PG P.J. Hill (BK JEKABPILS- Latvia)

I think PJ is getting with the program in a big way on both sides of the ball. While I do think that he expends to much energy in his movement and could try to save his energy and stamina some I think he is learning just how to do that and play well within the rythym of the game.

The lowdown on P.J.'s duds

You had an inkling P.J. Hill was a different dude when we first got a look at his dreadlocks. He added another touch of style recently with a pair calf-high socks with two red stripes on top. Straight out of the ?60s.
?I like those socks,? he said. ?That?s a little ?old school? in me.?
Hill said he bought a pack of them at Journeys, a shoe and apparel store in Polaris Fashion Place mall. ?Got all different colors,? he said.
That isn?t Hill?s only departure from the established Buckeye fashion norm. A reader e-mailed us last week wanting to know why, when the team comes on the court a second time during pregame warmups, Hill is the only one still wearing a white warmup jacket. The rest of his teammates have switched to pullovers of a different color.
?Let me tell you why,? Hill said.
?They gave me a shirt that?s too long and so I can?t shoot because the (sleeve) goes over my hand. The white coat is the only thing that fits me, so I have to wear that. The other stuff?s too big.?
He said he?s taken to wearing the coat for another reason.
?It keeps me warm.?

As the saying goess: 2 steps forward and one step back. Matta has been trying to get the bench more minutes but they just don't produce. Hill was out of control on 3-4 possessions in a row in the 2nd half, taking it into the trees with no place to go. His dreads and head are going all over the place but it doesn't seem like he goes anywhere. If the offense isn't going through Butler, there isn't any movement, no flow, no continuity. I know the young guys are only freshmen and they are learning on the fly but it's painful to watch the last 10 minutes of a Buckeye game when Thad pulls the starters with a 12 point lead and has to put them in 2 minutes later b/c it's down to 6. That game had no business being close tonight. This team is missing the killer instinct and they better find it in the next few games b/c it doesn't get any easier with 8 more games w/ Mich St., IU, Wiscy, Purdue and Minnesota. I thought they would be a lock for the tourney a few weeks ago w/ their strength of schedule alone, but if you can't beat a top 25 team, you don't deserve to be one of the 65 invited. Their still missing that staple victory.

I thought that PJ really stepped up last night when Butler went down with his injury...

I am sure Matta felt a little uneasy about having to go with Hill, but he didn't turn the ball over, got us into our offense, played good defense, and had the nice little drive to the hoop to score...

If PJ puts in the work over the summer he is going to be a good combo to Crater for the team next year...

I think he could be a good role player. I've heard opinions that he
doesn't have much offense in his game, but of the few shots I've seen him take this year, they haven't been bad. His shot looks decent; he just hasn't looked for it. He'll have a much different role next year and hopefully he'll step into it. I don't think he'll be amazing, but you always need role players that can come in and spark the D and not turn the ball over!

I like this kid. And he has cool hair!

Yes, PJ had a good game.....we need more of this. He really has struggled through most of the season. Overall, I don't see him being a major player next year....probably more playing time to start off with owing Crater taking a bit of time getting accustomed to playing on Thad Matta's team. But I see him spending more time on the bench towards the middle and end of next season.

I tend to agree with you unless he dramatically improves his outside shooting and free-throw shooting. I think we were all spoiled by Jamar:biggrin2: this year and we shall see that next year. Hopefully, Crater will be able to step it up as a freshman.

Not really sure that PJ struggled through most of the season, when on the court I thought that PJ gave solid minutes, but Matta didn't give him many minutes, and Matta said at one point, it was just because he has been to battle with Butler and it worried him not having Butler out there...

Hill has showed the quickness to be able to play at this level...He showed the ability to get to the hole last night...We really don't have a big sample size with PJ not getting a lot of minutes, but what he showed last night when he was forced into play that while he wasn't scoring like Jamar, it wasn't like we went in the tank with him in there...We held the game where it was...

With Turner showing more ability to handle some point duties, along with Hill and Crater I am not so worried about the point next year...

Hill climbs toward top of recruiting list

By Jim Fuller, Register Staff

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ? Somewhere on Tayler Hill?s to-do list is a little reminder from a Hall of Famer.

With a bit of a sheepish grin, Hill, the highly touted guard from South High in Minneapolis, Minn., vows that the call to UConn women?s basketball coach Geno Auriemma will be coming in the near future.

However, with the task of trying out for the U.S. Under-18 national team this week and preparing for the upcoming season with the Minnesota NC Heat AAU squad, Hill?s life has been a bit of a whirlwind the last couple of weeks.

?I talked to one of their assistant coaches a couple of weeks ago, and I am supposed to contact Geno coming up soon after the camp,? Hill said. ?We?ll see how that goes. I am keeping my options open, but they are definitely in there. Geno is a great coach and, obviously, they have a great support staff over there. He is developing the players, so I think they are a great program.?
