THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

It had been years before Ohio State defeated a No. 1-ranked team earlier this week. Now, the Buckeyes could do it twice in six days. No. 6 Ohio State (13-2) plays host to top-ranked Iowa (11-1) at 7 p.m. Friday in St. John Arena. It is the Buckeyes' first match since defeating then-No. 1 Penn State on Sunday to finish fifth at the national duals.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
palmer19_01-19-08_C3_LN93RGE.jpg
NEAL C. LAURON dispatch
Ohio State's Lance Palmer gets a leg up in his 149-pound match against Iowa's Brent Metcalf, but not to his advantage.

Ohio State had two objectives in last night's Big Ten dual with No. 1 Iowa -- defeat a top-ranked team for the second time in six days and end the Hawkeyes' 32-match winning streak against the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes were optimistic they could do both, especially after beating No. 1 Penn State on Sunday. But Iowa, which took over the top spot Tuesday, ended those hopes with victories in the first four matches on the way to a 24-10 win in St. John Arena.
Colt Sponseller (165 pounds), Mike Pucillo (184) and J.D. Bergman (heavyweight) won for Ohio State.

For those interested, I am sure the Schlatter brothers are Ohio bred. No others rang a bell though...

Yep, both from OH, one or both won 4 state titles. It is good to see tOSU's new coach doing a better job keeping the top wrestlers in state than Helickson did, I thought that was his one failing.

I wonder if Cyler Sanderson is Kyle's brother if so, [sarcasm]that's a lot of originality by their parents.[/sarcasm]

Solid performance..... BTW It's about time OSU fans got interested in things other than the friggin band..... :2004:

I agree Chief, I never wrestled, but my brother in law did in HS dating my sis, so I've always followed it. The tOSU wrestling program is gigantic sleeping giant (redundant, but applicable, I think) the number of former Ohioans who excel at the collegiate level is mind-boggling, if Ryan can keep a good amount of that talent in state, tOSU should be a top 5 team annually.

IA v tOSU (dual)

Did anyone watch this match?...
"Ohio State had a slim chance for a win after Pucillo's match if freshman John Weakley could have won at 197. He went four overtimes with Chad Beatty in a match that ended 2-2, but Beatty won with a seven-second riding-time advantage.?" - Dispatch

I think Weakly was very unprepared for this match and really had a "highschool freshman" mistake ladden match. First off, Chad Beatty (IA) is a 6 win - 5 loss soph, second he was wrestling up 2 weight classes!!! Any seasonded wrestler knows if you got a kid by 20-odd pounds, then you HAVE to dog him. Weakly should have been manhandling and pound Beatty. Instead Weakly let Beatty stay neutral and at arms length where Beatty would obviously be quicker. Second, when Weakly was riding, he should have been riding higher on the chest and wearing Beatty out. In NO WAY EVER should a guy 20 pounds less have more gas left in the tank than you after 6 overtimes!!!! (not to mention all the times Weakly actually got overpowered and pushed out of the circle)

Overall, Weakly really showed a lack of Wrestling skills in a match where just his freak power should have been enough. He needs to wake up or his current 6-10 record is only going to get worse. At this level there shouldn't be much 'educating' left but Weakly left me with a lot to be desired out of a D-1 recruit.

Sponseller, a freaking man child.

tOSU as a whole? Either they were just to psyched, the National duals was too much or Iowa needs to be checked for 'blood doping' because we ran out of gas in EVERY third period we were in.

IMHO, with the right recruiting prowless, the Schlatters, Lang, Luke, and Fox should have never gotten out of Ohio. Granted Bergman was coming to tOSU but still...

Thanks Sparky, yea I meant Cael, forgot the [sarcasm]interesting[/sarcasm] spelling. You asked if anyone watched this match, unfortunately I did not. I know that the B10 Network shows some wrestling, but with Time Warner (and Directtv jacking me around on appointment setup, over the last 3-5 weeks) I haven't had the pleasure to catch this years version of the Buckeye grapplers.
