Yeah, rah, rah only gets you so far, but watch and tell me what you think. I don't like the WWF like chest thumping, end zone dancing BS that goes on in the NFL, but I expect a senior to act like the game matters. Blase would have been a step up on Saturday night. This kid acted like he was being asked to report to third shift on the assembly line.
ive got nothing wrong with that. as long as you produce.

Two things:

A. We're not going to the BCS Championship game, but before the PSU game, did anyone really think we would or deserved to go?

2. Win out and the Buckeyes are still in a BCS Bowl.

This should be the goal of this team from here out. Get revenge for the Illinois loss of last year and kick the crap out of Michigan. And have fun doing it. Get the Christmas goose ready, I'm looking forward to the Bucks playing in a BCS Bowl game. Anyone care to speculate with whom?

If we play with Pryor, I'd rather have Saine in there.

Wow, I could not disagree more. He's got alot of proving to do before he gets any serious pt. I've yet to see his speed since Washington '07.

Don't let your games come down to a single mistake costing you the game.

Great observation. Yesterday when I was thinking about the game, I kept coming back to this--when you've got a true freshman QB, you're living on the edge if you are banking on your team not making a single mistake.

It's interesting to me how so many people see the game so differently. Unlike LJB, I thought the defense played strongly. I also thought that they did some things that many folks have been calling for (more aggression, some DL line movement) and it was effective.

I also didn't see the game as two horrible offensive teams. This was a game where both teams were relegated to poor field position for most of the game. So, scoring drives usually had to travel 50 yards to get a score. Frequently, drives would go 30 or 40 yards, but no further. To me, that's not anemic offense, but it's a field position game where the offense "wins" by gaining some first downs but ultimately gets shut down by a strong defense. In other games where you have consistently better field position, the scores would be better. And granted, the one time PSU was spotted great field position, they punched it in. I'm w/ LJB that this doesn't make this defense an "all-timer" or great defense, but I'm by no means disappointed with their play. It was inspired, full of movement and activity and shut down a team that hasn't been shut down before.

From our offensive perspective, it seems that many suggest our playcalling is predictable. I go back and look at the first few series, which actually had very little of what I'd call predicable...I mean who on God's green Earth predicted MO Wells to start the game...and a screen. It's not like we run many of those. We also had a short pass to Robo mixed in there and a missed pass to Posey along with a pass to Dane. I think Beans only ran the ball a couple times in there. I'm not saying that's good or bad, but I actually thought we mixed it up a fair bit.

I also saw what everyone else has seen in that Pryor is slow to deliver at times...not surprising for a kid. Take a look at how many sacks The Pickle took last year as a Freshman QB...it happens. Pryor will continue to grow and I think we all believe he will have a bright future. He did have a mistake at a huge point in the ballgame and in my mind, it effectively changed everything. People here have suggested that JT was "willing to sit on a 6-3 lead". I don't know if that's true, but what I DO know is that we were marching down the field, eating clock, and had some control over the game until the fumble. We seemed poised to score based upon our movement. So I don't buy it that JT was content to sit on the lead. We're just trying to get a first down there...and then boom...fumble.

Our offense seems to look good on a short field (go figure...who's offense doesn't :wink2:), but struggles with long drives. My uneducated take on this is that this happens because our line might have a few good series, but it will eventually show it's weakness at some point during a long drive - either through false start mental breakdowns or by whiffing on a block. Our OL, as has been hashed out thoroughly on this board has turned out to be far weaker than the DL. When this season started, I ignorantly thought the OL was a major strength. I now know better as I watch the good defenses just run past our linemen. I'd like to think that next year will be different, but I'm not sure that's really true. Yes, Block O recruits are widely regarded for their talent, but honestly, so are most of our OL recruits. So, maybe the next group WILL live up to the billing, but I'll have to take a wait & see attitidue. Having said that, if Bollman cannot work wonders with the next (Brew) crew, I'll be left wondering if someone else shouldn't be.

Eh...

1.) I don't think it's realistic for the Buckeyes to expect to have a perfect defense a la the 2002 unit to come along often in this age of diverse offenses. You can't. You give up only 13 points to State Penn you need to win the game. It's that simple. The D played fantastic vs a tough team. Darryl Clark was a load to bring down. Their offense was impressive to me. You couldn't force them into mistakes. State Penn might be favored to win the B10 next year because of Clark and Royster and the lines. I don't care who's catching the ball.

2.) I'm in agreement with BKB regarding the issue of TP's fumble, Rubin made a great play and we couldn't fall on the fumble.

3.) I tend to disagree with the assessment of LJB on the issue of the talent level of the online vs coaching and scheming. There are plenty of less talented olines in the country that manage to not get consistently manhandeled.

4.) Whomever mentioned the idea about the way Tressel has his team's play and the issue of it allowing one play to affect the outcome too much was dead on.

5.) I tend to lean also toward DBB's assessment that the expectations for this team should have been clearly downgraded after the Ohio game and especially the USC debacle. Thus while during the game I was frusterated with way the game was going I was not surprised at the outcome and was pretty much fine afterwards.

