PG Amos "AJ" Harris (transfer to New Mexico State)

Your post is exactly why I put in the disclosure "Not even remotely suggesting his success has to do with the matchups". I don't care if AJ is playing against girls, if he can hit open jumpers, he can hit open jumpers.

You seem to have a good handle on how AJ is performing during AAU season, so I am asking if he's matched up against other top pgs and how it went. Brunson is kind of the measuring stick for PGs in this class and he's been distributing well, but has been struggling big time with his shot. I know that KJSS hasn't played MIF yet and was just curious how he's done against other top PGs and how it might affect the mid summer rankings. AJ's numbers have been very good this AAU season, but no one at the national level is talking about it.

I definitely take a more measured approach on recruits (not just AJ or AG, but all recruits). I think most people are on the side of expecting big things out of recruits and when they don't materialize right away, are looking for reasons/excuses (kid doesn't try, coaches can't coach, etc.). The reality is that college is a huge step up from HS and AAU, especially for kids who aren't elite athletes, are undersized for their position or don't have well rounded games.

If you think I don't like AJ because I wondered if a small PG who shot 30% from three in HS ball can lead a college team to a national title, so be it and I'm not really concerned about it. We've won plenty of B1G titles and I'm not complaining, but I'd like to see a national title and I think we will have a talent level that could bring a championship if we get good PG play and have a legit low post scoring threat. IF AJ is a 40% three point shooter like he's averaged so far in AAU, then I'll be more than satisfied with his development in that area of his game.

i don't really disagree with much from that post, but please understand that it's more about your approach than it is about your content. it appears that you're actively searching for and focusing on the negatives while being doubtful about his future. your approach to harris reminds me of dz's approach to craft before he played a single game at osu.

Just watched some video of the game between Dunbar and Franklin and while Kennard scored 41 points AJ help this team win by scoring 23 points with 9 assists and I would not discount him because of this height. He can finish almost players much taller than himself and is awfully quick.

Outlook for 2015: Harris is a run-the-show point guard who gets the bucket well for a player his size. His speed and ball-handling give him the tools to contribute right away as the point guard, the problem is he's got players in front of him. If the Buckeyes want to get Lyle and Grandstaff on the floor to start games, then Harris will be coming off the bench as the backup to Lyle at point. But don't count out a scenario that has Harris starting at point with Lyle playing off the ball.

I don't know that Harris really has anyone "in front" of him at this point. They just lost their starting backcourt, and Lyle is a combo. I could see Lyle and Kam or Lyle and Grandstaff as the starting backcourt but as the column mentions Harris and Lyle is another possible starting backcourt.

I wouldn't discount the notion of Mickey Mitchell playing point guard. His court vision and passing are incredible, and from what I can see in his highlight film his handle is also pretty good.

Not suggesting he starts ahead of AJ, but as a backup point he might fill the bill (and he probably has the ability to play all five positions in one form or another).

Can he defend the opposing PG?

I'm thinking position on O. Defensive assignments would probably differ.

It's interesting to see how the Spurs use Kawhi Leonard on defense. He has this season defended every opponent position from point to center. Points out that one need not defend the same position one plays (and I don't mean to suggest Mickey will be the caliber player that Leonard is).

Starting lineup is anybodys guess right now. About the only guy I'd say for certain that will start is Tate, probably at the 3. I don't think Matta would want to start the only 2 guys that can play the point unless they are clearly our best 2 guards like this year with SS and DAR. I think Lyle will be our best guard, I think Kam will start beside him. MM has good vision and is a slick passer and handles the ball well for his size, but I don't see him playing any point. From what I saw of him IN HS, he was good in the open floor on the break, but not so much in the half court. I could see either KBD or Loving starting at the 4 and the same with TT or Giddens at the 5.
