OHIO STATE WRESTLING

Monday, February 05, 2007 Pat Galbincea

Plain Dealer Reporter
Four-time state wrestling champion J Jaggers never looked worse on an Ohio wrestling mat than he did Sunday at St. Edward High School - yet he was the hero in Ohio State's 18-16 victory over Northwestern in front of a standing room-only crowd.
Competing in the final bout of the day at 141 pounds, the Buckeyes sophomore scored a 7-5 decision over Wildcats sophomore James Kohlberg to give OSU (8-4 overall, 3-1 Big Ten) its comeback victory.
Jaggers, a Chanel graduate, was supposed to meet four-time St. Edward state champ Ryan Lang, the nation's No. 1-ranked 141-pounder, but Lang was sidelined with shoulder bursitis.

U-M outmuscles the Buckeyes

Team rallies for 1st victory of season
Monday, February 12, 2007BY ANTOINE PITTS
News Sports Reporter

Already with no wins in five prior Big Ten dual meets, Sunday's start didn't look promising for the University of Michigan wrestling team.
Josh Churella dropped the opening 149-pound match - just his third loss of the season - putting the Wolverines behind early to Ohio State at Cliff Keen Arena.
But Michigan rallied with some big, and sometimes unexpected wins, in other weight classes to claim a 21-15 victory over the Buckeyes.

Wrestlers won't look past Buckeyes

Eric Mandel - The Daily Iowan

Before No. 1 ranked Minnesota tries to light up the black-out expected at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Feb. 18, the Iowa wrestlers have some Buckeyes to attend to.

With the Big Ten championships a mere 18 days away, the Hawkeyes (13-4, 4-2 in Big Ten) have two Big Ten tests remaining, and they know they can't overlook the 17th-ranked Ohio State squad just because a date with Minnesota looms closely behind.

To provide some further perspective on the Buckeye's 10th place finish at the NCAA Championships--and some notes on the dominance of the Big Ten in NCAA wrestling.

The Buckeyes had 4 All-Americans. Only two teams had more. Minnesota (1st place) and Michigan (6th place) each had 5. Only five other teams had 4 All-Americans--Iowa St (2nd), Northwestern (4th), Okie St (5th), Hofstra (7th), and Cornell (12th).

All four Buckeye All-Americans are back next year. And, we have compiled one of the top recruiting classes.

The Big Ten sent 72 wrestlers to the Tourney, and 31 earned All-American. That's 43.06%. The next highest percentage (AA/entrant) was for the Big 12 at 34.21%. Of the 80 All-Americans, the Big Ten had 31 (or 38.75%). Again, the Big 12 was next with 13 (or 16.25%). Note--the Buckeyes sent 6 to the Tourney and 4 earned All-American. That's 66.67%. And, did I mention that all four are returning?

MILLERSBURG -- Colt Sponseller turned in a career like no other in area wrestling history.
The West Holmes senior became the first local to win three state wrestling championships when he captured the Div. II 160-pound title at Ohio State's Value City Arena on March 3.
So it should come as no surprise that the Ohio State-bound grappler has been voted as The Daily Record's first three-time Wrestler of the Year honoree.
Sponseller found the perfect segue between his last outing for the Knights and the scholarship he has to wrestle for the Buckeyes -- spelling out O-H--I-O for the nearly 16,000 fans at the state finals after winning his last title.
