QB Cardale '12 Gauge' Jones (B1G Champion, National Champion)

Being miserable about the future is a choice. Will Cardale succeed? I don't know. But he's the QB now so I can either spend all week being down about it or enjoy the fact the Buckeyes are playing for the B1G championship and a possible playoff spot.

FFS, we're not a 5-7 team who just lost (again) to their rival and on the verge of looking for a new coach. Buck up, buttercup.
Don't misunderstand me. I'm not miserable in the least; it's been a great, great season. Just would be surprised to see us beat the stinking Badgers on Saturday.

Looking forward to having Cardale prove me wrong!

All seriousness, what's not to be optimistic about?

We know we're overachieving this season without Braxton as is. We also know Cardale is a D-I college football player and not some slouch.

If we lose, we lose. But we've got every reason to believe we can win.

Overachieving? Seems like a stretch to me. Maybe the record is better than what some fans expected, but the offense is as close to doing what I have been waiting for since Urban was hired. Would we be undefeated with Braxton playing? I guess it's possible, but I know we aren't 11-1 without JT. Doesn't really matter at this point since now it's time for Cardale. More importantly IMO it's the Tom Herman show. I really hope the guy that called the game in East Lansing shows up against the badgers. He needs to give Cardale chances to succeed in this game. He can't let the badgers just key on one thing the entire game.

With as many questions as this team had coming into the season on defense and the loss of Braxton in camp, you bet your ass they overachieved. That's what comes when you have a brand new superstar like JT emerge when it was entirely unexpected.

For those that thought The Buckeyes would lose 3 or 4 games this season I guess you could call it overachieving. I however thought The Buckeyes would win the BIG this year even after Brax went down so I can't exactly call it overachieving now can I? I'll leave overachieving to programs like Iowa and Purdue.

JT helped compensate for other rotating areas of weakness among the team from poor play calling to execution among the various units. That's what great players do. We haven't lost since VTech because of 3 reasons to me: the OLine has greatly improved, the defense hasn't totally let us down like last year, but most importantly JT has stepped up and carried the team at times. If all the other areas step up and elevate their game we might not need Cardale to be an all world player. That's the key though, everyone else has to really step up so that it's not all riding on CJs shoulders. Everyone needs to help take that pressure off him and TH needs to resist the urge to overthink things. I'm honestly just as worried about the play calling going forward than I am about CJs ability to preform. TH needs to keep from being too predictable and with a young QB stepping into the fire that will be a challenge.

One of the keys will be "in game" adjustments by Cordale, the OL and the coaches. EE picking up the blitz will be huge. If we can control the LOS Cordale will be put in a position where he can succeed. We cannot afford a repeat of the Va Tech game.

He's going to light it up if Herman spreads the field. He'll rip off a couple of big runs and then Wisky will be worried about that. Just when they really pack it in, he's going over the top and around them with Smith and Marshall.

It's going to come down to how the defense plays. Cardale is going to shine.

I wonder how much if the playbook CJ is ready for.

I gotta believe that it is close to what Barrett had. Jones has been in practices for a full season longer than Barrett was. He's been in all the same meetings this season. I'm sure he isn't getting as many reps all season long (though, this week is a different story). A back-up's job is to be prepared, mentally. So, if that's what you mean by "ready", I'm not worried.

But maybe physically prepared - there's no arguing that Barrett was way better than anyone expected. I have a hard time believing that there won't be a large drop-off in talent. The coaching staff may limit Jones's playbook - not because he isn't mentally prepared, but they may feel he can't make the plays required. Hopefully the playbook is still open enough that the Badgers' defense can't key on just a couple of things.

Actually... you can have a couple things ready and keep them off balance for at least a half, they have almost no tape on him other than "keying" on him means he's gonna run the ball himself, a lot.

So, you know, don't do that. lol.

I'd imagine that OSU will go somewhat run heavy with CJ at QB. Some of that is owing to Jones not being as accurate a passer as JT, but more to the point - I would think OSU would want to keep the ball out of Melvin Gordon's hands as long as possible.
