Boeckman the bulk of the reps in practice was made weeks ago. As for the decision not being made sooner: Every kid that comes here wants to know they'll get a fair shot. Every QB on the squad got just that, a fair shot.

Those of us who've been around awhile remember the Krenzel bashing we had to endure throughout the 2002 season. We heard over and over and over how we would not go all the way with a QB like him. Well, we did; in his first full year as the starting QB.

Waddaya say that we fans give the starter the same "fair shot" that the coaching staff gave the back-ups?

Very true DBB...my only concern is that the inevitable comparisons between Boeckman and Krenzel start way too soon. Let's start w/ 9/1 and work forward and see how TB progresses.

I am w/ you, let's give TB a fair shot and see what happens.

It's possible that the sliver of doubt in many fans minds about Tress' decision to start TB over Robbie and Antonio is a result of Tress picking Zwick over Smith back in oh-fo', however as has been stated in this thread, that comparison doesn't hold water here. Todd is a clear #1 right now.

One of the things that I'm anxiously waiting to see this season is how good the defense is at creating turn-overs (I have a point, I swear).

In the jersey scrimmage, the defense managed just one pick (not from Todd) and no fumble recoveries. I'm really hoping that the reason that Todd was not intercepted is because he is Krenzelesque at taking care of the ball. hoping... really hoping... pleaseohpleaseohplease... still hoping...

Is it Saturday yet?

Because DBB, there are some fans that have much more knowledge about the team, who should start, and what positions certain players should play, than the coaching staff! Even though these fans are not at every practice, they still know more than the coaches.

BTW cory204, serenity now, serenity now.

I personally don't like the Krenzel/Boeckman comparisons. Craig was a smart kid who managed the game well, played smart in big games, and didn't panic often. However, as much as I appreciate Craig I never really thought he was special as a quarterback, just special when it came to being smart on the field.

However with TB, I feel he really does have that potential, I remember seing him in High School and he had the physical tools. With the maturity of being a grayshirted Jr. and the supposed athleticism thats been talked about I think Todd could be something really extrodinary... However remember I said could. I don't like to predict the future, but I feel he has all the tools to make it happen.

This probably isn't the thread but I think CK is getting inadvertently slammed here. I just watched my "Time & Change" DVD, and Krenzel made some pretty impressive throws that season. He wasn't Dan Marino back there, but he wasn't Joe Nobody either.
