OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

http://highschoolsports.cleveland.c...oys-basketball-player-of-the-year-watch-poll/

Good top 10 list of guys in the NE Ohio area; short breakdown

1. Esa Ahmad, Jr, 28/12
2. Omari Spellman, Soph, 25/10/4
3. Carlton Bragg, Jr, 18/11
4. Brian Parker, Jr, 20/5
5. Gavin Skelly, Sr, 21/13 (Northwestern verbal)

Awesome young talent in the area, really looking forward to the next two years with Ahmad and Spellman battles. Last years battle was a great one, let's keep that fence up!

Also, I guess they don't include SVSM in the poll which makes no sense, just realized VJ wasn't on there.

Good stuff. I really want Bragg and Kennard, but I hope we at least get one of them.

Yeah, that's the key question about the 2015 class, will OSU get one, both or none of those two. With college basketball you need stars to be truly competitive among the nation's best, and OSU needs to get some more of them in this 2015 class to get back to where they were in 2011 and 2012. I'm guessing based on how Matta has owned the state of Ohio in terms of getting whoever he really wanted since he has came - combined with the fact that he has been after those two for plenty long - will yield positive results for the Buckeyes.

The other big question - no pun intended - is who will OSU get at the C position. They have to get someone, and the depth chart is most certainly extraordinarily attractive for a 2015 big man at this point, and combine that with OSU's stature as right there behind the top handful of programs and they most definitely should be able to get an elite C such as Moore or Giddens in the 2015 class even though he's going to have to hail from out of state.

Some interesting info regarding Ohio State basketball recruiting. I found Trey Burke's father's comments somewhat interesting and about three fourths of the way through the article it sounds like he did not want Tate committing to Ohio State. I think he has some bad feelings towards Matta.

After years of success, here's how Ohio State basketball wound up with an Ohio hole on its roster

Maybe but some of the points in the article does make sense. Thad has neglected Ohio in some cases (players mentioned in the article) and some of the guys he has recruited appears to have hit their ceilings coming out of HS. Smith, Scott, and Thompson have not developed very well at all, particularly on the offensive end. None of the three are consistent and truly fit Thad's offense (Good perimeter shooters). Williams and Trey are very stiff and erratic at best (And don't fit the athletic big man Thad likes). Take into account three of those guys will be senior starters next year (Scott, Thompson, and Williams). With Loving, ADV, Kam Wiliams and in-coming Freshmen to compete with Bates-Diop and Russell being the most likely to get the playing time. Allow me to add. I like Tate. He may be undersized but he is a strong, tenacious defender, very good rebounder and good at getting his own shot. He's my sleeper in the class.

Overall, the remainder of the season is going to be tough to weather but our basketball team has been exposed

I think you're right about the bad feelings. He is criticizing OSU taking Tate, because it's "not best" for Tate, and then also criticizing OSU for taking Scott because he turned out to be not as good as a late-bloomer from Columbus, which wasn't foreseeable. I think he has some lingering resentment over his son not being offered by OSU, and to an extent it makes perfect sense, but at the same time he's got to appreciate the implications of the fact that, at least until his junior year Trey wasn't the type of player a program at the level OSU has been will recruit, and in fact even UM (a lower level program compared to OSU at the time) was hesitant to offer him even after his junior year. I don't see any reason to be down on Tate coming to OSU, in fact I think he will bring some needed elements of toughness, athleticism and effort as those are three of the bigger things that the Bucks will be losing when Craft and Smith graduate. Tate has shown himself to be a hard worker and plays with great energy and effort. In the OSU system, he can play multiple positions (at least the 2 and 3).

Sheesh--talk about sour grapes. It's not enough for Burke's dad to point out that Thad missed out on Burke, but Burke's dad has to trash Shannon Scott in the process? At the end of the day, Benji's son had a great career at UM and was a lottery pick in the NBA draft--he needs to get over the fact that Thad missed out on recruiting his son. It happens.

Both, Brody! But being from tOSU, we must suffer from both of them......I get that Burke's dad wanted him at tOSU, who wouldn't want a 15 minute drive to see their kid play? However, has anyone thought that maybe Thad DID see the superstar in Trey? And that he'd bolt for the NBA in one-and-done fashion? Well, maybe. And here we sit, with Shannon here for this year and next. Hmmmmm.

Go Bucks

Nah. Nobody saw Trey Burke becoming what he did. If they did, he would've had better offers, but as it was he basically decided between UM and UC. Keep in mind when he decided UM was not a very appealing hoops destination considering the very limited success they had had. Matta admitted publicly that he did not foresee Burke becoming NPOY-level player, and he also has not been reluctant to recruit 1 & done players so that can't be the reason.

wasn't trey a state penn verbal at first anyways? It wasn't like the kid had offers from sparty, dook, etc...

Exactly. I guess Benji just seemed to think since there was the connection to Sully and Columbus that Trey would've gotten a longer look than most kids, but unfortunately Trey didn't blossom quite quickly enough and you can't fault Matta for wanting to get his PG as soon as possible when the top ones are in short supply.

It's funny you mentioned him pnuts. I am an Athletic Trainer @ a HS in KC and was just having a discussion about this kid with some of the boys on the basketball team @ the school I work for earlier today. Awesome skill set for a 7 footer.

You would have to think that any 6'10"-7' kid with talent would at least take a peak @ OSU w/ the way our anemic post play has been the past two years, especially with the way Matta likes to utilize one primary big guy in his offensive scheme. Amir can't give you more than 20-25 quality minutes in most games so the opportunity to come in right away and contribute is there. A lot of these big programs are stockpiling talent in the post and OSU can't seem to land a legitimate PF-C.

Sorry, I guess I was spoiled w/ Oden, Mullens, Koufos and Sully. Frustration coming out 2 weeks later...lol. He's making improvements but the Bucks are not making any type of run this year or next w/ Amir as the primary post presence down on the block.
