QB Joe Bauserman (official thread)

Of all the back-up quarterbacks at Ohio State Joe Bauserman is a good one to have behind Terrell. He seems very confident in his role and if he ever has to step in and take over the position for some reason, well i just think he would impress alot of Buckeye fans. Which brings to mind a question. Who was a good QB in the back up role that really did a great job. Just wondering.

In my opinion the all time best backup quarterback at Ohio State was Ron Maciejowski. He had the nickname of "super sub" and was one of the "super sophomores" playing in the National Championship season (1968). For those that have never head of him, he played from 1968 to 1970 backing up Rex Kern. The consensious was that he would have been a starter at any other university.

The easy answer is the one we had last year after 4 games.... Todd Boeckman was an awesome guy who unfortunately spent his last games as a back up at OSU. We are talking about a QB who led the team to a National Championship game the previous year and was described by his QB coach (who coached Marino btw) as having the best deep ball he had ever coached. Todd knew the offense inside and out. The most remarkable thing in my eyes was the fact that he swallowed a tough pill when TP became the starter. He never complained to the media. Never became a cancer to the team. He helped TP as much as possible, mentoring him as the Frosh TP learned the offense on the fly. He came to practice everyday and did everything that was asked of him. If TP had gotten injured last year, Todd was MORE than capable of stepping in and getting the job done.

Todd is a class act and while I am pulling for all of our guys who are getting thier shot in the NFL, Mr. Boeckman is a guy that I would love to see shine at the next level. He can make all the throws. Prototype size. Smart guy. GREAT teammate.

...and that's why it was a great question.

Mace, Boecks and The Gunslinger were all great back-ups. And there were a lot of guys who were good back-ups but then got a chance to start: Karsatos and Frey are the first that come to mind.

Since we don't have much film for Bauserman, I decided to put together a youtube video of every Bauserman pass from the 08 Spring Game. Thanks to sandgk on the DVD help.

Edit: is the playback uneven for anyone else? I may have to redo this later on.

Thanks Jwinslow for the film clip of Bauserman. I was very impressed with his composer in this spring game of 2008. But to me, he did show plenty of moxy
and character in this display even if it was a spring game. What came to my mind was, i wonder if we could ever see this type of play from him, if he ever
had to do it for real in a game. I know we have had many good back up QB's for Ohio State. But i just feel that we have a good one in Bauserman in case
Terrel should fail for some reason in the 2009 season.

Hearing his name that many times got me thinking..

Didn't I read somewhere that his name is pronounced as Bause (rhymes with pause), as opposed to "Bowserman"?

EDIT: Here is the article, Gordon used different words, but I gather it's the same thing.

For starters, the first syllable of his last name does not rhyme with "wow," but with "paw."

The best back-up quarterback is the one that comes in for the starter and leads the team to a TD or game winning FG.......

Actually, "Mace" did just that at least twice when Rex Kern was hurt in the 1968 season. Another one that some of 'long in the tooth' Buckeyes remember is Joe Sparma that backed up Don Unverferth. 'Course, when Joe Sparma came in, the other team immediately sent in about 7 DBs because Unverferth was a running QB and Joe was a thrower. (Joe Sparma ended up playing pro baseball for Detroit as a pitcher).

Just an FYI on this link.......from the font of old, musty knowledge
