Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Look at who they played that year...

washington state and Texas Tech threw the ball a ton

Purdue was still in the basketball on grass phase

that defense was excellent at bending but not breaking. after seeing the rushing totals, the yards other teams were gaining was almost exclusively through the air.

True, and I agree. It would be interesting to see what the Buckeyes gave up on average against the non Air Raid teams that year, just to see what the impact was by those few teams. I would look it up, but I'm lazy, its late, and I'm going to bed. I'll check it out tomorrow if I can find the stats.

Yep. That team gave me three heart attacks and one minor stroke. But, man...when it was crunch time, those guys got it done every time. A total team. Can't believe it's been ten years...

  4. Cincinnatti: 324 yds (260 yds average)
  5. Indiana: 283 yds (251 yds average)
  6. Northwestern: 283 yds (232 yds average)
  7. San Jose: 265 yds (263 yds average)

Sorry for getting off topic for a second but...

That is CRAZY, given the talent we had in the defensive backfield. Doss, Nickey, Gamble, Fox, Salley, Will Allen. Not to mention the pass rush we had too.

I would have never guessed we were that low in Passing Defense

I was surprised, too, when I looked it up. Here's the 2002 NCAA Passing Defense Rankigs...

Not that difficult to comprehend. Nobody could move the ball on the ground against us. They had to resort to passing, all the time. That dinged us. I am sure that if someone had the time to calculate the number of passing attempts against us, it would be much higher than the national average for 14 games.

Look how often eveyone passed against us. Only Wisconsin focused on the run rather than the pass (they ran 45 times):

TEAM ........ ATT . COM .. YDS
Texas Tech ... 44 .. 26 .. 341
Kent State ... 35 .. 17 .. 187
Wash State ... 45 .. 26 .. 263
Cincinnati ... 52 .. 26 .. 324
Indiana ...... 32 .. 19 .. 283
Northwestern . 45 .. 24 .. 283
San Jose State 49 .. 36 .. 265
Wisconsin .... 19 .. 11 .. 160
Penn State ... 28 .. 14 ... 98
Minnesota .... 20 .. 10 ... 59
Purdue ....... 39 .. 27 .. 285
Illinois ..... 46 .. 27 .. 305
Michigan ..... 48 .. 23 .. 247
Miami ........ 44 .. 29 .. 304
------------------------------
TOTALS ...... 546 . 315 . 3404

Eight teams passed over 40 times, and it would've been nine teams had Purdue thrown one more pass.

Yep. Since they knew they couldn't run on us, they had to air it out in hopes of beating us.

"According to the book, Paterno, who obsessively took and kept handwritten notes, had no notes in his files that mentioned the investigation."

Is there any doubt that those notes were destroyed long before Posnansky was granted access?

Yep, because, for example, if I were cheating on my wife I would totally keep detailed notes on it. It totally seems like the smart thing to.

I really just wish that Paterno had defended himself. You learn a lot about someone by listening to them speak their own words. Whether it was smart or self-serving to keep silent, it took away an opportunity to learn more of what exactly went on.

Maybe Ollie North and Fawn Hall shredded them?

Hackenberg is the next Matt BarkleyReply This kid is good and leading by example already!! Best of luck to him, he'll be playing on Sundays. What these kids that stayed need to know is (and the one that left), is that the nfl isn't concerned with what bowl game you played in, they want game changers.

We'll see if the sentiment is the same after he decommits.

According to the book, the two (Paterno & Sandusky) were never friendly

The funny thing is the Paterno's are too damn stupid to understand that if true it actually casts Evil Gepetto in a worse light.

"No I never really liked that Sandusky fellow but I'll be damned if I was going to let his personal stuff get in the way of my legacy!"
