Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Initially I shared the opinion that PSU was screwed for many years. After reflection I think that is only true if the university president is sincere in de-emphasizing football. But even if he is, the high rollers will change his mind.

It takes two things to compete at a high level in CFB. Quality players and good coaches. It is competition for quality players that keeps the MAC schools where they are.

As much as we like to talk about magic scarlet jerseys and kids who "want to be Buckeyes" the simple truth is that OSU will always be a dominant program because they virtually own the talent rich state of Ohio when it comes to recruiting. That fact will always attract good coaches.

PSU is in a similar situation. Most kids from PA want to go to PSU. Even if they are down a few years such that kids start to forget their parents will continue to wear the colors and make them fans.

One of the biggest threats to UM football is the resurgence of MSU. In the same vein perhaps the biggest threat to PSU football is the resurgence of Pitt. Chryst has an interesting opportunity in that regard and next years recruiting wars will be interesting to follow.

But at the end of the day PSU is likely to resurface to something like its current level in a few short years. And they will land a quality coach, even if he is an up and comer as opposed to the established names being batted about on their boards.

That said, their current level is not as lofty as many from Pa would like to pretend.
I would tend to agree in a general sense, but there's kind of a new precedent here. I cannot think of one program that has dealt with a scandel of this magnitude before. Sure, there have been academic, pay to play, etc type scandels before. But this is kids being sodomized in the program's showers. PSU is going to be known as "Ped State" by outsiders for a long time. That's a mighty big stigma to try to overcome. I suppose it's possible...but, geesh, I wouldn't want to be dealing with that and trying to convince kids to come play there.

I agree. The fact that the events took place in physical facilities that recruits will see makes it difficult to deal with. I just don't think that will have a real affect on kids in two years and not much even a year from now. Parents more so, but HS kids can't relate much to this type of incident.

Didn't take long for the students to get over it.

Their students are myopic and part of the Pedterno cult.

Well, in this thread:

...they're trying to convince themselves it's Bob Stoops. Better yet, some say he'd only be "okay". Meaning they could do better. They truly are lunatics. I've never seen such an insular fanbase so far out of touch with reality. It is truly amazing.

FWIW, I'd lay my money on Tom Clements, with Bradley as a possibility. Neither are going to blow anybody's hair back, but I can't see them doing any better.

Wait...it gets better:

Marty Shottenheimer. :slappy:

If its Ferentz ill gladly cover my face in a plastic bag, tie it, and suffocate myself.

What a funny coincidence. I'm fairly positive that Ferentz, along with several thousand other coaches, would have exactly the same reaction were they to suddenly find themselves coaching PedState.

There are a lot of conversations in NFL circles about Ferentz being a legitimate candidate for the Kansas City Chiefs job. Any lateral move for him would surprise me.

At least they got that right - Iowa and Ped State are about on the same level. In thinking about that however, I think Iowa is a step ahead of Ped State at this point.

Yep

Since they joined the B1G in 1994 (conference play only);

Ped State 90-54
Iowa 76-67-1

Head to head Iowa leads 9-5

.823 wins per year difference and Iowa kicks their ass head to head on a regular basis. Given the disparity in available resources they should be embarrassed by that.....but we all know its just part of the B1G's conspiracy to keep OSU and scUM on top.

And look where Iowa was in the mid-late 90s as well and then look where Ped State was.

The 2000s weren't kind to those inbreds at all.
