OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

4 assists a game is a hell of a lot for a forward. Mitchell has a lot of work to do on his shooting & range, but he has a lot of other good traits. Matta hasn't had a "point forward" really ever since ET left.

I'm feeling pretty good about Harris being a solid player at OSU. Definitely feeling good about him and Grandstaff in particular in that class.

It is funny to think people can draw conclusions on Matta without even watching the man work. Having been to a few practices in the last few years the man obviously knows what he is doing, surrounds himself with very good assistants, and has a grasp on what each and every team needs to make them better. Think about what he has done since being here, this was just a football school for awhile there, and he has brought us back into being a damn near top ten team year in and out. Has he missed out on some talented big guys in recent years ? Yes, but it's tough out there and he has made due with what we have had. Appreciate this man, he is one hell of a coach and representative of The Ohio State University.

Yeah, and to tie it to this thread, the recruiting fortunes have picked up in a major way. Now the perception among recruits is that OSU is right there in line behind the top blue blood programs (DU, KU, KY, UNC), almost the same level in recruiting as Florida. There are only a handful of programs that typically recruit better on a consistent basis. It wasn't that long ago that just getting one top-100 player in a class was a victory in recruiting for OSU. Now he has a team with 8 or 9 of them, gets classes with 3-4 top-100 guys back-to back, is coming off having 4 straight Sweet 16s (losing guys early to the pros before almost every one of those seasons), and the fans aren't excited? I guess memories are short, people forget the days when OSU hoop fans could only dream of getting Jamar Butler (top in-state guard in his class, gave UC an early verbal), when the most excitement in recruiting came from a class of 3 with the 2 most highly rated of the 3 being Fuss-Cheatham and Sylvester.

I know this kid is only a freshman but he has to be the first player from East Tech that would even think about going to Kentucky..
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Since his jumper in the regional final sent East Tech to the state semifinal, Scarabs freshman Markell Johnson has become one of the most popular local basketball recruits in the Class of 2017.

As his recruitment soars, Johnson, who is being looked at by schools including Ohio State and Michigan State, spoke with Zach Fleer of Land-Grant Holy Land about East Tech and being courted by college coaches.

When asked if any particular school would be a top choice for Johnson, he singled out an SEC school and perhaps gave a hint to where a fellow big-time Cleveland recruit might be headed.

"Just like my man Carlton Bragg, [it's] Kentucky," Johnson told Fleer

Big day for Medina center Jon Teske, who picked up Ohio State and Michigan offers.
In this article the big man 6'11" says that he has lived in both Ohio and Michigan so living in Ohio right now is not going to be a factor but his father is a big Ohio State fan. Teske also says this
Teske says that both coaching staffs liked the way he shot the ball for someone who is 6-foot-11. And while, the interest is ramping up for Teske, he doesn't want to make a decision soon.

As recruiting pieces fit together, Ohio State basketball roster could set up for national title runs in two or three years

Need to keep a couple scholarships for some big-time players in 2016. The numbers seem to be working out just fine.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Recruiting is often about collecting players. It can also be about creating a team.

After watching a 2013-14 Ohio State team whose top eight players consisted of two point guards (Aaron Craft, Shannon Scott) two stretch-four power forwards who didn't play much together (LaQuinton Ross, Marc Loving), two similar defense-first wings (Sam Thompson, Lenzelle Smith) and two offensively ineffective big men (Amir Williams, Trey McDonald), the idea of creating a team, not just collecting parts, was reinforced.

Last year's Buckeyes needed a shooter. Last year's Buckeyes needed someone who could consistently get buckets inside.

I joked more than once that Ohio State just needed to swap one of the point guards to fill one of those needs at the trade deadline and they'd be fine. Craft and Scott could have run the offense for a lot of teams, and point guards can be hard to find. They had value, but on that OSU team, they were so similar, you both gained and lost something when you played them together.

In the 2015 recruiting class, the Buckeyes aren't just collecting parts. They're making a team and are close to a five-man class that you could throw out there as a starting lineup and say let's go. And combined with the incoming class of 2014 freshmen ... things looks interesting.

Ohio State has been very good under Thad Matta for 10 years, with five regular-season Big Ten titles, five Sweet Sixteens and two trips to the Final Four.

A roster needs a superstar or two to emerge, needs to play together on defense and needs to be unselfish on offense. But looking way ahead at the possibilities for 2015-16 and 2016-17, the Buckeyes should like their chances of making a run both years.

The players and the fit for the 2014 and 2015 classes look that good.

First, Ohio State may want to finish off the 2015 class with a fifth player that could finalize a true starting lineup in that group.

The Buckeyes did that with the 2010 class – Craft at the point, Jordan Sibert at the two guard, Smith at small forward, Deshaun Thomas at power forward and Jared Sullinger at center. That group plus William Buford took the Buckeyes to the 2012 Final Four.

Agreed. Unless Bragg wants in I would bank one for 2016 so we have enough for Funderburk Jr. (4), Teske (5), and King (2).Though perhaps Bragg is 1-and-done so that wouldn't matter. As of right now we only have two spots open for the 16 class.
