Just curious--why the dislike of UC? What with their many immature attempts to antagonize OSU and its fans, I'd think scUM fans would like them.

Why anyone would like the naked kitties is beyond me. Those fucking juggalos can drown in the Ohio and the world would be a MUCH better place.

Pretend for a second that you're a sports writer/fan in Chicago/New York/Philly/Boston/Baltimore and you're asked to list the biggest rivalry games in college football -- being from those areas you begin with Notre Dame - USC and then to Notre Dame and whoever they're playing, then where do you go?

You go to Ohio State and Michigan - you go there because unlike Purdue - Indiana, Texas - Texas A&M, Alabama - Auburn, USC - UCLA, Cal - Stanford, it matters. You go there because unlike Texas - Texas A&M, or Alabama - Auburn, it's an amazingly even series, because BOTH schools have impressive histories - not just once every four years - because so much rests on the outcome.

Name another rivalry where so many awards, bids, championships ride on the outcome -- that's why you count down to Michigan week, that's why you laugh when they stumble bum to Appy State, just as the folks in Ann Arbor were hoping Navy or Marshall could pull the upset in the 'shoe.
Agreed.

Your whole premise rests on caring what outsiders think of The Game. It also requires these outsiders tacit approval for our rivalry to be "great" in order to enjoy it more. Therefore by your way of thinking, when one team is down our game is diminished and your enjoyment is lessened.

My approach makes every Game just as important because my hate for tsun doesn't rest on the whim of outsiders opinions. It is constant, it doesn't waver, it doesn't care if both teams are #1 and #2 or if they are both unranked and its been reduced to a regional game.

I want to see scUM teams beaten, I want to see their fans humiliated and in pain. You want people like Herbstriet, Mark May and Craig James to say its the best rivalry in college football.

Two different objectives lead to two different ideas of what The Game is all about.
Ah, but I'm willing to bet you really DO care what others think, whether you admit it or not. tOSU fans want - and appreciate - the recognition that the big name tOSU/TSUN rivalry brings nationally - and you should! Hey, Wyoming fans might have some thought that their game against Montana is a huge rivalry - but if they try to make that case to anyone outside of Wyoming or Montana fans, they'll get nothing but laughs and snickers.

I gotta agree here. Anybody that says the Notre Dave vs. USC rivalry trumps OSU vs. Michigan has got to be out of their minds. I thought it was always understood that OSU vs. Michigan WAS the biggest rivalry in college football. I don't care what region you live in, thats the honest truth. There will be people in those regions like Chicago and New York where theres a lot of fans, and they may root for their team, but to believe their rivalry trumps the greatest...should be blasphemy :)
Exactly! To be the greatest (as the first message I quoted here said) the game must be among two greats, who are playing for something significant most of the time.

Nature has created a balance.

My job as an Ohio State fan is not to wish them well or hope they win all of their games so that when the Buckeyes beat them it will somehow be worth more. My job is to wish that they find nothing but failure and disappointment not just on that one Saturday in November, but at every other possible opportunity along the way.

M*ch*g*n's job as the arch nemesis is to somehow manage to be at least halfway decent and succeed in spite of my wishes.

Did Superman ever think to himself, "I hope Lex Luthor is at least marginally competent so people will still think I'm awesome when I stop him?" NO.

If M*ch*g*n fails to maintain the balance by not holding up their end of the deal, it's not my problem.
Best post of the entire thread! During the heyday of the Nebraska-Oklahoma rivalry (which Tex-ass and the Big 12 destroyed) I hated Oklahoma with a vengeance. But why was it a huge, nationally recognized and respected rivalry? Because essentially EVERY year it was played for the conference championship and resulting bowl invite, and quite often had national championship implications. But that didn't mean I had to want the land-thieves to win the rest of their games. That was THEIR responsibility, mine was to despise them! VERY well put, jlb!

False.

I care about scUM fans, players and coaches suffering humiliating defeat.

OSU's national reputation is in their own hands, we don't need a good scUM team to make that happen. The Montana/Wyoming analogy misses by a mile.

I went to a bearcat football game a few years back with a few friends. I wasn't too fond of some of the fans there. Some of them think they should be in the big ten and would do well there.......

Alabama and Auburn is another one that several fans think is the best. They have to share a state. The same with Duke/UNC. I can't imagine that.

Good one. I mean, look at the 'Bama fan that killed the trees on Auburn's campus. That dude just made the top 10 hated men in the SEC list.

I grew up there and most of my HS friends went there (UC). They didn't say shit about the football program until just recently.

tOSU-Oregon game all I heard was how awful tOSU is and JT is a this and a that. I had a 50-something old woman tell me I am an asshole for wearing a Buckeyes Jersey in BW-3 for that game. She had on a "Buckeye State" shirt and then proceeded to tell me she was actually an Indiana Catholic School fan. WTF!!!

Basketball was obviously a different story all together. The Cincinnati-Xavier rivalry is a good one for the city but doesn't mean shit outside of the Greater Cincinnati area.

False, double stamped.,

OSU's greatness does not hinge on UM, but The Game's does.

It has been five years since OSU was UM's most humiliating or painful loss. It wasn't even close either.

It is not The Game because some UM coach managed to stop losing to Woody, but because UM hired Woody's disciple to upset Woody's greatest team and arguably the best in school history.

it isn't The Game because UM had some upsets in the 90s, but because they derailed so many undefeated title runs

it isn't The Game because an OSU coach rallied in the 00s, but because JT called his shot then shocked the world by walking into their stadium without his QB and leaving with a win and a foundation for the 02 class and a decade of dominance.

Is it still The Game? Yes.

Is it the biggest rivalry in sports if Woody Bo had never taken place, and instead was an era on par with Tressel Rodriguez? No.

Yep, exactly.

Jaxbuck, read this post carefully along with the one from jlb1705 that I quoted. Yes, you hate them with a purple passion - no one is arguing that you shouldn't. But should they slide into perpetual mediocrity at this point, The Game will no longer have the greatness, the prestige or the importance that it has had over the decades. You want them to lose every game and suffer humiliation - that's fine. As jlb stated so well, that's YOUR right - their right, even duty, is to strive to be a good enough team such that The Game continues to have relevance because something's on the line.

I can read just fine thank you.

You guys who want scUM to be good again are forgetting The Game as we knew it is already over. The two teams are in separate divisions, if scUM is good again you are looking at the chance of a rematch a week later. The B1G brass, with no fight from our AD, turned it into just another hate game already. The ship has sailed.

The thing that I keep reading is something major has to be on the line so our friends in the sports writing world will think kindly of our rivalry. The finality of The Game, everything on the line, do or die....that's all gone. Somebody can still play spoiler but the days of winner take all, defacto B10 championship game are done. That game will be held a week later.

The B1G CCG might get some more pub because of the rematch angle but if your enjoyment of The Game rests on whats at stake then you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Think back to 2006. Whats the bigger deal, The Game or the rematch the following week?

I don't care what the national media thinks of The Game. I care about what it means to me and the only thing that matters to me is a win. Quality of tsun is immaterial. Their fans are still the same arrogant bastards no matter how bad the team is. Shoving more humble pie down their cockholsters is always a good thing.
