Post-Game Post Mortem - Penn State

Some players are very consistent, if rarely spectacular (Craig Krenzel); and some players are sometimes spectacular, but very inconsistent (Troy Smith).

Some players are not a good fit for the scheme.<!-- / message -->
LJB....excellent points and I could not have said them any clearer.

TS had 2 huge turnovers today, that hurt badly.
WTF is wrong with OSU developing QB's. We have 2 elite 11 QB, and another one on the bench. Yet our QB play is terrible.

The frustration with this offense is boiling over.

My questions...

1 - How many times does TS get to drop the snap from the shotgun position?

2 - Is Ted Ginn playing "scared"?

3 - Why didn't Gonzo see the ball at all tonight?

4 - Are TS and TGII "trying to do too much"? Are they trying the score a TD everytime they touch the ball?

5 - Why did we look so good running the ball on the last drive of the first half, and so inconsistent for the rest of the game?

6 - Malcolm Jenkins was clearly picked on in the first half - what were the adjustments (positive) in the second half to compensate?

7 - Was it playcalling or execution?

Ginn used to just take off without trying to cut and gash. Now hes going east-west instead of north-south. I can't for the life of me understand whats wrong with him.

Ginn has run routes this season primarily to the sideline instead of across the middle (where he could potentially get hurt). Ginn is slowed down by going out and coming back for the ball. He is then flatfooted when people tackle him.

Maybe if the quarterback could hit him across the middle of the field, we would see better things from Ginn.

Have to call you on this one.

Hamby's bad moment this year was the dropped TD pass from Zwick in the Texas game. I don't fault him for letting PSU's best defensive lineman school him to sack Smith. He's a receiving TE who has learned to block, not the other way around. RBs and TEs are going to be owned by linemen sometimes, that's just life.

I'd just hate to see Ryan's otherwise solid career as a Buckeye get tarnished because of one missed ball against Texas. A critical ball, no doubt, but one play.

He was by no means (imo) a primary cause for tonight's loss. Considering a complicating factor he's quietly dealing with this year, and plays he's made over the years, I'm not comfortable with 'stinks' personally.
I just think Hamby's mistakes have proven extremely costly in the climax of these big games. Dropping passes, missing blocks, woe-is-me attitude because of previous failures. I feel for the guy but he is certainly making it difficult to win 'em...(mind you im not blaming him...he is just one piece of the puzzle).

I hope you didnt put alot of thought into that comment...

If he cant do it on the field that why would he even get a paycheck???

What else is the explaination for it? that he is suddenly afraid of contact? Last year he caught the ball and took off... we all saw the results of that... this year, it seems completely different, he catches the ball, dances around and jumps out of bounds.

Sure it could just be the focus of the defense/special teams... but it seems like more than that

i haven't even watched the game yet. I got off work, came home, and walked in the door. I had forgot to turn the t.v. off and heard "FINAL SCORE, PENN ST. 17, OSU 10. Ugh. Like being punched in the stomach. But I will say this, at least we have scUM to play yet. I remember when coop was coach, I always said that I would trade all the wins every year just to beat those bastards. I really believe that. I wanted tOSU to beat psu as bad as anyone here. But THE GAME is what i am focused on now.
GO BUCKS

I was talking about on kick returns of all kinds. He dances way too much. I think his route running has actually improved a great deal.

Does TS have pocket prescence? Can the guy tell when a blitz is coming. I swear he is the only guy in the country that doesn't see it coming and audible. Can someone explain to Teddy Ginn the idfference between the sideline and the goal line. I think he thinks you get yards going laterally and point running out of bounds. Does anyone else think we have unintelligent players. We have great athletes on offense who just don't seem to get it. The best defense in the nation is being wasted by the 80th best offense. Frustrating to watch.

Can't agree more with the Troy Smith evaluation. GREAT athlete. Not a great quarterback. Not saying Zwick is great, but, after watching tonight, I can't help but think he's a better fit right now. Other than the option plays, he probably runs each play better than Smith. I can't count the times that Troy stopped reading his receivers WAY to early. It's nice to have his athleticism when the pocket breaks down, but if he can't read the D on every other play (when the line holds) AND make good decisions about who to throw to and at the right time, the athleticism isn't worth it. I'll take a few more sacks a game if I can trade it for 10-12 more completions.

Horrible, horrible offensive game. We finally get a solid, talented group of guys, and the offensive coaches can't figure out how to get them the ball. Well, here's one way- don't let Troy Smith get it first. How many times is Tressel going to let Smith fumble, overthrow open receivers, or pull down early & run before he figures out that the kid isn't smart or mature enough to handle it. Zwick gets shit for being a "big, slow white guy" who can't scramble, but I'll take his accuracy and growing maturity any day of the week over Smith's costly haphazard play.

It comes down to this:

Against lesser teams, you can win with just an athlete at quarterback.

But against better teams, you need someone that can read the field, and make good decisions, you need something more than an athlete.

Ours is a great team. Just not a NC team.

Lost to texas, who I think will ultimately win the NC.

Lost to PSU who looked tonight like maybe the only team in the country that could beat Texas.

I live with "Scarlet Colored Glasses" on my face and am the biggest homer in the world, but I'm not dumb enough to think that ours is a crew with wasted talent, poor coaching, poor play calling, or any other excuse you want to use.

We got beat by a better football team tonight, plain and simple. When push came to shove in the 2nd half, our "D" rose to the occasion and yielded only a FG. Their "D" yielded nothing. Congrats to Jo-PA and PSU. YOU are indeed back in a big way.

This comment isn't specific to you, DE, but I heard the very similar comments after the Texas game ... about Justin Zwick!
