QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

Bro, you are using a hypothetical as an argument. My hypothetical is that if JJs pass is called correctly as an INT we win the game and Kyle is viewed differently.

That play happened early in the second quarter. There's absolutely no way to know that we win that game if it's called properly. If it was late in the fourth, sure. Okay. But as it is it's a completely pointless argument.

Of course he did. He is part (only part) of the reason we lost. However, I do remember CJ Stroud and other QBs throwing interceptions as well. I also remember people criticizing him and thinking he wasn't the answer. I also remember him losing some games that we should have won.
You've been around long enough to know that after every loss people call for coaches to be fired and players to be replaced. Every loss. Without exception.
I remember before the season started people were predicting a three loss season. New QB. Worse OL in well over a decade, etc. For some, Kyle exceeded expectations. He is 12-1 as a starter and will get better next season. IIRC if Day repeats his record in the next five years as he has the past five years he will have the highest winning percentage of any coach in CFB history. Btw, Kirby Smart did not win a Natty until his sixth year of coaching.
We were extremely lucky to win at ND...we won the game by a foot (or less) on the last play. Despite playing quite a few ovrage to bad teams, we scored over 40 points in two out of twelve games, and one of those two was 41 points against a then 2-5 Purdue team. You say he'll get better next season, but he really didn't get much better at all since the Penn State game...he had one solid half (the first half against a bad MSU team), and was trailing at the half at Rutgers who finished 6-6 for the year. We were, to put it bluntly, extremely lucky to go into Ann Arbwhore undefeated...

Agreed, the only thing he'll have going for him coming in to next season over other QBs is reps. I think Day fully opens the competition for the job.

I think you either give him the job straight up or you tell him to move on elsewhere.

The guy already has a major confidence issue. If you open it back up and he happens to win it again, he's going to spend the entire year afraid to make a mistake, which doesn't help us or him.

You've either gotta tell him you believe in him and you're riding with him or you tell him it would be in his best interests to look elsewhere.

I understand what you are saying about the ND game. But to me, it looked like extreme talent that won that game, not luck. The throws at the end that Kyle made were spot on and NFL caliber passes. And, of course, that is the frustrating part, his inconsistency.

Problem is that I don't think it is that simple. He hasn't messed up bad enough to lose the starting spot heading into spring/summer camp. If he looks over his shoulder ok I guess, but I would still say he is the favorite to start Week 1. If he botches it and we have to go with someone else, so be it but I don't think you send your season starter packing before the competition even begins.

Ohio State has always been a place where nothing is promised, but earned - if he can't handle starting with the threat of losing his spot to someone else if he plays badly, then things will sort themselves out accordingly and we will be looking at Brown or Lincoln to start. Obviously I hope that gets sorted out early on but there needs to be a real competition this spring at bare minimum. Kyle did not earn a guaranteed starting spot this season.

He just has 0 mobility. Obviously he's not a threat to scramble, but his mobility in the picket isn't good either, which is why he is so bad when there's pressure. I'm sorry, if you need a good line, good receivers and a good back to be good, you're not very good. Look at McCarthy, got to give him credit, he's not Lamar Jackson, but he made a ton of plays with his feet yesterday.
Which is so ironic because his HS film showed him moving the pocket and running on a good number of plays. Coming to OSU I would’ve thought he was Burrow-lite. Made solid reads, had a cannon for an arm and would tuck it and run in way we wished Stroud would have. Boy was I wrong in my early assesment. He looks timid, inconsistent, indecisive at times if the #1 read isn’t open and just not to the level of a starter at OSU. Ihope He can possibly turn it around in the off season. But he shouldn’t just be given the spot. He knew how bad his OL was at times, and in big moments held the ball too long almost like he didn’t know the play and the moment was too big.

I want to see what Brown and Kienholz can do. Treat these meaningless bowl games like extra practices. Just with more fans. We know there won’t be the blanket of having Marv or Treyveon. But we can see these QBs with Tate as the #1, and Hayden at RB.

I believe the bowl game will be McCord's last as a Buckeye .

and with Harrison likely sitting out it has the chance to be an ugly last game.

The Buckeyes will bring in a QB from the transfer portal, and he will no choice but to transfer.

I wouldn't be surprised if they bring in 2 QB's from the portal.

This team should be playing in the championship game against Iowa.

Reading my mind. If you watched his film from HS, he looked like Mayfield at OU with his running ability. So I just don't buy into the talk that he isn't athletic. But if Day is truly a great QB coach, he will get McCord to play at a high level, or do the same for one of Brown/Kienholz/Noland.

Brown has been disappointing so far, but it is a small sample size. Lincoln deserves a shot. As you said, the outcome of the bowl game means nothing so just give guys a chance to shine and see who steps up.

If Day is moving on from McCord I see no reason for him to play in the bowl game. Let Brown and Lincoln go at it.

Day doesn't seem like the type who is going to just move on from someone he tabbed as his guy. Doesn't fit his tendency to be stuck in his ways.
