Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Chris Petersen Not Interested In Penn State Position
Highly sought after Boise State head coach Chris Petersen is reportedly not interested in the vacant Penn State head coaching position, according to The Patriot-News.

Petersen, 47, is considered one of the hottest coaching prospects in college football. In six years as the head coach at Boise State he has led his team to a 71-6 overall record and a 2-0 record in BCS Bowls. He is the first and only two-time winner of the Paul ?Bear? Bryant Award, given to the NCAA?s best college football coach.

Penn State is looking to fill their head coaching position for the first time since 1965 after longtime head coach Joe Paterno was fired due to the Jerry Sandusky sexual assault scandal. Paterno became college football?s all-time winningest coach while at Penn State, posting a record of 409-136-3.

Tom Bradley has served as the interim Nittany Lions head coach since Paterno?s firing.

Compared to @Sekrah, Ben doesn't know crap. Sekrah's predictions on Twitter speak for themselves.
Assuming this has any truth (I'm skeptical), let me toss out something crazy that could involve multiple schools... Urban Meyer going to PSU and tOSU thus getting some other coach from another school (say, for hypothetical sake, Stoops). That would "involve PSU, two other schools, and some power players".

Now, don't get me wrong, I have zero basis for this, I'm just tossing crap against the wall under the theory that maybe Meyer is upset/concerned about the sanctions tOSU has received being worse than he expected.
This exchange rates about a "6" on a "10" scale for the delusion permeating that cult right now.

46 years since this job has come open... Reply
...and people think no one is interested? What if it was a seat on an exchange? Or a key piece of property in a development plan? Or a Palm Beach widow?

Anything that hasn't been available for 46 years is going to garner plenty of attention and only the most ambitious of the ambitious.

Regardless of current events, this fact alone puts Penn State in the drivers seat in this hire.

46 years on a Palm Beach widow, presumably in her 20s when hitched, does not make her attractive compared to other options. To keep the comparison valid the widow in question would also have to have an untreated STD. The combination would considerably lessen the curb appeal.

First Pelini, then Ferentz, and now Meyer. I guess Fitzgerald is next. Penn State fans don't seem to understand that Big 10 schools don't go after coaches at brother institutions. "and some power players..." Swap ADs and presidents too, or does this guy have the Big 10 confused with the NBA?

And you think Penn State isn't going to see the sanctions monster before this thing is through... Head Coach, staff, AD, VP for security, AD bean counter and the president all colluding to keep this story under wraps... I think someone in NCAA land is writing up the rap sheet as we speak.

For fucks sake. Peterson doesn't want to replace JoePa. He want's to start his own cult. Cult leaders have tremendous ego.

Peterson has what he wants... he's now in a BCS conference with a schedule he can handle for the foreseeable future, he can continue to play on a blue field and his program will continue to appeal to a QB who wants to play right now, in an offense geared towards NFL development.

Man buys a waterfront property. Develops it into a beautiful house and owns it for 46 years. On year 46, right before he's getting ready to sell the house, it burns almost all the way to the ground.

The real estate agent selling the house (Penn State alum, of course) says folks should be clamoring to buy this house, despite it being a little crispy around the edges.

You gotta be a special breed of crazy to be a PSU fan.

Champions or co -champions for the same time frame: Ohio State 10, Michigan 5, Wisconsin 5, Penn State 3, Northwestern 3.

i.e. looking at comparisons for the 18 year time frame that Penn State has been in the Big 10 they've established themselves as the third/fourth best team in the conference behind Ohio State and Michigan, possibly Wisconsin.

Let's not forget that the guys from Evanston have as many B1G titles in those years.

Wh?...wait...MORE concerned about handling a 2012 bowl ban than about dog-paddling through the spiritual cesspool PedState has been revealed to be?

I think your "6" rating is beyond generous.

I think Penn State may have to accept an interim coach for the 2012 season (Bradley?) to let the toxic cloud dissipate. This is going to absolutely ruin PSU football for many years IMO.

Giving Bradley a shot at the job might be their best option. No need for the interim tag. Just give him a 3 year deal and if he doesn't work out, try again when this isn't fresh in everyone's mind. Hiring a 2nd/3rd tier guy from inside the program would be way more palatable to their fanbase than hiring a 2nd/3rd tier guy from outside their program. And it would be in line with their incestuous program. So, Bradley is my bet.

I tend to agree with this. There certainly seems to be a fair amount of support for Bradley from within the fan base, and he's the only guy who seems to actually WANT the job.

That being said there is probably a very strong feeling within the BOT that they need to completely clean house. If you keep Bradley you keep most of the same assistant coaches who chattered with Sandusky over coffee every morning when he had a kid in tow over the past twenty years.

I'd probably replace 'best' option with 'only realistic available'.

Not even this guy wants the job:

Well, in this thread:

...they're trying to convince themselves it's Bob Stoops. Better yet, some say he'd only be "okay". Meaning they could do better. They truly are lunatics. I've never seen such an insular fanbase so far out of touch with reality. It is truly amazing.

FWIW, I'd lay my money on Tom Clements, with Bradley as a possibility. Neither are going to blow anybody's hair back, but I can't see them doing any better.

Wait...it gets better:

Initially I shared the opinion that PSU was screwed for many years. After reflection I think that is only true if the university president is sincere in de-emphasizing football. But even if he is, the high rollers will change his mind.

It takes two things to compete at a high level in CFB. Quality players and good coaches. It is competition for quality players that keeps the MAC schools where they are.

As much as we like to talk about magic scarlet jerseys and kids who "want to be Buckeyes" the simple truth is that OSU will always be a dominant program because they virtually own the talent rich state of Ohio when it comes to recruiting. That fact will always attract good coaches.

PSU is in a similar situation. Most kids from PA want to go to PSU. Even if they are down a few years such that kids start to forget their parents will continue to wear the colors and make them fans.

One of the biggest threats to UM football is the resurgence of MSU. In the same vein perhaps the biggest threat to PSU football is the resurgence of Pitt. Chryst has an interesting opportunity in that regard and next years recruiting wars will be interesting to follow.

But at the end of the day PSU is likely to resurface to something like its current level in a few short years. And they will land a quality coach, even if he is an up and comer as opposed to the established names being batted about on their boards.

That said, their current level is not as lofty as many from Pa would like to pretend.
