Preseason and Regular Season Polls (2015)

I frankly would not look forward to playing an Alabama team motivated by revenge in the first round, all things being equal. And while all teams involved in the playoff picture at this juncture have top talent at the skill positions, i think Bama is the only team who can match our on-field talent across the board. Of the 3 teams currently in the committee's top 4, i'd want to play ND, Clemson and then Bama, in that order.

eh

I wouldn't want to see Henry 30 times but Bama has weaknesses just like anyone else and OSU is uniquely capable of exposing theirs.

They can't manball you to death if the OSU offense goes for 400+ yards and 35+ points (and it can).

A motivated Bama does cause me concern but they don't scare me like last year's version. Alabama last year was significantly more balanced on offense and nearly as good on defense. I'm still not convinced their secondary issues have been fixed but the SEC has absolutely awful QB play this year.

So, Ohio State beats a 5-5 Illinois on the road by 25 while Clemson beats a 3-7 Syracuse on the road by 10, and we flip places in the coaches poll. Yeah, that makes sense.

Since we have 4 more #1 votes than Clemson, I think some coaches are seriously voting us low, like outside the top 5.
Other wacky shit like Okie State rising in the rankings despite almost losing to unranked Iowa State.

Assuming you get 25 points for first and place, deceasing a point per position down to 1 point for 25th, we can get an idea of what going on. We have 32 first place votes of the 64 available, which means we have 32 votes of second place or lower. If everyone who didn't vote us #1 instead voted us #2 (highest point scenario), we'd have 1568 points:

32 * 25 = 800
32 * 24 = 768

However, we have only 1541 points which is 27 points below that. Let's assume that the four voters that put Alabama #1, also had Clemson #2 and us #3. That would mean:

32 * 25 = 800
28 * 24 = 672
4 * 23 = 92

Which is 1564 points, which is still 23 points above the 1541 we received. This means that either 23 coaches are voting us #4 or worse (which I highly doubt), or some butt-hurt coaches are voting us around the #7 to #10 range.

THIS.

I'm going to call my shot here and say that things come full circle and that OSU repeats by beating Clemson 31-27 with a late Braxton Miller TD pass (his first throw of the season) to Michael Thomas providing the final margin.

I think that they're substantially better on defense this year. Unless the Buckeye OL gets back to late 2014 form, I don't want to see the Alabama DL at all. As we've seen in the past, you can have all the skill in the world, but if the OL gets trucked it isn't going to do much good.

And Art.

The coaches poll needs to just go away. I like the AP because it provides a nice historical context for ranking and bragging points, particularly since we're on top by just about every metric after this season. Coaches is just useless, but since it's espn affiliated, I don't think it's going anywhere.

It's nice that they made it transparent for the final, but it'd be even nicer if it was transparent all year long. Then it'd probably go away.. as coaches don't want upcoming opponents to see how they got ranked and use it as motivation, talking points, etc.
You'd also get a lot more questions about voting on a weekly basis and coaches admitting they haven't watched any games (we already know this of course)

Sure but this time last year we were terrified of Michigan State because our OL got abused by Penn State a couple of weeks before. Hell the OL was still pretty inconsistent up until the B1G Championship. I'm just not buying into the SEC hype this year. That conference has the worst QB play out of all of the P5 conferences and it isn't even close. Alabama has played against two good QBs all year and got lit up by both.

If Ohio State should be afraid of Alabama's defense, then Alabama should be afraid of Ohio State's defense.

Everybody should be afraid of OSU's defense IMO, and Alabama's offense is no juggernaut anyway, but I'd still rather see an opponent in a national semifinal that doesn't have a loaded DL, Meyer-level recruiting (on paper at least) and a presumed desire for revenge. I think that OSU matches up better with other contenders. Of course, if the OSU OL gets to end of 2014 level performance, it won't matter, but we're far enough along in the season that I want some EVIDENTS beyond mere hope that that will happen.

One of those cases where both defenses are very good. I think both of our defenses are playing at or close to their potential. Could be the top defenses in the playoffs, even though both play against mediocre offenses in their conference. SEC and B1G are both defensive leagues.
Both offenses CAN be very good, but most of the time both are mediocre. I think the difference is ours has a higher ceiling, we just haven't seen it much this year.
In special teams, both are disciplined. Both are begging the opponents to attempt a return on kickoffs. Both play with mean intent on coverage. Both have FG kickers we can't trust.
