Weakly continues to display awesome strength but no conditioning and desire.

Colt continues to get into high intensity high scoring matches.

J J won Big Ten wrestler of the week.

Disagree on Weakley. My take is he is a tremendous athlete who doesn't know how to wrestle. If he can learn wrestling, he can be a good one. If not, well . . .

Agree on Sponsellor. He is something special. He couples Iowa level intensity with an impressive set of skills. While it may be premature to prognosticate, he could become one the the Buckeye all-time greats.

Tom Ryan has made great strides in developing the program. The future is bright. Hell, the present is bright.

BTW, keep posting this stuff. Some of us follow the wrestling team, even if we do not post too much.

Agreed Hiney, hope sparky keeps up with the posts. Also agree with the present looking great. If this thing clicks at the right time, I can see us as high as #3-#5 at the NCAA's. Regardless, Ryan is in the process of making it a monster.

Wrestling: Riding a roller coaster
Buckeyes' Picazo endures grueling ups and downs of dropping a weight class

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Neal C. Lauron DISPATCH
After a solid 10-3 start this season, Ohio State's Alex Picazo has found rough going in his transition from wrestling at 174 pounds after two seasons at 184.

0208_picazo3_sp_02-08-08_C6_IH99VF0.jpg

OSU coach Tom Ryan appreciates the sacrifices senior Alex Picazo has made for the Buckeyes, as well as the example he sets in doing so.

Alex Picazo thought Ohio State could be one of the best teams in the Big Ten this season. He wanted to be part of it but wasn't sure where he would fit.
Picazo, a Grandview graduate, had wrestled at 184 pounds his sophomore and junior seasons. He was expected to compete at that weight last season with transfer Mike Pucillo before Picazo injured a hand. Picazo redshirted. Pucillo became an All-American.

Watching no4 Minn v no11 NU

Just finished watching undefeated (galion Ohio) Dustin Fox flop all over his over matched redshirt frosh opponent, nothing to report. Common HWT wrestling.

That no1 Ness for Minny, oh my. 28-0 (now 29-0) with 17 pins already. Beat the no3 kid last week 14-2 and just knocked of no. 5 13-3.

My outlook right now is: we have a great chance at the big ten championship. I think our major point scorers are in the right positions to give us a great shot at the Big Ten title (seriously, i we do well there, I think we can hope to get some extra points out of guys like weakly to make the team podium at the NCAA's) We maynot be unbeatable from top to bottom, but I feel with some 'freak' wins we could come out the highest we have seen in a REAL long time... we are back...

stay tuned for Lang and the schlatters update after their matches...

Lang vs low below 500 guy... 17-1 lang.

Dustin Schlatter scratched, C.P. won by pin.

33-12 Minny, 3 pins and a major really killed NU's shot at the upset.

I hope Weakly can get it together. I love being able to root for guys that are from around my area or that I have played against. He was a tough guy to tackle in football too. Its great to see Sponseller doing so well but it is no surprise he used to go into the gym and wrestle with his brother on Christmas day.

Lack of bonus points dooms 'M' in weekend road trip

By Ian Kay, Daily Sports Writer on 2/11/08

iid8lrm8.jpg
Senior Eric Tannenbaum captured a 10-4 victory against Ohio State, but a controversial no-call on a takedown in the closing seconds gave him just a minor decision. The match was a deciding factor in the Wolverines' 16-15 loss. (RODRIGO GAYA/Daily)

On a weekend of missed opportunities for the Michigan wrestling team, even fifth-year senior captain Eric Tannenbaum's key victory couldn't be considered a complete success.
Leading 10-4 with just 12 seconds left in his 165-pound match, the third-ranked Tannenbaum shot at Ohio State's eighth-ranked Colt Sponseller, bringing him to the mat. Though Tannenbaum appeared to have control over both of Sponseller's legs, the referee refused to issue a takedown.
Tannenbaum settled for a six-point decision win, giving No. 6 Michigan three team points. Had he gained the extra takedown, the victory would have been a major decision and would have provided the Wolverines an extra bonus point.

A new tradition was inaugurated this weekend. Wrestlers who beat Michigan, as a team, will now receive a gold singlet. I like it. Congrats to the 2008 Buckeye wrestlers for being the first recipients of this earned honor.

That is fricken awesome. Good idea. Can we get a gold singlet Plaza item? Oh wait... broken plaza....

Tressel helps OSU grapple with UM

Tuesday, February 12, 2008
From wire reports
The Ohio State wrestling team borrowed some of football coach Jim Tressel's Michigan magic on Sunday.
The seventh-ranked Buckeyes, with Tressel serving as honorary coach, scored a 16-15 dual-meet victory over the No. 6-ranked Michigan Wolverines. A wrestling-record crowd of 5,341 watched at St. John Arena in Columbus.
OSU senior All-America heavyweight J.D. Bergman from Oak Harbor, Ohio, moved up the career wins list with his 121st, a 9-2 decision over Chad Bleske. Bergman is tied for eighth place all-time with ex-Buckeyes assistant Ken Ramsey (1987-92).
@StoryAd
OSU took a 13-12 team lead with two weight classes remaining. Tressel sat with wrestling coach Tom Ryan as OSU won the meet after final bout of the evening when sophomore Reece Humphrey (133) decisioned Chris Diehl, 7-2. The Wolverines had beaten OSU 14 straight matches since Feb. 4, 1994.
