OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Trevor Thompson, a 6-11 freshman who was given his release by Virginia Tech, tweeted yesterday that Matta will be in Florida today to visit him on spring break. Thompson, an Indianapolis native, said he was visited yesterday by Indiana coach Tom Crean and will be today by Purdue’s Matt Painter. Butler reportedly is involved, also.

Thompson averaged 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 16.2 minutes for the Hokies and made 11 starts. Unlike Lee, he would have to sit out next season before having three years of eligibility.

It would be nice to land Thompson. I know the numbers aren't anything special but he showed well in a few games, especially at the end of the season. Plus, Amir, Trey, and Anthony Lee will all be gone after next season, leaving a huge void at the center position. Thompson can be a valuable backup at the very least in 2015-16.

Agree but just do not know how this would affect our recruitment of Giddens whom we seem to have a pretty good chance of getting but landing both of these guys would be extremely nice.

More on Thompson and in reading this article things look very very good for Ohio State. Has had a relative and some friends graduate from The Ohio State University and his father played some minor-league ball for the Clippers. I would not be shocked to see him commit on his visit.
Trevor Thompson, a 7-foot freshman at Virginia Tech who will transfer after this semester, will visit Ohio State in two weeks, his father said today after Thompson and his parents met with coach Thad Matta and assistant Jeff Boals in Florida, where the family is on spring break.

The Thompsons also met this weekend with coaches from Indiana, Purdue and Butler.

Thompson’s father, Ryan, who played major league baseball for nine seasons and six different teams -- and for the Columbus Clippers for two months in 2000 -- said more than 20 teams have expressed interest in his son but that Trevor is limiting his options to the four because he wants to play nearer the family’s Indianapolis home.

But all four schools might not receive visits.

“We might take all four, but I doubt it,” Ryan Thompson said. “We’ll probably take two or three.”

Ohio State will get the first visit the weekend of April 11-13, Ryan Thompson said. No visits are permitted next weekend because it is during an April 3-10 “dead period” for recruiting mandated by the NCAA.

Ryan Thompson did not rule out the possibility of Trevor making a commitment to the Buckeyes without visiting another school, as 6-9 Temple transfer Anthony Lee did yesterday after a two-day visit to Ohio State.

“Thad was awesome” during the visit today, Ryan Thompson said. “We’re very serious about Ohio State. Ohio State is Ohio State.”

Any Jay Burson types out there who can just flat out shoot that we can bring in for 14?

The Buckeyes had one right in their backyard for 2014 if they would have gone after him. Dakota Mathias from Elida is as good of a sharp-shooter at the high school level as you'll see, but he was not highly recruited and chose to end his recruitment early as soon as he got a Big Ten-level offer. Instead, he'll be toiling with Purdue the next four years. Division II Co-Player of the Year along with Luke Kennard.

I think OSU has some really good shooting coming in, though, when you consider Kam Williams basically being a brand new player, along with Russell and Bates-Diop. All three of those guys can shoot it.
