OSU Wrestling (2008 and 2009 NCAA Runners-up)

For ND Chief:

On the Mat with Reece Humphrey:

Heading into the last match Ohio State trailed Michigan 15-13. Reece Humphrey knew that a win would give the Buckeyes the victory. In the clutch, he delivered.

?I put a little extra pressure on myself even though I was favored in the match but you kind of get a feel for things after the whistle and can get back to normal where you just start wrestling,? said Reece Humphrey. ?The first thirty seconds he came out real hard, he wanted the win bad and I had to calm him down before I could work my technique. I stayed in good position, set up my attacks and wrestled my match. I knew what I had to do and I got it done."

The preceeding from Kevin Schlosser's OZone report.

http://www.the-ozone.net/wrestling/2007-2008/Michigan/notesandquotes.htm

And just to note: we have Indiana's National Champion Dexter Larimore already on our DL, and Illinois' National Champion Garrett Goebbel coming in. This is too much good stuff.

"I've worked so hard the last five years to get to this point, and with my family here, I was determined to get a win in front of them," he said.
Bronson walked onto the team five years ago, joining a recruiting class hailed as the top in the country by wrestling experts.
Bronson said he was impressed there were still 10 seniors left from the original class of 13.

Senior wrestler C.P. Schlatter gets tied up with his opponent during Sunday?s dual at the Sports Pavilion. Schlatter won his match ? his last dual match of his career at Minnesota.

"It's been a lot of growing for all of us," he said. "A lot of growing pains, but we're all better wrestlers and people because of this program."

Congrats to Jaggers with a great upset and Palmer for getting the PIN on Schlatter for the first time ever in Schlatter's career!

No. 9 Minnesota 23, No. 5 Ohio State 18
157: No 6 C.P. Schlatter (MINN) dec. John Johnstone (OSU), 8-5
165: No. 20 Tyler Safratowich (MINN) dec. No. 8 Colt Sponseller (OSU), 5-2
174: No. 11 Gabe Dretsch (MINN) pinned Alex Picazo (OSU), 6:48
184: No. 2 Mike Pucillo (OSU) tech. fall Jeremy Larson (MINN), 25-6 (7:00)
197: Justin Bronson (MINN) dec. John Weakley (OSU), 2-1
285: No. 2 J.D. Bergman (OSU) maj. dec. Ben Berhow (MINN); 13-3
125: No. 1 Jayson Ness (MINN) dec. Nikko Triggas (OSU); 6-0
133: No. 9 Mack Reiter (MINN) tech. fall No. 13 Reece Humphrey (OSU); 18-2 (7:00)
141: No. 8 J Jaggers (OSU) dec. No. 3 Manuel Rivera (MINN); 6-4
149: No. 7 Lance Palmer (OSU) pinned No. 3 Dustin Schlatter 3:19

As you can see, any extra win would have swung the match - Sponsellers upset loss, Weaklys close loss, Johnstones near upset. This what needs to happen so we can win the Big Ten and 'trophy' (top 4 teams) at the NCAA's.

Have faith!

Again, thanks for the update sparky. I meant to do this a few days ago but wanted to wait until after tonights State Finals. I just wonder if having Ryan here may have helped in bringing the Schlatter's to Columbus? These are the things that will hopefully change, and hopefully he can get a commit from Collin Palmer who wrapped up his undefeated junior year tonite with his third State Title. Simply two of only three brother combo's to win 4 State Titles. C.P. and Dustin as 4-Time Champs and Lance and Collin (Yea, I'll go out on a limb and predict a 4th title for Collin next year:lol:) as 4-Time Champs. Only Jim and Jeff Jordan can claim this amazing feat.

Anyway, congrats to Lance on accomplishing the unthinkable by putting Dustin to sleep. Thats one hell of a feat. Also, congrats to Collin on tonite's Championship. We'd love to see you and Lance on the mat together for one more year.

Weekend Recap and Big Ten Seeds Released
By Kevin Schlosser & Ross Thatcher
The Ohio State wrestling team had last weekend off but that does not mean that there was not a wrestling meet happening on campus or they were not hard at work. As the Buckeyes were preparing for the 2008 Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments at the Steelwood Facility; the Schottenstein Center was hosting the 2008 OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament.
The state wrestling tournament offered the Buckeyes a welcomed diversion from their training. With competition beginning on Thursday night there has been a lot of friends, family, and familiar faces in town for everyone within the program. At the same time the coaching staff was able to do some great networking and was able see the best talent that Ohio high school wrestling has to offer.

Kinda like that isn't it, sparky?

Josh was just a victim of his own weight. Right now, Palmer is the best wrestler in the State of Ohio regardless of weight. If I remember correctly, Josh hit the Podium 3 times in his career, which is one hell of an acomplishment in Ohio. Josh held his own with Collin, but realistically, it just wasn't gonna happen. I don't know Josh's weight situation, but to me it would have made more sense to go after Spicel at 140. Spicel did the same thing by getting away from Jameson, although Jameson was beaten dead to rights in his opening match, was literally "pinned" for about 3 seconds yet the ref refused to hit the mat. And this happened TWICE in his opening match to a kid that got decked in the first round of consolations! Funny sport, isn't it?

Anyway, just want to add how much I love your contribution to this site. I wrestled in 8th grade and that was it, realized that my body type was suited more for baseball, beer, pizza, and burgers. These kids that hit the mat have my highest respect, because thay are the ones who run past my house on Thanksgiving and Christmas while I'm stuffing my fat face with turkey, Pumpkin Pie, and any other piece of food I can get my hands on. Wrestlers are a different breed, and a breed that I wish alot more people would tune in to.

Anyway, keep the site updated on your "cousins" prospects. His resume should bring (if they haven't already) some nice college offers. I'd love to know what's in his future, will give me someone else to follow on the Mat over the next few years.

Peace.

Josh couldnt cut anymore. I personally thought he should put on the 5 pounds (Jim, his dad, is from the school of cut as much as possible) and go up. My cousins are wrestling with the younger Yetzer, Justin (who is good also). So Josh and Justin had to coordinate weights and Justin went 140... I wrestled with the older Yetzers, Josh and Nate. Nate is the Assitant Coach at VaTech now.

Josh Speelman, SR= 47-2 2nd at state ;jr 8th/state 5th GR Nationals ; soph-4th committed to OHIO U.

Gavin Speelman, jr= 34 - 8 FR/GR National Team member

Zane Speelman, 2007 3rd FR and GR Schoolboys State Championship

There is a fourth son, just a baby though.

Wrestling: Buckeyes fit, upbeat going to league meet

Saturday, March 8, 2008 2:59 AM
By Jeremy McLaughlin

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State wrestlers were having enthusiastic conversations before practice last week. There was joking, laughter and an overall good feeling emanating from the Steelwood practice facility. The Buckeyes typically have not entered the Big Ten tournament in such jovial fashion.
The meet has been a house of horrors in recent years. Ohio State has placed eighth twice, ninth once and 11{+t}{+h}, or last, twice in the past five seasons. The Buckeyes haven't finished as high as third in 15 years.
Worse, the Buckeyes have returned bloodied and beaten. Two seasons ago, Kirk Nail had to default three matches because of a neck injury and J Jaggers tore knee ligaments and missed the national tournament.
