Rex Kern with less hair! :tongue2:

Ahhh.... I don't know. I knew Rex when he was living in Smith Hall (campus dorm). I don't see a lot of similarities.

Bauserman not going anywhere
With Ohio State's recent failed attempts to land a quarterback in the class of 2009, fans are on edge that OSU has just two scholarship players at that position.

And for awhile now, a certain panicky rumor kept making the rounds that Terrelle Pryor's backup, Joe Bauserman, may be thinking of transferring.

That, of course, would be disastrous at this point for the Buckeyes.

Rest assured, it's not going to happen. According to Joe's father, Jack Bauserman, the two have never discussed transferring. Jack said Joe's philosophy is to compete as hard as he can this spring to try and earn more playing time.

I thought it was worth checking out, not only because of the potential implications, but also because Bauserman will be 24 this October and possibly did not want to sit behind Pryor for at least two more seasons.

Anyway, nothing to it.

I'm as guilty as the next guy about getting excited about the possible new recruit coming in, but we have a real player in JB. No matter what our depth chart might be, we are fortunate to have a guy like him on the roster. We will be just fine at QB this year.

Yeah...I was a little bummed to not get Boyd. But then I remembered how awesome Joe B looked in the spring game last year. I was very impressed with his poise and decision making in the pocket. Now that we know he's staying put, I'm actually thinking we're better off.

Joe will be fine if pressed into action next year. I'll be much more confident with Joe as the backup as opposed to a true frosh coming off of a knee surgery.

Just trying to look on the bright side. NOw I'm going back to read Joe's thread after the spring game last year...that will give me more warm fuzzies. :)

Those saying Joe is some sort of stiff are completely wrong. Joe is a heck of an all round athlete. Any kid that's a pro baseball prospect is a heck of an athlete. Combine his natural ability with maturity and a pro sports training background and he has terrific potential. We've seen his strong, quick arm in the Spring Game last year.
Do not sell his ability short!

Absolutely...If I recall correctly he tossed about a 60 yd TD pass hitting the receiver dead on stride down the middle of the field.

Joe is like having an extra coach for Pryor. I sen Bauserman pull Pryor to the side several times giving Pryor advice...sometimes in a not so nice of way. I know TP has thick skin I'm sure JB advice is welcomed. The guy has already been a pro athlete. Thats a rare occurance...If I were Joe I would consider coaching because he sounds like a very intelligent.

Bauserman doesn't ponder what might be different if he hadn't played pro baseball

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Joe Bauserman (14) says he's content with his role as the backup to Terrelle Pryor.

Joe Bauserman has shown staying power the past few months, and the Ohio State football program is the better for it.

Not that it did him any good in trying to jump past Terrelle Pryor for the starting job at quarterback this season. The spring drills of April only served to cement the pecking order.

But considering that Pryor and Bauserman were the only two scholarship quarterbacks returning, the Buckeyes would have been left in the lurch if Bauserman -- a sophomore, eligibility-wise, like Pryor -- had transferred seeking a starting opportunity. That's what Rob Schoenhoft and Antonio Henton did last year when it became clear to them that Pryor was the quarterback of the future.

"Honestly, I just didn't even think about transferring or anything like that," Bauserman said. "I'm just going to stay here. I'm going to do what I can do, get an education. That's it."

The coaches were relieved. Freshman Justin Siems, a lightly recruited prospect who spent 2008 playing for a prep school, walked on in the spring. Kenny Guiton Jr., of Aldine, Texas, was a late addition to the 2009 recruiting class. Both are considered projects.

"It was very important for Joe to stay," said Nick Siciliano, who assists quarteterbacks coach Joe Daniels. "Joe is a valued member of this team. We love having him. He works extremely hard.

"I can't say enough good things about him. I love the fact he's in that room with us."

Siciliano never sensed that Bauserman gave transferring serious consideration.

"If he was thinking about it, I don't know anything about it," Siciliano said. "He never mentioned it to myself, coach Daniels or coach (Jim) Tressel. At least from where I sit, he never wavered on the fact."

One thing became apparent to Bauserman when Tressel named Pryor the starter over senior Todd Boeckman four games into last season. It was reinforced in the spring, too.

"He's a great athlete," Bauserman said of Pryor. "He's obviously the best fit for the team."

But what if Bauserman had elected to sign with the Buckeyes right out of Tallahassee (Lincoln), Fla., in 2004? What if he'd forgotten about trying to become a major-league pitcher, despite his 94-mph fastball? What if, after the Pittsburgh Pirates drafted him in 2004, he hadn't spent the next three years in the minor leagues?

For one thing, he likely would have been in a pitched battle with Boeckman in 2007 to replace departed Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith. Since giving up on baseball and jumping to OSU football in the fall of 2007, Bauserman has proven with his passing in scrimmages that he has power and flair.

"I feel Joe could line up and play for us tomorrow if he had to," Siciliano said.

That stokes Bauserman, who considers "What if?" just infamous last words.

"You can do that with a lot of things, the 'What ifs?' " Bauserman said. "What if I'd stayed with baseball? What if I'd never come to Ohio State?' The 'What if?' game -- you can't play those games with yourself."
