OL Matthew Jones (Official Thread)

Jones, a 6-foot-4, 316-pound fourth-year lineman, is at the forefront of a competition to start on the interior of the offensive line. He’s playing both guard and center, and he’s playing at a level the coaches have sought for a while.

“He is one of the most improved,” Studrawa said on Wednesday. “I would absolutely say that.”

Along with Paris Johnson and Harry Miller, Jones is one of the three frontrunners to start between returning offensive tackles Thayer Munford and Nicholas Petit-Frere. Luke Wypler and Josh Fryar are making runs for the openings, and Dawand Jones will too once he’s back in action. They appear to be behind the Johnson-Miller-Jones trio, however.

Petit-Frere mentioned that Jones has been “doing well” in spring camp, and Studrawa was overwhelmingly positive about him, too.

“With some guys, learning and getting themselves prepared is as much a mental thing as it is a physical thing. And Matt is a guy that's always had the physical tools,” Studrawa said. “He is so strong. He's quick. But eventually it gets to the point where, you know what, ‘I’m tired of not being a starter,’ and a little light goes off. It's, ‘I’m sick and tired of watching.’ And all of a sudden the demeanor and everything you do, the attention to detail and everything that you do, the toughness, carrying out a drill, that’s what Matt’s done. He's hit that point where, you know what, this is it. And he showed it that Michigan State game, and he showed it the next two games that he played.”

I've been saying the same. Every time Matt steps on the field it seems like our OLine gets better.

Watch Matt on these Tre runs. Especially the last TD run. Getting to the 2nd and 3rd level.

I came in to say the exact same thing. Dawand is a damn good OL but if we're healthy, he's #6. NPF-Jones-Miller-PJ-Munford is the best lineup we've got and while there's depth, that's the ideal lineup, with Dawand and Wypler being up next. But regardless Jones kicks ass every time he is in the game, stop overthinking it and just play him.

Agreed on both points.

Matthew Jones might not be one of the "best five" OL, but he's the best OG on the team and he should be playing there.

“I thought that it would be settled on a five,” Studrawa said Tuesday. “You think about that stuff all summer long in preparation, and I’ve never been a guy that has had the opportunity to rotate guys like that. You want to get those five in there, you want to get them comfortable with each other and you want to play them. But the fact that there’s some younger guys that have come along so well, and Matt Jones’ growth and improvement has made me do it, because the kid deserves to play.”

Jones might not end up overtaking Munford or Johnson as an outright starter at guard this season, but Studrawa said if he had to choose the top five offensive linemen on the team at the moment, “it would be a very hard decision, because he’s in the mix now.”

It could take until 2022 for Jones to get the snaps he feels like he deserves for a full season, but his coaches and teammates think Jones is poised to continue making an impact with whatever opportunities he receives before then.

"He knows he can do it, we all know he can do it, he just needs to keep staying the course," Munford said. "Because mark my words, he’s gonna be a problem later on this year and possibly when he comes back for next year. I don’t know, that’s his personal decision. But he’s gonna be a problem."
