It's interesting to me how so many people see the game so differently. Unlike LJB, I thought the defense played strongly. I also thought that they did some things that many folks have been calling for (more aggression, some DL line movement) and it was effective.
I also didn't see the game as two horrible offensive teams. This was a game where both teams were relegated to poor field position for most of the game. So, scoring drives usually had to travel 50 yards to get a score. Frequently, drives would go 30 or 40 yards, but no further. To me, that's not anemic offense, but it's a field position game where the offense "wins" by gaining some first downs but ultimately gets shut down by a strong defense. In other games where you have consistently better field position, the scores would be better. And granted, the one time PSU was spotted great field position, they punched it in. I'm w/ LJB that this doesn't make this defense an "all-timer" or great defense, but I'm by no means disappointed with their play. It was inspired, full of movement and activity and shut down a team that hasn't been shut down before.
From our offensive perspective, it seems that many suggest our playcalling is predictable. I go back and look at the first few series, which actually had very little of what I'd call predicable...I mean who on God's green Earth predicted MO Wells to start the game...and a screen. It's not like we run many of those. We also had a short pass to Robo mixed in there and a missed pass to Posey along with a pass to Dane. I think Beans only ran the ball a couple times in there. I'm not saying that's good or bad, but I actually thought we mixed it up a fair bit.
I also saw what everyone else has seen in that Pryor is slow to deliver at times...not surprising for a kid. Take a look at how many sacks The Pickle took last year as a Freshman QB...it happens. Pryor will continue to grow and I think we all believe he will have a bright future. He did have a mistake at a huge point in the ballgame and in my mind, it effectively changed everything. People here have suggested that JT was "willing to sit on a 6-3 lead". I don't know if that's true, but what I DO know is that we were marching down the field, eating clock, and had some control over the game until the fumble. We seemed poised to score based upon our movement. So I don't buy it that JT was content to sit on the lead. We're just trying to get a first down there...and then boom...fumble.
Our offense seems to look good on a short field (go figure...who's offense doesn't
), but struggles with long drives. My uneducated take on this is that this happens because our line might have a few good series, but it will eventually show it's weakness at some point during a long drive - either through false start mental breakdowns or by whiffing on a block. Our OL, as has been hashed out thoroughly on this board has turned out to be far weaker than the DL. When this season started, I ignorantly thought the OL was a major strength. I now know better as I watch the good defenses just run past our linemen. I'd like to think that next year will be different, but I'm not sure that's really true. Yes, Block O recruits are widely regarded for their talent, but honestly, so are most of our OL recruits. So, maybe the next group WILL live up to the billing, but I'll have to take a wait & see attitidue. Having said that, if Bollman cannot work wonders with the next (Brew) crew, I'll be left wondering if someone else shouldn't be.
