Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Talk about irony.

My dad died on November 10, 2007. His name was "Myles."

How many people in this world do you know that are named "Myles"?

November 10, 2007, by the way, was the day the Buckeye football team lost to Illinois when they were ranked #1 as about 27 point favorites. Anyone remember the name "Juice Williams"?
Talk about a REAL bad day for a Buckeye fan, huh?

Today is March 19, 2016, and Myles Martin won a National Championship that basically no one expected. What a GREAT accomplishment for this fine young man. Crazy thing is that today ( March 19th) would have been my dad's 78th birthday.

I'm not a real spiritual person, just thinking that somehow, someway, today was a day for one "Myles" to add support to another.

Congrats to young Mr. Martin on a great accomplishment!

And to that other Myles, I miss and LOVE you, dad.

Peace

What an incredible finals for both of these incredible young men...watching them gain their first titles damn near brought tears to my eyes (for real). Both of them had such incredibly gutty matches that I forgot whatever else happened in the tourney. We win both of them and pass Iowa to get 3rd...I will take that any day. What an amazing run and I certainly think this was a great year for Ohio State wrestling. Cannot wait to see the lineup we will put out next year but for right now, just enjoy what we got to see from our boys this year.

Meant to do a projected lineup for next year after the White commit because I think we have a pretty set lineup for next year after his commitment...in my mind, we just need another guy that can go at 197 (Darmstadt from Elyria would have been nice but he is going to Cornell) and we call it a class for '16:

125: Tomasello (nothing more to say here)
133: Pletcher, Rodriguez (I think Pletcher wins this weight over Rodriguez if he can get his weight down there...Pletcher is a serious stud...maybe not immediately, but this will be a roster improvement at 133 by the time we hit NCAAs imo)
141: Ke-Shawn Hayes (Pletcher could be up to this weight and wrestle off here...not sure who wins that one if it happens but I would say Hayes, he can be a star here)
149: Micah Jordan (no way he can stay down at 141 again next year...he'll easily make the transition up one weight)
157: Jake Ryan (he's looked very good for us and has been a nice surprise...I think he can pretty easily stay at this weight)
165: Isiah White (I don't think Bo stays at 165 next year and White is a super star that can go right away...Bo sliding up and slotting in White makes the strongest lineup possible)
174: Bo Jordan (moves up and is likely the top guy at his weight, although Nickal will be right there presumably)
184: Myles Martin (word is he is actually cutting a bit to get down to 174, so my 165 talk for this year was not even an option...he can be great at 184)
197: Kollin Moore (I am pretty high on Moore and think he has a lot of potential...just have to see how he wrestles up at this weight...highly doubt Kyle Snyder gets back down to this weight)
HWT: Kyle Snyder (I think he stays up at heavy and is an obvious improvement here...but if he does go down, I would still be happy with Tav at heavy and Kyle at 197)

Some thoughts. Va Tech will do OK in the ACC but they have a ceiling at the NCAA because they don't have the elite wrestlers to complete at that level - Chishko, Walz, Haught, Epperly & Zavatsky are all AA candidates. Dance choked this year going 1-2 will have a lot of soul searching to get back to AA but he has the talent. Iowa will do no worse than this year. Gilman and Clark will contend and Sorrenson proved he was the second best 149 though I think he's maxed out his talent. The rest of their lineup is either unproven, young or underachieving. When I read the posts on their message board their fan base is resigned to the fact that they are not going to compete for NCAA championships until they start getting elite guys. OK State... Heil should be in contention again to win it. Smith should be better with one full year in the room. Marstellar is gone from what I have heard. He will either transfer or leave wrestling altogether. They will miss Derringer. That guy was a beast. He made some very good wrestlers look average. The rest of their lineup is meh. Penn State... loaded. Suriano could end up as a top 8 guy in his first year if they don't red shirt. Cortez is also a top 8 guy. Gulibon has underachieved and 141 seems to much for him. I honestly don't see anyone beating Retherford for the next 2 years. He has achieved Logan status. Nolf is at worst 2nd next year. Joseph was a hammer in HS and on the freestyle circuit. Nickal is at worst a top 3 guy again. Mccutcheon under archived but if healthy he can place top 8. Cassar is an unknown at this point. Nevills was dinged up and looked like he needed to lose weight and get in shape. Will be interesting to see if he progresses next year. The thing PSU has going for it that almost no one else has is bonus points. They have several guys that are gonna get a ton of pins and tech falls.

