Post-Game Post Mortem - Penn State

1) Do you still think that Troy Smith is clearly the best QB and the man to lead this team?
- No, and I never, ever did. He is not a QB. Belisarri version 2.0

2) Do you still think that Antonio Pittman is a great running back?
- He's a good back. No more, no less. Better than Ross, but no Eddie George.

3) Do you still think that the Buckeyes have the best group of wide receivers in college football?
- If not the best, then one of the top 5 groups out of over 100 D-1A teams. Unfortunately, there's no real QB on the field with them to get them the ball.

4) Do you still think that this team has more talent than the 2002 squad (which was ranked the #16 team of all time by Billingsley's)?\
- Too early to tell, but there's a whole lot of talent on this team. The only definite advantage I see for 2002 is that incredible D-line.

5) Do you still think that this is a national championship caliber team?
- Obviously not.

I guess I just don't see the comparison to the 2002 team...where is this team better? LBs, yes. Anywhere else? The D line was better then, I think the O-line was better then, Jenkins and Holmes are probably a wash, and I guess one could say we have more depth at receiver now, CK managed a game a lot better, Pittman might be better, but not much, TE was better then, FB was better then, the secondary? I don't know if this one could be said to be better, probably about the same. And though I have no complaints about the ST, the kickers were magical that year (no blame for Huston, but I think Nuge makes every kick he's attempted, and the punting was at least as good then too).

We have a lot of talent right now, no doubt, but I would have to go, hands down, with the 2002 team on talent and anything else.

Best Recievers- Could, but they aren't because the playcalling will never allow it. We just don't go pass happy.

Pittman- Good servicable running back, not great.

Better than 2002-Its close in talent, but the 2002 squad refused to lose and was just able to find ways to win.

Troy- He's not the QB I thought he'd be this year.

National Caliber team- Yes, we have the defense to win it all if we were to face USC or Texas again (obviously won't happen) if our offense was just decent we'd beat anyone. However, the field position/defensive approach AKA tressel ball takes a special group to win that way.

But then again, four rings in four years is on par with what I "expect".
Not saying I actually think that is reasonable, just anything less and people seem to wonder what is wrong with the bucks.

At least our players can count. (mike hart)

In an age of increasing parity, even the best teams need a lot of luck to win a national championship. In 2002, we had talent and we had luck.

This year we have problems on offense that require immediate attention and those problems are not purely because players aren't executing.

We have a one of the best teams and head coaches in America. I keep remembering just one thing on days like today.

Not that long ago, we expected to lose every big game.

100% right. LB is the only position where the talent is definitely better-and Hawk, Wilhelm, Grant were not exactly chopped liver. NC's need karma, not just talent. Tressel needs to figure out how to stir some up for next year-starting w/ the QBs and OL.

Alright everyone, I'm saying this here because I think everyone is going to read this thread. There is one reason I joined this sight and post exclusively here: because this is hands down the best Buckeye site out there, full of intelligent posters that love Buckeye football and that (for the most part) stay positive about what's going on with the team. A lot of threads have been popping up tonight about various aspects of this loss, and this season. I think we should try to limit the discussions to as few threads as possible. One has to go no further than any given scUM sight to see an example of whiney, complaining fans. WE LOST A TOUGH GAME. IT SUCKS. However, we have nothing to be ashamed of in our two losses. Texas is the best team in the country right now...not USC. We lost to a very good Penn St. team that is for real. We are in no position to second guess a coach that won us our first NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP since the great Woody Hayes, or these players that play their hearts out for this great university each week. I don't blame anyone for constructive criticism, but there is a lot of complaining going on that should not be happening. Again...Penn St. is a very good team. Soon to be a Top 10 team. Lets all move forward and look ahead to the rest of the season, because it is not over. We are still, IMO, one of the top 10 teams in the country that can hang with, and beat antone out there. Need proof? Go watch Texas DESTROY everyone they play... and then re-watch their game against THE OHIO STATE BUCKEYES. 10-2 will be nothing to be disapointed with.:osu:

I love this coaching staff; upstanding, moralistic people. Fair, respectable.

But when's the axe coming down on Bollman? The o-line is a big, big problem. I honestly couldn't tell you if it was their technique or they were just getting outplayed, but the uglies up front were getting manhandled by Penn's DLine. And how about we hire an offensive coordinator? If we're running the spread now, how about we get an offensive coach who knows how to run the spread?

The bottom line is this: we know its not the talent that's keeping us to 10 points a game. It's the coaching.

Watch out, posting anything other than flowery prose about the Bucks can get you labeled as a basher.

Seriously though I could not agree more with your post. The offensive problems start with the front four.

Who knows, give Boeckman a try.

2) Do you still think that Antonio Pittman is a great running back?
Good back.

3) Do you still think that the Buckeyes have the best group of wide receivers in college football?
Never thought that they did. Two names, Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett. Enough said. Perhaps I'd put them in the top five. Gonzo is good but not special. Ginn is not playing well. And Holmes is not lighting the world on fire...

4) Do you still think that this team has more talent than the 2002 squad (which was ranked the #16 team of all time by Billingsley's)?\
uh...hell no.

5) Do you still think that this is a national championship caliber team?
see above.
