QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

Due to a lack of arm strength. Which as a coordinator, you adjust to your QB's strengths not weaknesses. Herman has done the opposite.
Barrett lost his confidence and was holding the ball instead of trusting his receivers and just letting it go on time. This happens with young QBs. Coaches said as much. He lost his confidence so they stopped pass plays.
Barrett has to throw on time because he doesn't have a cannon of a arm. Coaches gotta give him easy throws to build his confidence then let him play.

The play calling didn't show the coaches confidence in JT's throwing with the crowd atmosphere and how we got out to an early lead. It's hard to say from that point what attributed more to the heavy lean on the run. The early 2nd half INT wasn't helpful, how much did the knee issue shrink the amount of plays we were willing to call, I know adjustments with a loud crowd aren't easy because youcan't hear the audible, would have liked to see an attempt at the up tempo offense. We seem to not really have a great plan in place when we are faced with a stiff defensive front that brings pressure. There's really only 2 things you can do when faced with alot of pressure and we execute the run game pretty well under those circumstances but we can't have our short to intermediate passing game disappear. I know rolling the pocket probably wasn't an option after his knee was hurt but that would allow him to get away from the pressure and focus on a couple routes. On the 2 INT's he did lock onto his recievers leading the defenders to drop into the passing lanes.

Perhaps someone can explain something to me... people talk about "he doesn't have the arm strength to make that pass or enough zip". Am I thinking about this wrong, can arm strength not be improved by working those muscle groups more in the gym and getting stronger overall, or does it have more to do with mechanics?

Depends on a variety of issues - some of it is muscle based (especially core) but a lot is mechanics starting from the base and including release point. Strong base and balance are huge.

Same reason you see guys like Kershaw throw serious heat; he's a pretty lanky kid, but his core and mechanics are in tune. Too much muscle on the upper half will usually hinder arm strength more than anything as it limits flexibility.

Arm strength can be built but takes time. Exercises involve rubber bands and small weights typically based upon strengthening your rotator. Long toss is also very effective as you increase the distance from your reciever as your arm becomes more loose. The same excersies that apply to a starting pitcher also apply to a QB's throwing and developing of arm strength. His arm strength ceiling is lower than average in my opinion but has hurt him only on deep throws.

He doesn't have the arm strength of Braxton, then again who does? I think he had the strongest arm in college football last year.
His anticipation on routes coming open is much better though, and he comes off his first receiver more quickly.
We've been spoiled by Braxton and Pryor, they both had rare arm strength.

Both. Mechanics and strength play into it, absolutely, but you can either throw the ball 100 MPH or you can't, too.

JT is ok, but not great.
Time will tell. Terrelle Pryor and Braxton Miller weren't this far along with as many starts. Kid will only continue to get better, love the head on his shoulders.
