DiAgosta signing to wrestle at Ohio State
By PAUL EDGAR, [email protected]

EAST LIVERPOOL ? East Liverpool standout and The Review?s 2007 Wrestler of the Year, Eric DiAgosta, will be displaying his skills in Columbus next year as a member of the Ohio State wrestling team.

In two separate reports to The Review Tuesday, it was stated DiAgosta intends to sign with the Buckeyes as a wrestler.

East Liverpool wrestling coach Todd Smith confirmed the report, but DiAgosta did not return phone calls although The Reveiw was experiencing phone and Internet problems Tuesday evening.

?This is big news for us,? Smith said. ?Eric is on Cloud 9.?

DiAgosta, who was 46-2 this year bringing him to 113 career wins, chose Ohio State over several other schools not only for its wrestling program but for academic reasons as well.

?(Ohio State) had his degree in civil engineering and that?s what he wanted to pursue,? Smith said.

DiAgosta (6-foot-3, 285 pounds) was first team OVAC this year and placed third at the OHSAA Div. II State Wrestling Tournament.

Oak Harbor's Cody Magrum, a two-time state wrestling champion, verbally committed to Ohio State yesterday during an unofficial visit to the university, his mother Sheri said.

Magrum, who will be a senior in the fall, cannot make his intentions official until Nov. 8, the first day of the NCAA's early signing period.

Magrum will join a program on the rise under second-year coach Tom Ryan.

The Buckeyes finished 10th at the NCAA tournament in March, producing four All-Americans, including Oak Harbor product J.D. Bergman.

Magrum, who will begin his career at 174 and then move to 184 pounds in college, is OSU's first commitment in the 2008 recruiting class.

Magrum defeated St. Paris Graham's David Thompson 3-1 at 171 pounds to win his second state title in March. Magrum's career record is 109-15.

Magrum verbals to Ohio State
By MATTHEW HORN
Sports Writer

Oak Harbor's Cody Magrum has dreamed of wrestling at Ohio State for most of his life. But when Magrum verbally committed to the Buckeyes last week, Ohio State coaches may have been even more thrilled than Magrum.

Ohio State wanted him really bad and wanted him to commit early to use Cody as starting piece for that class," Rockets coach George Bergman said. "Last year they had the No. 2 class in the country. When he committed Friday the coaches jumped out of their seats and it made their day. It was fun to see college coaches so excited about a kid from Oak Harbor committing to Ohio State. I'll never forget that. It was special to be a part of it."

OSU Wrestling: Summer Notes & Quotes
Kevin Schlosser

The Ohio State Wrestling Team has made great strides under the leadership of Coach Tom Ryan. In fifteen months, the perception of the program has reversed and expectations have been raised across the board. While Ryan may not have biggest name at the time of his hire or the popular pick, few would argue that Ohio State did not find the right man for the job.

?Initially we were selling what could happen at Ohio State.? A satisfied Tom Ryan continued, ?We achieved a number of our goals in the first year, but a lot of hard work remains to get to the top.?

Since taking over for Russ Hellickson, Ryan has assembled the best coaching staff in the country, finished in tenth place at the NCAA Tournament, and recently signed the number one ranked recruiting class in the country. With six returning NCAA qualifiers, four returning All Americans, and some talented freshman added to the mix; Ohio State is expected to be ranked inside the top ten.

?We can?t rest on what we have accomplished; we need to keep focused on our goals.? Ryan continued, ?By challenging ourselves to realize our potential; our vision is become a reality for both our wrestlers and the program.?

The Big Ten is the toughest and deepest wrestling conference in the country. Last year nine out of eleven teams finished the season in the top twenty and every team was ranked during the season. In the end, the conference qualified seventy-two for the NCAA Tournament and had thirty-one All Americans with seven finalist and three national champions. The Big Ten returns twenty-five All Americans and sixty-one NCAA qualifiers. Coach
Tommy Rowlands acknowledged the challenges ahead.

?To be the best you have to beat the best and that is what Big Ten wrestling is all about. When we take the mat at the NCAA tournament, we will be tested and ready to go.?

Congrats to tOSU assistant coaches Joe Heskett and Tommy Rowlands for their 5th place finishes in the freestyle World Championships. Of course, they both wanted to medal, but this finish will set them up well for a run at a 2008 Olympic medal. Congrats also to Coach Lou Roselli, another OSU assistant coach, for a fourth place world finish. Congrats also to the USA Greco-Roman team for an amazing first place finish. Looking forward to the likes of JD Bergman competing on the 2008 Olympic team.

Wrestler Joe Heskett forced to retire by heart ailment

Posted by [email protected] October 03, 2007 21:40PM

Taking a break from football for a moment for a wrestling story that's both lucky and unlucky. A shorter version of this will be Thursday's Plain Dealer, but since I wrote it all, here it all is.
DOUG LESMERISES
Plain Dealer Reporter
COLUMBUS - Two weeks ago, former Walsh Jesuit wrestler and three-time Ohio high school champion Joe Heskett was in Azerbaijan wrestling for Team USA.
One week ago, he was lying on a training table at Ohio State, his heart racing, his life in danger.
Today, he's in a hospital bed, a heart defibrillator implanted in his chest, his wrestling career over.
Eight months from now, the U.S. Olympic wrestling trials will take place in Las Vegas without him, Heskett's Olympic dream gone.
But in some ways, the 29-year-old husband and father, a volunteer assistant wrestling coach at Ohio State, is a lucky man today.

What a shame. Coach Heskett was a phenomenal wrestler, and could well have contended for gold in the next Olympics. He was a champion at every level. The only time I had the privilege of watching him live was at the High School Nationals in 1997, where he won Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Best wishes on a full recovery, and a successful career after competition.
