QB Cardale '12 Gauge' Jones (B1G Champion, National Champion)

I think it was even well before that. Isn't he a 4th year sophomore? In Braxton's class and greyshirted. Or went to prep school for a year.

I got the date from this site: http://sports.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/commitments/2012/ohiostate-33

but you are correct he did originally commit earlier: 2/2/11 and then went to a prep school (Fork Union Military Academy) per http://sports.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/commitments/2011/ohiostate-33

I'd imagine that OSU will go somewhat run heavy with CJ at QB. Some of that is owing to Jones not being as accurate a passer as JT, but more to the point - I would think OSU would want to keep the ball out of Melvin Gordon's hands as long as possible.

To do that you need to pick up 1st downs and move the chains. Being predictable is going to end with a lot of stalled drives. TH needs some wrinkles in the game plan bc Wisky will stack the box and expect just that (run heavy w/ QB). I think they will go unconventional to keep UW off balance. Expect the deep ball early to get the Wisc DB's off the line and on their heels. Like everyone else has said, big task for the Defense this weekend.

Going deep sounds good because CJ has a cannon, but if we don't hit it, which most likely we won't (just simple odds), then you might have thrown them off, but at what expense? Now it's second down and 10 to go...

Gotta stretch the field at least a few times early or there won't be any running lanes to run through. The threat of going deep has got to be there or they will be in press coverage all game. I don't think going deep a few times on early downs is any worse of a solution than running into a pile of big bodies of an 8-9 man front on 1st down where it's likely to be 2nd and 12 rather than 2nd and 10. Think back to the VT game. Going deep didn't work out so well but even Meyer said afterwards that if guys make a few plays it changes the entire dynamic of how that game plays out. Our WR's just didn't make enough 1 on 1 plays 2nd week of the season. I don't think you can scale down the playbook to the point they are so basic that Wisky knows exactly what's coming....all I'm sayin'.

I think Herman risks injury w/Cardale and asks him to run QB bootlegs, delayed draws, etc. throughout the course of the night, prob a lot more than we will be comfortable with - Cardale is obviously a big boy, but I believe he can move faster than most think. If he can find a seam and break free for a few yards and get up to speed - watch out.

I also expect some early shots way down the field (preferably on the first play of our first offensive possession). We take the risk of an INT in that case, but to keep Wisky's LB's from stacking the box early, I think we need to let them know we're gonna throw it over their heads all night.

I agree w/most of this board that Cardale will be asked to manage the offense, in order to reduce the pressure on him. But I think we have a confident QB in Cardale who is excited about his opportunity. He's simply lacking reps throughout the season, which is huge.

Should be a great game, and no matter what happens, this team has had an outstanding season to be very proud of.

Go Bucks!

This game isn't be about Jones - it is about Meyer. This isn't where he finds out what Jones can do, he already knows that. It is about putting a game plan in place that allows us to use our other weapons effectively despite the limitations of a new QB while exploiting what strengths Jones has.

I expect to see very few passes where the receiver is not within a few yards of the sideline - unless Urban has seen things in practice that Jones has not been allowed to try on the field, because I haven't seen it on the field. A key question is how well Jones reads the D. Jet sweep with a 250 pound QB, Zeke along side, and Marshall out wide could be interesting.

I don't see long passes early that are potential confidence busters.

Most of all I wish Bielema were still there.

For some strange reason I get the feeling we will throw over the top a few times and when that doesn't work resort to running the ball for the next 55 minutes and get no where. Our play calling for the last 3 years has a tendency to crawl into a hole when uncomfortable and I see no reason to doubt it now. I think Cardale can win the game when we get closer to 50/50 run/pass, but the plays will be closer to 80/20. It's going to take at least a quarter for Cardale to get comfortable and establish consistency passing, and the play calling isn't going to give him that time.
