Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

Buckeyes complete the ITA midwest region sweep with a 9-8 victory in doubles. Twitter link
Matt Allare had a huge day (3 victories total) as he and Peter Kobelt paired to seal the doubles final victory over the Illini.
Three Buckeyes will be representing the S & G in Flushing Meadows in November at the ITA national champiosnips.
Congratulations to Blaz the ITA regional single's champion and welcome to the Buckeyes!
Congratulations to Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt, way to put the hammer down big time in the ITA Regionals!
And thank you Litl's grandson for helping improve Peter Kobelt's game this summer. :wink2:
A special time at Notre Dame for this Buckeye team.
Can we get a big shout out O - H !

i - o! :)

Thanks for changing the thread title BB73.
Add a 6th B10 title this year, Buckeyes.

Re. Chase to Flushing Meadow--only happens if he had won the final. He had his chance but looks like Matt Allare got some vengeance (6-3,6-4) on the ND player (Watt's his name) that took out Buchanan.
Rola will represent the S & G well this year at the Indoor championships, as will Allare and Kobelt in doubles.
BTW the final score for Allare and Kobelt in the regional double's final was 9-8 (10-8) in the tiebreaker.
Would have loved to witness this epic battle. This was against the Illini team that took out Buchanan and Rola in the quarters.
Only the 12 D1 regional single's and double's champions and the 4 Super Bowl champions of D-2, D-3, JUCO and Naia playoffs get invitations to the ITA Indoor tourney in November.
Here is the synopsis of the tournament structure.
ITA link
The singles and doubles champions from the NCAA Division I USTA/ITA Regional Championships will advance to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, New York. Columbia University will serve as the tournament host.

The most unique element of the USTA/ITA Intercollegiate Championships program is the fact that all levels of varsity college tennis (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College) are competing in one comprehensive event, and any ITA varsity student-athlete has the opportunity to play and win at the prestigious USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Complete coverage of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships is located at www.itatennis.com.

Don't intend to cause an information overload on this BP thread, however the official site has this report from the ITA regional

In the second all Buckeye final in three years, freshman Blaz Rola beat teammate Matt Allare 7-5, 6-4 to win the 2010 Midwest Regional singles title at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in South Bend, Ind., Monday. The win by Rola marked the fourth time in five seasons a Buckeye has won the singles crown. Despite not winning the singles championship, Allare rebounded with teammate Peter Kobelt to capture the doubles title for the Buckeye sweep.
"It was a good weekend for the Buckeyes," Ty Tucker, head coach, said. "We have put in the time and it was nice to see it pay off. To have two Buckeyes playing in the singles finals and a doubles team in the finals - it feels good. I thought it was one of the best tournaments we have had. Overall, I thought it was great for everyone."
With the victories, Rola, as well as Allare and Kobelt have qualified for the 2010 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which will take place Nov. 4-7 in Flushing, N.Y. The tournament serves as the second of three premier national collegiate tennis events. . . .
All-time Ohio State Midwest Regional Singles Winners
2003 - Jeremy Wurtzman
2006 - Steven Moneke
2007 - Justin Kronauge
2008 - Bryan Koniecko
2010 - Blaz Rola
Rola advanced to the final courtesy of a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Michigan's Evan King in the semifinals. In his senior season, Allare had a busy, yet memorable tournament as he also played his way to the doubles final with Kobelt, a sophomore for the Scarlet and Gray. In the semifinals of the singles draw, Allare downed Casey Watt of host school Notre Dame 6-3, 6-4 prior to his matchup against Rola.
After already playing a pair of singles matches and one doubles contest, Allare was back out on the courts for his doubles match, with Kobelt, vs. Illinois' Dennis Nevolo and Abe Souza. The Buckeye tandem won by a 9-8 (8) score. In the semifinals, Allare and Kobelt handed Timon Reichelt and Alexander Pelaez of Illinois State a 9-8 (5) loss.
The last Buckeye tandem to win the doubles title at regionals was Kronauge and Drew Eberly (2005-08) in 2007.
Devin McCarthy and Balazs Novak also advanced to the semifinals, but dropped an 8-5 decision to Nevolo and Souza (Illinois).
The Buckeyes are back in action Friday when they travel to the Big Ten Singles championship in East Lansing, Mich. The tournament runs through Sunday.

I mean why waste the gas money. Just mail us the trophy from East Lansing and the other 10 teams can play for fun.