OSU... the open question at 125 is 'can NaTo make 125 again next year?'. In his interviews he seems to indicate this is still in question. Assuming he can, he's a top 1-2 guy again. If he goes 133 I'd have to see how he handles the jump and guys that are already at the weight - it's not a given he'd dominate. Pletcher is a stud in PA but he has some things he needs to work on at the next level. He gets a lot of shots off but doesn't convert against top guys. He is small in stature as well. A redshirt might be in order and let Jose R. wrestle 133 in 2016. Ke'Shawn Hayes looked great in his red shirt season and went undefeated. I am interested to see how that translates next year. Having Logan in the room is a huge plus for him. Micah moving up seems a certainty - though maybe moving to 157 is a better plan but at 149 or 157 he's gonna face some top notch guys. They have options at 149/157 that they can play with. Jake Ryan got better at nationals but I still think they need to continue to develop that weight with competition/recruiting. They need more firepower and I wonder if Jake can cut to 149 and be more competitive? Issiah White is a heck of a recruit but I am not sure throwing him into the lineup in 2016 is a great idea. He has had a history of academic challenges at OPRF and maybe a RS season where he can adjust to college might be in order. If not White at 165 then we may someone that is not on the radar right now but this could turn out to be a weakness next season. I think Bo going to 174 is the obvious move. He'll be a top 3 guy there instantly. Miles has the frame to get to 184 with no issue - his walk around weight is 195. I am not sold on Moore at 197. I saw some of his RS matches and I don't see the elite talent. He seems about on the level of a Cody Burcher. He's probably at best a .500 guy and pressed to make the NCAA tourney next season. Assuming Kyle returns to OSU and wrestles after the Olympics he should dominate 285 next year. If he wins a medal and endorsements come his way it may be tough to turn that down or let it sit in an account that he can't touch. He loves OSU but I wouldn't blame him if he decided to focus 100% on freestyle.

I am happy as hell for Martin but I do not understand why they did not redshirt him this season. He was pretty "lucky" when he got those 6 points and the other guy was clearly superior if I take my scarlet colored glasses off. I guess before the match when they said that Martin was a true freshman I was thinking what the hell why did not they redshirt him.

I watched all of the final matches and it seemed like every other match had some guy from PSU wrestling in it and with their incoming recruiting class they probably will dominate the national scene for quite some time uunfortunately.

I wouldn't say "lucky" at all. A lot of winning in wrestling is between the ears. Myles had a history of matches with Nickal well before he arrived at OSU. They wrestled a lot of freestyle matches in HS - you can Google those on YouTube. He came out on the short end of most of those but they were contested matches with a mistake being the difference. Same for the 3 collegiate matches this year. Nickal has had a full year in PSU's room. He's gotten to wrestle guys like Taylor, Varner, Nolf, etc for a whole year +. Myles will have that same experience next year with Bo and Kyle as well getting technical workouts with Logan, Reese, Tervel, etc.. I think Myles has more upside because he is the more physically gifted athlete of the two - no knock on Nickal because he is a good athlete as well and will always do some things better such as scamble. Once Myles learns how to generate more offense from the top position he's gonna be very tough to beat. He is already better than a lot of our guys from the bottom position. And from standing he's got a lot of offense and finesse

Back to the redshirting point... at this point it's obvious that Tom Ryan's strategy to pull both Kyle and Myles redshirt was the right call for each guy regardless of how the team race shook out - both won NCAA titles. The team race part required guys like JDJ, Kenny Courts, Mark Martin, 149, Jake Ryan to score more than 2 collective points at NCAA and they did not. That's why we didn't finish higher. This is gonna sound cruel but it's the reality of where things are... if OSU is going to compete for the top spot every year, we can't have guys not qualifying, qualifying but not winning matches or failing to finish in the top 8. The bar has been raised and the team will need to collectively match what PSU is doing if they want to be at the top again

Just want to say 'great season'. Could play the woulda-shoulda-coulda game, but the cards were dealt and then must be played. Hard to get all the stars to align properly each time. Great comebacks by both the Nat'l Champions, and the rest of the singlet guys as well. Also think the uni's are better looking this year. Coach Ryan is doing great things, and getting the great wrestlers to make those great things happen. Congrats and keep the mo' goin'. Go Bucks
