Pretend for a second that you're a sports writer/fan in Chicago/New York/Philly/Boston/Baltimore and you're asked to list the biggest rivalry games in college football -- being from those areas you begin with Notre Dame - USC and then to Notre Dame and whoever they're playing, then where do you go?

You go to Ohio State and Michigan - you go there because unlike Purdue - Indiana, Texas - Texas A&M, Alabama - Auburn, USC - UCLA, Cal - Stanford, it matters. You go there because unlike Texas - Texas A&M, or Alabama - Auburn, it's an amazingly even series, because BOTH schools have impressive histories - not just once every four years - because so much rests on the outcome.

Name another rivalry where so many awards, bids, championships ride on the outcome -- that's why you count down to Michigan week, that's why you laugh when they stumble bum to Appy State, just as the folks in Ann Arbor were hoping Navy or Marshall could pull the upset in the 'shoe.

Your whole premise rests on caring what outsiders think of The Game. It also requires these outsiders tacit approval for our rivalry to be "great" in order to enjoy it more. Therefore by your way of thinking, when one team is down our game is diminished and your enjoyment is lessened.

My approach makes every Game just as important because my hate for tsun doesn't rest on the whim of outsiders opinions. It is constant, it doesn't waver, it doesn't care if both teams are #1 and #2 or if they are both unranked and its been reduced to a regional game.

I want to see scUM teams beaten, I want to see their fans humiliated and in pain. You want people like Herbstriet, Mark May and Craig James to say its the best rivalry in college football.

Two different objectives lead to two different ideas of what The Game is all about.

If someone is stupid enough to start with Notre Dame V. Any[censored]ingbody...why do I give a [censored] what the next game out of their cockholster is?

I'm not some supposedly unbiased sports writer. I'm an OSU fan. And I want UM to lose every single time they take the field.

I gotta agree here. Anybody that says the Notre Dave vs. USC rivalry trumps OSU vs. Michigan has got to be out of their minds. I thought it was always understood that OSU vs. Michigan WAS the biggest rivalry in college football. I don't care what region you live in, thats the honest truth. There will be people in those regions like Chicago and New York where theres a lot of fans, and they may root for their team, but to believe their rivalry trumps the greatest...should be blasphemy :)

#1 is Michigan..period..no one else is close.

I want Michigan to fail and fail hard...Appalachian State=Epic, Toledo=Glorious. I don't want to see them win another game in the series for the rest of my lifetime. [censored] that whole "most competitive rivalry in sports" nonsense. I don't want to lose to Michigan just so some dork sports analyst can talk up how great the rivalry is. I want them to be like "Yeah this was once the closest rivalry in sports and then Ohio State beat those dick wads year after year until they finally decided to just quit football because it was too hard to take." I want to sit and watch the game with my grandchildren and if Jim Tressel's name comes up I want them to curiously ask me how he was able to keep his job for as long as he did with such a poor record against that [Mark May]hole up north

You're obviously going soft. I don't want them to win another game period not only for my lifetime, but my children's lifetime. And if I had grandchildren, I wouldn't want tsun to win another game for their lifetimes either. But the quitting football part, definitely.

I'm perfectly fine with Minnesota or Michigan State or somebody else (not Wisconsin) assuming the mantle of antagonist for the next 100 years or whatever -- maybe those teams can earn back their badges of eliteness from their glory years in the 40s/50s/60s. Sure I wish it would have happened to another top team, but [Mark May] happens. James Madison clipped Va Tech last year. Just have to tip your cap off to those guys. Plus Toledo is in Ohio.
