To be honest, I don't think WVU is an average team. I think they were a legit, very good team that simply could not handle the bright lights of the big stage. They spit the bit. Missouri was beaten by a better team tonight. WVU just plain choked.
I can understand how a QB chokes in a big game by making some uncharacteristic decisions, or a defense having a tough day against a particular player. But Slaton, nine rushes for 11 yards? Devine Noel, seven rushes for 11 yards? Even Pat White was running at a clip of 3.5 a carry, and we are talking about a team that lives and dies by running the football.
And I would buy the chocking theory if they had beat some real teams, but the fact of the matter is, this is a team that has lost in consecutive years to South Florida in pretty much the same fashion and a team whose
only impressive victory was three years ago against the tenth ranked Georgia Bulldogs.. Here's the breakdown of the last four seasons of medicrity:
2004:
Losses to VaTech, FSU, Pitt and BC. Most impressive win of the year: at home against Maryland by three.
2005: Opener, beats Syracuse 15-7. Gets blown out 34-17 by VaTech. Cruises past an easy Big Least schedule and finishes with a victory over UGA.
2006: Beats the #14th ranked Rutgers by 2 at home, and loses the other two remotely interesting games of the regular season to UL and
South Florida. Beats unranked Georgia Tech in bowl by 3.
2007: Prides on beating teams like Cincy and Rutgers (imagine Ohio State saying, oh yeah we deserve respect cuz we beat Cincy) and losing in ugly fashion to
South Florida and Pitt.
This is clearly the most overrated team in the past four years.