6.) I live in the heart of the Big 12 country.Man, am I jealous of some Big 12 offenseses, on the other hand, man, am I jealous that we don't get to face Big 12 defenses. This is the difference in philosphy between these teams and the Buckeyes: OU, UT, Missourri, and TT's goal on offense is to put points on the scoreboard whereas OSU's offensive goal is part of a larger goal of winning the game while not sacrificing other parts of the gameplan. The Big 12 is like baseball where the offensive and defensive gameplans are completely independant of each other while the Buckeye's operate under the more conservative approach of yesteryear in college as well as today's NFL. One can argue the merits of each approach all day long, but as long as Jim Tressel is head coach I don't see that philosophy changing whether Jim Bollman, Walt Harris, or Tony Franklin is the coordinator next year. While this approach worked exceedingly well in 2002 I'm no longer sure it will work in 2008 onward against opponents of equal or better talent.

7.) Another seperate point about offensive philosophy. We all know that Tressel likes to button things down against the sisters of the poor while these Big 12 teams will open it up against everybody. Let's be honest: is Tressel fooling anyone anymore? Is it possible that running up the score against the sisters of the poor provides valuable experience running more complicated plays against live competition with no black shirts the experience of running those plays when it is time to play the Big boys? I'm starting to believe that it might be a good idea to run as many different plays against the sisters of the poor as possible so the offense has seen it in live action and will remember the feel when the going gets tough.

8.) I know people are already talking about going 10-2 but I don't think anyone should chalk up a road trip to Illinois as a win. With the way our offensive line and Juice Williams have played this year this game still worries me even if Illinois defense is supposed to be a seive.

9.) Is anyone else rooting against PSU just so the Buckeyes don't end up in the Rose Bowl to get whipped by a pissed off 1 loss trojan team... then again I wouldn't be excited over the leftover from the Florida, Georgia, Alabama tri-fecta in the capital one bowl either. Having said that I'll be watching and rooting the rest of the way.

10.) Finally, the future is still bright. TP's throwing while still a work in progress has grown. Lamaar Thomas on return's: finally some excitement. Thadeus Gibson: Thadeus Gibson. Continully impressed with Hines. Chekwa. Ross Homan. Dane has won me over.

Here are my thoughts:

1. Guys, he's a True Freshman playing in the Big Ten. His center is a True Freshman. One of his Wide Receivers and possibly his favorite target is a True Freshman. His second running back is a Redshirt Freshman. His kick returner, the guy who sets up where he starts, is a True Freshman.

Just wait. Trust me. Next year, you will all be singing this song by the greatest band ever.
Blah.

I hate this. I fucking hate this.

Why?

Because this year we were supposed to be singing this song.. what happened to the 20 returning starters!?

So these guys are magically going to get better? If that were the case, we would have curb stomped USC.

So - does Penn State get mauled by Texas or Bama ...or Oklahoma? if they get to the BCS championship game?

Would you want JoPa to win it for the Big-10, or hope they get thumped because they are State Penn?
Big 10. I would like for them to win it all.

Do not take this the wrong way, please read all of the post:

I will be glad when Beanie is gone. Sorry but its true and here is why - ITS FOR HIS OWN GOOD!

Beanie is not a spread RB, he is best when he gets the ball out of the "I" and is running down hill and siff arming the Secondary. Out of the spread he is spending valuable momentum running east to west and losing his best assest, his down field shoulder buster. He hits his stiff arm heading east and west and allows the secondary to come up and commit to a gang tackle. When he is heading down field he is seeing more one on one tackles, tackles that he breaks everytime.

The PSU game wasn't totally on the O-Line, if you hand the ball to a speedy Saine on the read he can out run the Crashing DE's and pop outside - Beanie has to outpower them and thats why he kept getting locked up on the Read option runs.

In short, Beanie is the Best back we have, but Beanie = 'I' formation.

If we play with Pryor, I'd rather have Saine in there.

And as for Mo'. I have been pulling for you since day one when you hit the bench, and god bless you for not transferring - you got some grit - but you really broke my spirit when you fumbled that KO out of bounds man...

One of the worst posts ever.

Seriously, dude.....

Was this post intended for the gaming forum? Because that's the only way I can understand where you are coming from. Saine is a force in the console world.

Saine has not shown any upgrade in football speed over Beanie, nor the vision or strength to pick up yardage against a ferocious, fast & physical Penn State defense. Hopefully that comes with maturation and healing, but it's not there now. He is tentative and indecisive out there.
If we play with Pryor, I'd rather have Saine in there.
Saine has not come close to reaching Boom's level of play, let alone Beanie's.

While I do think our offensive line is weak and had a poor performance on Saturday, it goes much deeper than that. I don't care how good your line is, if they have 8-9 guys in the box on every play they are not going to run the ball on a consistent basis. Penn State committed to making us win the game in the air and we were not willing or able to do it. Pryor will get better in the passing game, but he needs to be put in a position to be successful and 3rd and 8-10 is not that position.

It seems to me that one week ago we had a comfortable 28 point lead going into halftime and in a perfect position to let our inexperienced QB work on timing and developing some chemistry in the passing game in a low risk situation and instead we chose to run the ball 38 times in a row.

The only other comment I have is give Lamar Thomas more opportunites to touch the ball any way possible.

that was in a five turnover game.

pryor had guys open all day, at multiple levels (short, mid and long).

if you invert 2 safeties and say beat us, you have to beat them with the pass. or linie up and bunch them in the mouth. as ljb said the defense played good but they had two chances late in the game to stop psu, they failed to. just like they failed to get off the field vs ill last year.

i still contend that we have issues.
1-effort
2-rising players. all this talk of (blank) starters/srs. you dont win with that. they provide the stability. you need the growth out of your incoming sophs and jrs. how many impact jrs do we have? beanie-yes when hes not hurt. homan-maybe. sophs? eh pickings are slim on "impact" players. a few depth/role players but not much beyond that...
