QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

Penn State's secondary is horrendous in coverage. Which is what we didn't bother to do after the first quarter and a half. Instead, when the Buckeyes needed to air it out, Herman went the VT route and just ran verticals. The runs on second and short and third and short drove me insane. We had a 2nd and 2 from inside PSU's 25, and ran the ball twice up the gut. Why not air it out on 2nd and short, and convert the 3rd and manageable if you don't complete the pass?
All the "stats" say different. The whole defense is a top rated unit and their coverage was very good.

Devin Gardner threw for nearly 200 on Penn State. Need I say more?

Funchess had 7 rec for nearly 70 yards and a TD.

It clearly looks like they've struggled with stopping passes to the TE's, and their game against Michigan was much of the same. The fact is, we abandoned passes across the middle, that were open much of the night.

He was hurt and couldn't plant to throw. Hurt in the second quarter. The coaches shut the offense down.
It's not that he was hurt. His arm strength isn't great and it showed earlier in the game when he missed a couple throws. Look, I really like JT, but his arm strength isn't one of the reasons. Miller has a much stronger arm-as a comparison.

Now Herman needs to realize this, and adjust his game-plans accordingly. I'm tired of this reverting to chucking the deep ball when the run game doesn't seem to work. It didn't work against Virginia Tech, it's obviously not going to work in Big Ten play...

I don't think you can just give up on the deep ball, JT will have to adjust some too in order to make things work.

I'm not suggesting they give up on the deep ball. I'm suggesting they stop throwing the deep ball every time they pass the ball when they decide the running game isn't operating at the level they'd like to, in order to milk the clock.

The deep ball, in situations like last night, just played into Penn State's favor. Instead of actually covering Ohio State, all they have to worry about is the pass over the top. The short routes were working in the first quarter, and the TE was even getting involved again. But they reverted to their 2013 ways and tried pounding the ball when they had what they thought was a comfortable lead.

Yet. Here we are contending with Sparty for the toughest division in the BIG. Obviously, we must be doing lots of things "right".
Some may see a "negative" in last night. Tressel would say to win a game like that any way you can is a very big "positive".

And it's a well known fact in football coaching that to help your running game you need to back the safeities off with the threat of one over the top. You don't even need to connect, just make them respect the threat. That's why Urban and Herman make the big money. They know better than us internet fans.

Why would they? On the first deep ball the receiver walks into the end zone if the ball isn't so badly under thrown.