Interesting theory because last year only Steven Williams of the Bucks competed at the B 10 indoor tournament.
Several of the other team members, iirc opted to compete at a professional tournament in Florida.
On the 2010-11 OSU Tennis schedule there is a noticable overlap/double booking this weekend with the B10 Indoor and the "Charlottesville Challenger." The Challenger is an ITF sponsored tournament for pros on the satellite tour and would better prepare the Buckeyes for a matchup with the likes of UVA, USC, Tennessee, etc.

Litl I apologize for saying there is no way Buchanan could receive an invitation into this tournament. There are 32 not 16 invitations.
Here is the selection criteria from the ITA website.
Singles: (32 draw)
12 regional Champions
8 All-American Quarterfinalists
1 Super Bowl Champion
1 Host Wildcard
1 USTA Wildcard
2 ITA Wildcards
7 At-Large

This website lists the 32 single's players who will be competing at Flushing Meadows and Chase Buchanan obviously received one of the at-large or wildcard invitations!

No problem. You know what they say about a blind squirrel. I would think (hoping) they might want the best of the best in that tournament and I would think that Chase would fall into that class which makes me ask do you have any idea why he performed so poorly last weekend:huh:

OSU Tennis site:

Six members of the Ohio State men's tennis team will see action this weekend.
Junior Steven Williams, plus a trio of redshirt-freshmen in Peter Kobelt, Wyatt Lippert and Nelson Vick will head north to East Lansing, Mich., for the 2010 Big Ten Indoor Singles Championship.
Junior Chase Buchanan and freshman Blaz Rola will compete at the Charlottesville Challenger in Charlottesville, Va. Both events will take place Friday through Sunday. . . .
Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, who teamed up for doubles action at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional, will compete individually at the Charlottesville Challenger.
Rola, the second-rated freshman nationally in the latest ITA rankings, is coming off a stellar singles performance at the regional, winning the singles championship over teammate Matt Allare 7-5, 6-4.
Buchanan, the No. 1-seeded player in the regional, advanced to the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles main draw action.

And an article published Thursday on the MSU site
Big Ten Indoor Championships.
. . . Matches will be held primarily at the MSU indoor tennis facility, with select matches being played at the Michigan Athletic Club. Play will begin tomorrow with doubles action starting at 9 a.m. and singles competition following on Saturday at 8 a.m., Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and Monday at 9 a.m.

Looks as if the Buckeyes will be playing doubles as well as singles at the 2010 Big Ten Indoor Singles Championship!
Find it interesting that Vick, Kobelt and Lippert are described by the official site as "red shirt Freshmen" meaning that they did not use their 1st year of eligibility last year.:)
Also looks like Allare, Novak, and McCarthy are sitting out the competition this weekend.:(

Go Bucks!:oh:

WOW the Baby Buckeyes are already playing like veterans. The future of Buckeye tennis is looking very bright. Is Allare a Senior or Junior? Amazing to be this good and be this young.

Yep! This weekend in East Lansing will tell much about the bottom of the lineup for the 2011 spring season.

Check out this new video of Senior Matt Allare describing the strong single's and double's performance at the ITA midwest region.

He is a senior according to the link below. Do not know if he has a redshirt year in him or not. However, this roster is not very accurate when a clumps to including redshirt years or even who is on the team.

Don 't quite understand this. I wonder why Ty did not send these guys to play in the Big Ten indoor Championships. If he would have sent these three guys along with the young pups, they probably could win the championship with all of the other good Big Ten players playing over in Virginia. I guess Tucker doesn't put much stock in the indoor championship unless I am missing something else. Perhaps they need to catch up on their studies:)

gracelhk,

Buckeyes have been knocking on the door the last couple of years. What do you think of their chances this year to get over the hump and bring the NCAA championship home?

Thanks for asking ORD
I like their chances, if I was a handicapper, I would guess the UVa would have to be considered the favorites for 2011.
After that it is a strong contending field with USC, tOSU, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, et al wanting to make a mark.
I was concerned about losing #2 Kronauge and #3 Marcan from last year's B10 champion and NCAA quarterfinalist team. I felt there would be some dropoff and the need to move up some players to the places vacated. Tucker however, has done some outstanding recruiting with Freshman Blas Rola (ranked #388 in the world) and a new recruit (January 2011) from the Netherlands Ille Van Engelen who was ITA ranked around 1200. Both have played on the European Pro tour and are major additions to a very strong team.
The best match at the Osu varsity indoor tennis center this year may very well be the showdown in practice between Chase Buchanan and Blas Rola to see who will carry the mantle of the #1 singles player for tOSU.
Go Bucks!
