Thanks again sparky. Gonna go'a'googlin, but in the meantime, what the hell happened to Palmer and Sponseller? Lance is in a tough weight, but I expected better then 6. And for Sponseller not to even place? WTF?

OSU roundup: Pucillo wins 184 title in Big Ten wrestling

Monday, March 10, 2008 2:57 AM

Ohio State sophomore Mike Pucillo won the 184-pound class and the Buckeyes finished fifth at the Big Ten wrestling championship yesterday in Minneapolis. Seven Ohio State wrestlers qualified for the NCAA championships March 20-22 in St. Louis.
Pucillo (29-1) defeated Tyrel Todd of Michigan 4-3 in the final to win his first conference championship.
Senior heavyweight JD Bergman lost 2-0 to Dustin Fox of Northwestern in the final. Bergman was also a runner-up in 2004 and 2007.

Sponseller has been on a down swing for about 3 weeks now, culminating this weekend. It doesn't surprise me seeings how long the College season is on a freshman. College starts 2 weeks earlier and ends 4 weeks later then high school. He is probably physically gased and then his two big loses the last week probably finished him off mentally before the tourney started. He had a tough match against in his first match (a previous rematch) and then had the unfortunate luck to meet Luke Manuel who wrestled out of his mind through the Consies to win four straight and take third as an Unseed.

Palmer lost by one in his first match, and then beat two good wrestlers before giving up a victory to Patascil. Palmer was ahead but let Patascil score an escape and takedown late to win. didnt get to hear his finals match, so dont know about that one, probably defaulted to rest for NCAAs (never heard anything about him getting injured).

We should actually be looking forward toTriggas, Johnstone and Weakley doing what I asked for in getting us those extra points we were going to need to win the tourney. If Sponeller places (+14), Bergman (+7) wins his finals and Picazo gets a win or two(+4), we easily finish 2nd and have a real shot at winning the title.

If you download the brackets, you will see a rediculous first day of upsets. Like Craig Henning of Wisconsin, last year 2nd NCAAs, go 2 and out and will not even qualify for this years NCAAs.

Thanks sparky. I actually know better than to actually ask the initial question, but you get soooooo revved up looking forward to this thing and then "BAM" some disappointment. 149 in the Big Ten might as well be 149 at the NCAA's. And, for many years I have thought of Lance as "unbeatable" but then the reality sets in. No matter how good you are, there is always some one out there that can beat you. And, the absolute beauty of wrestling is that because "A beat B, and B beat C" that A will beat C is not reality. I grew up in the shadow of the Mentor Meatgrinder and over the years watched many a 2nd or 3rd place finisher there stand atop the podium at State's the following week. My home schools only State Champ in history beat the same kid in his final match that he beat for 3rd place at Mentor the week before. Wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Lance advance far at the NCAA's. Wouldn't it be nice to see #6 in the Big Ten get to the finals? It could happen. Also, I expect alot out of Jaggers, obviously Pucillo, and Bergman. This team still has a serious shot at a coming in anywhere from #5 to # 8. Would be a nice accomplishment. Let's keep'em crossed.

Peace.

Hopefully the same guys so up, with extra points generated again from Triggas and Johnstone.

Palmer, Jaggers, Pucillo and Bergman should all get AA honors, with all three having a more than serious shot at Top 3.

Fox just weighs too much for Bergman, JD needs a TD and ride first period, ride second period then kick and run like a mother in the third for a 3-1 win. Sadly a wrestlers ego wouldnt even be able to fit in the RWSF thread, let alone move him to deny tying up.

Triggas, Johnstone, and Humphrey can all score points, and one of them could sneak into the top 8 (All-American).

Fox is a huge dude, but JD can beat him. He does need to find a takedown that will work. When he's on the bottom, he needs to keep his hips down after the stand-up so Fox can't put him in the air. With two weeks to work with Tommy, I think they'll come up with a good game plan.

ESPN - Fierce competition in Big Ten wrestling's 149-pound class - College Sports

Fierce competition in Big Ten wrestling's 149-pound class
Bubba Jenkins has a world title, yet the Penn State sophomore couldn't claim one of the top three seeds in this weekend's Big Ten wrestling meet.

Northwestern's Ryan Lang spent his junior season on top of the national rankings, and a year later, he's No. 7 -- in his own conference.
Dustin Schlatter once was hailed as unbeatable by some followers of the sport, but now the Minnesota junior isn't even a consensus pick to reach the finals of a tournament he's already won twice.

Results of the 149 Weight Class:
#1 Brent Metcaff 1st
#2 Dustin Schlatter 2nd
#3 Josh Churella 3rd
#4 Bubba Jenkins 5th
#5 Lance Palmer 6th
#6 Jake Patacsil 4th
#7 Ryan Lang 7th
#8 Grant Paswall 0-2
U.S. Kurt Kinser 8th

Wrestling Notes, & Quotes
By Kevin Schlosser and Ross Thatcher

The Buckeyes finished fifth at the 2008 Big Ten Tournament. While they rose as high as third in the standings, Ohio State can feel good about improving from a ninth place finish at the 2007 Big Ten Tournament. OSU also qualified seven wrestlers for the NCAA Tournament; an improvement over the six last season. The good news for the Buckeyes is that they were a lot closer to first than they were to finishing ninth.

Bucks dream of winning team title

Wednesday, March 19, 2008 Pat Galbincea

Plain Dealer Reporter
Ohio State sophomore Mike Pucillo and Buckeyes wrestling coach Tom Ryan both dream big - a reason they get along so well.
Pucillo dreams of winning the 184-pound weight class in the 2008 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships being held Thursday through Saturday in St. Louis. Ryan believes the Buckeyes can win the team championship.
In actuality, Pucillo - a state and national high school champion at 189 pounds for Walsh Jesuit in 2005 - is probably closer to achieving his goal than Ryan. The Strongsville native enters the tournament as a Big Ten champion and undefeated in 25 matches. He is the No. 2 seed behind undefeated Iowa State sophomore Jake Varner (also 25-0), the national runner-up last season.
@StoryAd
"I like my chances of winning," said Pucillo, who was the Buckeyes' lone Big Ten champ. "I just have to do what I'm expected to do. Last year, when I finished sixth in the country, I hurt my shoulder in the Big Ten Tournament, and it never healed. I feel a lot better this time than I did a year ago, so I figure it's time to kick some butt."
