OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Even with Lee and Thompson, OSU still has an open scholarship. Would it be worth going after Jon Horford if for no other reason that to piss off TTUN? He would surely get at least 10 minutes a game.
Don't B1G league rules prevent him from being on scholarship if he transfers to another B1G institution for one year? That would kind of be a deal breaker.

That rule changed about 2 years ago. The player can now be on scholarship at another BIG school, but he loses a year of eligibility. For example, when Brian Bobek transferred from OSU to Minnesota, he had used one year of eligibility at OSU, lost a year in transferring, and could then play as a 3rd year junior at Minnesota, even after sitting out a year.

I don't know how that would affect someone in Horford's situation since he only has one year of eligibility left anyway.

I see. So it sounds like he wouldn't be eligible to play next year in the B1G and would sacrifice his only year of eligibility if he transferred within the B1G. Even worse deal for Horford than I thought.

Final ESPN 100 rankings for the class of 2014 were released today.

13. D'Angelo Russell - 5* SG (96/100 grade), #1 SG, #1 in Kentucky
22. Keita Bates-Diop - 5* SF (92), #6 SF, #3 in Illinois
28. Jae'Sean Tate - 5* SF (90), #8 SF, #1 in Ohio
UR. David Bell - 3* Center (74), #37 Center, #7 in Ohio

They list our 2014 class at #5 overall, trailing only Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina and Louisville.

Clearly, Thad needs to go. It's too bad Bruce Pearl is no longer available.

I thought I would put this here for reference purposes. Does not go pas July 31, 2014.
Key NCAA dates in basketball recruiting
To simplify it all, here are the key dates and information for the Class of 2015.

April 24-July 5: Quiet period*

A coach cannot watch players compete at any location. In-person contact is allowed between a coach with a player or their legal guardian only if it occurs on the college campus. Coaches can still call the player or legal guardian and players can still visit the campus.

* a few exceptions are included in this timeframe

April 25-27: Evaluation period (only certified events allowed)

A coach can evaluate a player's abilities at their high school or another place where they are competing. However, a coach cannot have off campus in-person contact with the player or legal guardian. Phone calls from coaches to the player or legal guardian and college campus visits are still allowed.

May 22-30: Dead period

College coach cannot make in-person contact with players or legal guardians. No evaluation is permitted. The coach can still make telephone calls to players or legal guardians. (There is a possible exception that allows for an evaluation period during this time, but the time is undetermined as of now).

July 6-31: Dead period*

* a few exceptions are included in this timeframe

July 9 (5 p.m) -13 (5 p.m.): Evaluation period.

July 16 (5 p.m) -20 (5 p.m.): Evaluation period.

July 23 (5 p.m) -27 (5 p.m.): Evaluation period.

Calendar has yet to be released for beyond July 31. National Signing Day will be in early November.

It seems like 2016 is going to be a particularly good year in Ohio prep talent, largely due to a strong crop of forwards. If you can get elite players in the 2016 class, I am not in favor of settling for lesser prospects in 2015 when at this point (aside from Giddens or Bragg) it seems anybody else they are likely to add in that 2015 class will just be providing depth. Just my opinion but I wouldn't mind a small class in 2015 with them adding maybe only one more player to the class (preferably a C). You can't count on any scholarships opening up for sure so basically they can only plan on having however many they bank from 2015. Which if they add three more to the 2015 class to produce a class of 5, they would only have one opening for 2016 if my calculations are correct, and I think they need at least 2 to pursue 1) King and 2) Funderburk/Spellman. So ultimately I would be opposed to OSU's 2015 class having more than 4 players in it. And right now I think the priorities are SG and C.

Re: the SG position, that is an area where IF OSU is determined to add somebody in the 2015 class or via transfer right now, I would probably go for a transfer if they can't get Grandstaff (which getting him seems to be a longshot anyway). So right now the transfer options potentially are Eron Harris (WVU) and ... ? I for one would be in favor of going after Seth Allen, who it was announced today that he will transfer from Maryland. Of course, now that Maryland is going to the Big Ten, that might kill any chance of that transfer, but Maryland is still in the ACC for now, the official change won't be until July 1st, so I feel that if you transfer while they're still in the ACC, they shouldn't be able to force you to pay your own way for a year. Still would have to sit out a year, but that's not a problem since there is an open scholarship anyway. Those three options are the ones that would be at the top of my list if I'm OSU and looking at SG options, and I'm not sure there is another that I'd go for, so I'd say if they can't get one of those three then I'd want them to just save the scholarship for the 2016 class.

Seth Allen is only listed at 6'1" and referred to as a PG, but he averaged only 3 assists last season (13 points). So really more of a scorer probably better suited to the 2, although having the skill to run the point also is a positive in terms of what OSU might need for their team in a couple years. A sharp-shooting guard who can play both backcourt spots would be a great addition to the OSU team moving forward.

I really do not want to become Transfer U. While Harris would be a very nice, I highly doubt if we are on his radar. Grandstaff is supposedly visiting this weekend so perhaps we might know more come Monday. I take it that you do not like Kyle Ahrens and I do not understand why because he was playing pretty well before he broke his fibula and tibula. Let us see how he performs on the AAU circuit.

Kyle Ahrens has not performed well on the AAU circuit according to what I have seen. Ahrens averaged 4 ppg in a group of AAU games recently, which is not OSU-level for a shooting guard obviously. I don't expect Ahrens to get an OSU offer, the Fleming kid seems to be their fallback option at SG if their top choices fall through. If they offer Fleming we'll know that they are determined to add a shooter one way or another.

For those more in the know than I... We currently have three commits for 2015 with three big prospects left on the board. My questions are:

1) How many more scholarships do we have available for 2015?
2) What is the vibe on those three prospects? (Bragg, Giddens, and Ahmed)

Thanks in advance.
