OSU Wrestling (2008 and 2009 NCAA Runners-up)

After the first round, the Buckeyes have six wrestlers in the championship bracket (Humphrey, Jaggers, Palmer, Johnstone, Pucillo, and Bergman) and one wrestler in the consolation bracket (Triggas, who lost to the #3 seed). Palmer, Pucillo, and Bergman scored bonus points. Bergman got a pin in 27 seconds. A good start to the tournament.

In session III of the National Tourney, Jaggers (141), Pucillo (184), and Bergman (HWT) guaranteed themselves All-American honors by advancing to the semi-finals. Congrats to them.

Humphrey (133), Palmer (149), and Johnstone (157) are all alive in the consolation bracket. All three lost to the #1 seed in their weight class, Humphrey and Palmer by heartbreakers.

Edit: My mistake, Johnstone lost in the 4th consolation round. So, he and Triggas are out.

Admittedly, I'm completely ignorant of how wrestling tournaments work. Are we in contention for the NC? A top 5 finish? Top 10?

I haven't seen team scores since the end of Thursday's sessions, when we stood in 8th place. Looks like Iowa and Minnesota are too far out front to catch. Iowa State and Nebraska are also having good tournaments. We've got three All-Americans now. If those three win tonight and make the finals, that would be huge. Reece Humphrey and Lance Palmer, while in the consolation bracket, have been wrestling extremely well, and, should they win their matches tonight, would make All-American.

A top 5 finish is realistically achievable.
:osu:

Edit: Team Scores through Session III just in:

1-Iowa--67 pts, with 5 in championship bracket and 2 in consolations
2-Nebraska--47.5 pts, with 3 in championships and 3 in consolations
2-Okie State--47.5 pts, with 3 in championships and 2 in consolations
4-Ohio State--45.5 pts, with 3 in championships and 2 in consolations

So, I was right that Iowa is running away with it. But I was wrong about Minnesota--they've fallen to 8th. But it definitely looks good for a top 5 finish for the Buckeyes. With a good session tonight, top 2 or 3 is very doable.

Looks good going into tomorrows finals... We have a real chance at the runner-up trophy (we should finish tonight 2nd) - but just as bad as a chance at falling out of the top 5. We only have winning points left. Tomorrow everyone has to win their match. So far we have left:

141 J Jaggers Championship Finals
149 Lance Palmer 7th/8th match
184 Mike Pucillo Championship Finals
285 JD Bergman Championship Finals Versus Dustin Fox... again

(THIS JUST IN - IOWA HAS LOCKED 1ST place... Big Ten has a chance of going 1 and 2)

AWESOME news from the NCAA's, as always, thaks for the updates Sparky.

I was hoping going in that somehow, someway, Jeff, Mike, and JD would stand atop the platform. That it could become reality is numbing. Great to see Lance kicking some ass at the toughest weight in the country. No matter what the finish, these kids have stepped it up above and beyond. This run is turning "March Madness" into "March Insanity."

GO BUCKEYES!!! Bring home some gold.
