QB Cardale '12 Gauge' Jones (B1G Champion, National Champion)

Here is what I see.

Jones has been trying to live up to incredible expectations. When a third-string quarterback meets the press to say he's staying after three games, and gets into the Heisman discussion, there is no way those expectations will ever be met.

He had a chance to lead this team and he did not perform to expectations. He flat-out missed wide open receivers and under-threw receivers repeatedly. He missed receivers who did get separation. He missed people that were wide open just fifteen yards away. He has shown immaturity. His running game, red zone poverty, and decision making that allowed him to get sacked also give reason to go with the quarterback who moves this team down the field to a score.

All of that said, I believe that Cardale Jones will one day be a successful quarterback in the pros. Right now, he needs to demonstrate maturity and wish JT Barrett well. This is an important learning opportunity. He needs to realize that he is one injury away from being back on that field and if that time comes, God forbid, he needs to be able to lead this team physically and emotionally. Right now, he is not their leader and he hasn't been for several weeks. This is not about Cardale Jones, it's about who can get the best performance out of the Ohio State offense.

A future pro quarterback will realize what that implies about how he must react to this disappointment. I believe that he will.

How in the world would you think that Cardale will become a successful pro quaterback, when your second paragraph pointed out all of his handicaps, and that's without mentioning his inability to read defenses on a simplified college level. The NFL is a farrrr more complicated beast than college. How many college backups are starters on NFL rosters? Heck there are a large number of former starters for big name teams that ride the bench in the NFL. I think he'll be a journeyman like Pryor because there's nothing spectacular about his talent other than his arm strength. No knock on Cardale as he'll always be a Buckeye legend in the hearts of many of us Buckeye fans for the last 3gms of 2014 season

You have no reason to be reading my posts, but if you do, you know that I have felt that Barrett belonged in there from the start. If Cardale leaves this year, then I think you may be right, but I don't think he will see much interest.

I guess the underlying assumption that I make is that he realizes that the next step is going to require him to become much more competent in reading defenses, getting his throwing mechanics right, etc. If he works hard, then I think he has the raw talent to do it. There's a lot to work with there.

I guess it depends if he shows the necessary maturity and buckles down. So far, we haven't seen that, but I think that he is surrounded by a coaching staff that will help him see that his destiny is in his hands.

I think he will do fine in the pros. He will have NFL calibur veteran receivers to help him along in the infancy of his NFL career. He can go to a team that consistently runs pro style, not one that is just giving it a shot for their QB. Jones skill set fits well into a pro style NFL scheme. We saw what he was capable of with an NFL receiver last year.
Also, at the end of the day college production doesn't equal NFL production.

For those of you who do not think that Cardale will not make it in the NFL, I suggest that you read this article because there are people who know more than you would think that he will..

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State director of player personnel Mark Pantoni tweeted out a graphic before the Buckeyes game against Penn State last week, boasting the fact that scouts from 16 NFL teams would be in Ohio Stadium.

That's the most Ohio State has ever hosted for one game, and it wasn't surprising when you think about all of the NFL talent that was on the field.

They were there to see Ohio State's Joey Bosa, and Ezekiel Elliott and Taylor Decker and others. And Penn State's Christian Hackenberg and Anthony Zettel and Carl Nassib.

They were there to see Cardale Jones, too.

He also has a an NFL WR this year in Thomas... NFL is much more than skill set, its much more mental. I think he'll have a decent backup career, but if you're not winning the starting position of your school in college then that speaks loudly to scouts.

Yeah, and they saw Jones get outplayed by JT and in turn lose his job for the next game... So not exactly a good example of a game where scouts were present. And I stand by my opinion regardless of Pantoni and the article, and that's fine if others disagree. But the college game is much more simple and someone can use their skill set to win games and doesn't need to use their intelligence to read defenses, hence seeing guys like Vince Young, Tim Tebow, countless Oregon, Texas Tech, Baylor QBs have college success and flame out in the NFL. RG3 was one of the most dynamic players in CFB and can't even get to the second string for a terrible team! Cardale looked average for a team loaded with talent and couldn't keep his starting position, but yet he'll all of the sudden find NFL success against bigger, faster and smarter players... OK
