Pitt 13, West Virginia 9 (final)

Mel Kiper Jr. just made a good point, that it's very hard to beat a team that has 12 men on the field, a reference to the refs making some ridiculous calls in WVU's favor. With everything on the line and with the refs doing everything they can to help you win, and you still lay a big turd, how in the world can you argue that this is still a titanic upset and not just you getting exposed as being very very average?

To be honest, I don't think WVU is an average team. I think they were a legit, very good team that simply could not handle the bright lights of the big stage. They spit the bit. Missouri was beaten by a better team tonight. WVU just plain choked.

I can understand how a QB chokes in a big game by making some uncharacteristic decisions, or a defense having a tough day against a particular player. But Slaton, nine rushes for 11 yards? Devine Noel, seven rushes for 11 yards? Even Pat White was running at a clip of 3.5 a carry, and we are talking about a team that lives and dies by running the football.

And I would buy the chocking theory if they had beat some real teams, but the fact of the matter is, this is a team that has lost in consecutive years to South Florida in pretty much the same fashion and a team whose only impressive victory was three years ago against the tenth ranked Georgia Bulldogs.. Here's the breakdown of the last four seasons of medicrity:

2004:
Losses to VaTech, FSU, Pitt and BC. Most impressive win of the year: at home against Maryland by three.

2005: Opener, beats Syracuse 15-7. Gets blown out 34-17 by VaTech. Cruises past an easy Big Least schedule and finishes with a victory over UGA.

2006: Beats the #14th ranked Rutgers by 2 at home, and loses the other two remotely interesting games of the regular season to UL and South Florida. Beats unranked Georgia Tech in bowl by 3.

2007: Prides on beating teams like Cincy and Rutgers (imagine Ohio State saying, oh yeah we deserve respect cuz we beat Cincy) and losing in ugly fashion to South Florida and Pitt.

This is clearly the most overrated team in the past four years.

clearly?

I think there are a couple Ntre Ame teams that were blown up in bowl games that would beg to differ....

Thanks for putting in the uncomfortable spot of defending ND . But yeah, here it goes:

In 2004, ND defeated Michigan, MSU, Washington and #11 Tennessee. I doubt that WVU could have won any of those games that year.

In 2005, ND beat Michigan, blew Washington out on the road, scored a moral victory over SC, and beat Tenn.

In 2006, they beat a ranked PSU team.

So at least they got the chance to be embarrassed by playing good opponents. On the other hand, WVU don't play anyone, and when they do, they usually gets beat. If you think the Pitt game was ugly, put them in ND's shoes against Jamarcus Russell and LSU or AJ Hawk and Ohio State. That would truly be ugly.

I don't doubt it for a minute. Michigan had issues with teams that played decent defense and could spread the ball around. Michigan State was then developing their own schizophrenia about winning and Washington was on it's way to bottoming out as a program. Tennessee, yeah they probably lose that one. But I wasn't talking about 2004 Ntre Ame. 3-1 WVU.

In 2005, ND beat Michigan, blew Washington out on the road, scored a moral victory over SC, and beat Tenn.

Michigan had 5 losses, Washington lost 10 games and while USC would've destroyed WVU, that was the worst Tennessee team in a decade. 3-1 there.

In 2006, they beat a ranked PSU team.

So at least they got the chance to be embarrassed by playing good opponents. On the other hand, WVU don't play anyone, and when they do, they usually gets beat. Maybe, maybe not. It doesn't matter too much because it didn't get played, but Ntre Ame was EASILY more consistently over-rated because they are Ntre Ame and people have doubted WVU forever.

Also Ntre Ame would have lost to WVU in each of the past 3 years. Ntre Ame can't stop the run to save their life.

Hats off to PITT!
I'm surprised Mr.Moustaches crutches did not splinter the way he was tossing them around! That was a little funny, but I can understand his frustration there!
My bosses daughter goes to Pitt & never thought they could pull this one off! I had to admit it would be a big one to do! But with the way college football went this year nothing is out of reach! I told them never throw your team under a bus esp. this year anything is possible.
My boss had called me & it was right before Pitt got the 1st touchdown(only) & I told her they were ready to get 6 & she was flying to the house in shock to watch the game. She was shopping at Wal Mart & never thought the game would be in Pitts favor,I said "surprise"! Even with the questionable holding calls. The 2 on Pitt & one should have been called on WVU,hey Pitt won either way! CONGRATS!
Pitt had NOTHING to lose, other than Yes expose WVU & that they did. I have never seen them play this hard,I was amazed.
The news here in Pittsburgh was crazy, that was the first thing they showed downtown Oakland it was going crazy with Pitt fans!
Again Congratulations to Pitt,we loved it!

The Big East needs to open a formal investigation of the referees in this game. It was a shocking attempt to put a Big East team in the National Championship game. Well done to Pitt on an excellent victory in such circumstances.

This post has been flagged for holding. 10 yards from the spot of the post. It remains 3rd down

I'm hearing a lot of people in the media shocked by the results of this game. Pat Forde is even saying this might be a bigger upset than App. State Michigan, given what's at stake here. Using the exact same logic, it's easy to see why this game isn't really that big of an upset. The numbers speak for themselves. Steve Slaton, 9 rushes for 11 yards. WV overall, 12 1st downs for 182 yards the entire game. 3 lost fumbles. I'm sorry but if you put up these kinds of numbers with everything on the line, it's not an upset, it's called getting your ass kicked and getting exposed. Slaton's a nice player, but come on, OSU never even give him a look. And if you put a RB or WR at the QB position, I'm sure he will get just as many yards rushing as Pat White does. And what's up with leaving the game with a jammed finger, and having to be hand held off the field like a freakin four year old? WVU is and has always been a huge fraud and they were clearly outclassed by, out of all teams, Pitt....

Its not Slatons fault that our OLine got ate like a bunch of chumps....our guys had ZERO space to run.....and, so what your saying is that since Slaton never got a look at OSU, he must be a nobody....

also, I dont know if you guys ever notice, but Rich rod is the most stubborn SOB when it comes to play calling. Pitt put 9 guys in the box all night long, yet, we never threw slants, hardly any bubble screens that we like to run, hardly anything down field. Pitt basically didnt have a safety because he was up in the box. This is the 3rd game in recent memory where Rich has screwed the pootch on play calling. 04 VT, where we were like 0-13 on 3rd downs....We could have easily won the game had Rich not been so stubborn....last years USF game, and now this game. I feel bad for our players more than anything.....
