Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

OSU Tennis site recap of Friday's action at the ITA All American Tournament in Tulsa.

official tennis site

- Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, a newly formed Ohio State men's tennis doubles tandem, advanced to the semifinals of the 2010 D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships Friday after recording impressive back-to-back wins at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Buchanan and Rola opened the day with an 8-5 win over qualifier Aleksey Bessonov and Rifat Biktyakov of Oklahoma State. The Buckeye duo then faced No. 2-seed Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher of Stanford and dispatched the Cardinal tandem by another 8-5 score. Buchanan (New Albany, Ohio) and Rola (Ptuj, Slovenia) will face the winner between Florida's Alexandre Lacroix and Nassim Slilam and Virginia's Alex Domijan and Jarmere Jenkins Saturday.
After winning an early-morning consolation singles match, Matt Allare was forced to withdraw from the tournament because of injury. Allare, a native of Mason, Ohio, was going to face No. 1-seed John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee in the consolation quarterfinals Saturday. Smith was upset in the first round of the main draw Thursday.
Allare's injury also impacted his and classmate's Shuhei Uzawa's consolation doubles match Friday afternoon. The pair was up 4-1 against Kevin King and Juan Spir of Georgia Tech before withdrawing. Allare and Uzawa (Chiba, Japan) beat Chris Konigsfeldt and Pedro Zerbini of California, 8-3, earlier in the day.

Congratulations Chase and Blas! They will face the Florida pair Lacroix and Sliloam tomorrow in the semis.
Sorry to hear about the injury Matt, you had an awesome run in the tourney. Get well Soon!

We might be unstoppable in doubles this year...If we win doubles we will smoke most teams head to head...its been a weakness. I e-mailed the B10 network about Tennis. Unfortunately no response yet. Very excited about the season and this team.

For the first time since 2004, an Ohio State men's tennis duo has the opportunity to win a major ITA championship as duo Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola advanced to the final of the 2010 D'Novo/ITA All-American Championship Saturday. The pair will face No. 3 seed Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz of Virginia Sunday at the Case Tennis Center. . .
En route to the final matchup, Buchanan (New Albany, Ohio) and Rola (Ptuj, Slovenia) downed Florida's Alexandre Lacroix and Nassim Slilam 6-4, 6-3.

Finals in the All American double's tournament was held Sunday 10 am, just finished with UVa winning by a 6-4,6-7, 6-3 score.
congratulations Chase and Blaz on a great tournament and Go Bucks!

Down 6-5 in the second set and Virginia serving for the match, the Ohio State men's tennis doubles team of Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola broke back and played a tiebreaker in which they won , 7-4, to force a third and deciding set in the final of the 2010 D'Novo/ITA All-American Championship Sunday. However, despite rallying, the Buckeye duo was broken in the second game of the third set to fall into an early 2-0 deficit they could not overcome. In the end, the Cavalier pair of Michael Shabaz and Drew Courtney won 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3 for the doubles title at the Case Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Buchanan and Rola challenged the service game of Virginia the entire match despite the score. . . .
The Buckeyes will continue fall action Oct. 21-25 when they travel to South Bend, Ind. for the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.

Hard to get much info from the ITA and Ohio State's website combined when it comes tennis. I am afraid come next spring, barring any injuries, it will be very difficult to beat UVA in the NCAA's. I am pretty sure, but not totally sure, that this is the same UVA doubles team that won the whole thing last year so maybe we can go for another rematch if we do not see them again for a while. I also, thought I noticed, that one of their singles players lost in the finals but I am not completely sure of that.

So, Mr. Tennis it is up to you to keep us updated and the big question is can The Ohio State University beat, what seems to be a top loaded, UVA team or will our depth take care of that. Perhaps, it will all come down to the draws and the seeding which you know much more about:osu:

Litl you are right about UVa, they are absolutely loaded.
In the preseason ITA single's rankings, they had 4 players in the top 30.
ITA rankings
Shabbaz #6
Singh #13
Courtney #27
Jenkins #29.

When the next ranking comes out in January, it would not be surprising to see the newest UVA recruit Domijan ranked top ten in the NCAA's on the strength of his championship victory at the ITA All Americans.
So yes, UVa is loaded in singles and doubles and appears to be the favorite for the NCAA team championship next May.

man, been missing out on all the tennis stuff :(

I really wish my school (univ of west florida) could compete at div1 tennis, think they would hang really well with a lot of schools, they dominate at the div2 level, and a couple of the kids beat a couple players from UF in a futures tournament last year

I agree they are loaded by UVA finds a way to lose alot. The choke frequently and lose to squads they shouldn't. I guess it happens to everyone but they have dropped the ball more than a few times in recent past with all-star teams.
I agree with you some UVA teams have been very good and have lost in the NCAA's, even some that have been loaded, but this year they are more than just loaded. It's almost like everyone else should play for second place:(

Ty keeps loading up on talent!

Official OSU Tennis site

Ohio State men's tennis head coach, Ty Tucker, has announced Ille Van Engelen, a native of the Netherlands, will join the Buckeyes in time for the spring schedule in January.
"Ille is a very talented student-athlete," Tucker, the recipient of five-consecutive Big Ten Coach of the Year honors, said. "He has an extremely good left-handed serve and should be ready to see much action when he arrives in January. He has a wealth of experience on the international scene."
The southpaw has been competing on the men's international circuit since July 2009. In singles action, he qualified for the USA F22 Futures, advancing to the quarterfinals in September 2009. He also qualified for the Estonia F1 Futures in July.
Van Engelen also has seen success on the doubles circuit. He has competed in seven Futures tournaments in the past year, advancing to the quarterfinals in four events, each with a different partner.
Van Engelen finished 2009 ranked No. 1,323 in the ATP standings and has improved to No. 1,273 in 2010.

Looks like a great athlete, a lefthander with a lot of potential.
According to his Profile, he started playing tennis at 18 years old and has been playing on the futures tour but only for the last year.
Welcome to the Buckeye family Ille.

and of Junior Chase Buchanan

And an article from the Official website about the Buckeyes preparation for the ITA NCAA regionals at Notre Dame Thursday through Monday.
The Ohio State men's tennis team will continue its 2010-11 fall campaign Thursday at the 2010 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Qualifying singles will begin Thursday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion followed by main draw singles and doubles action Friday. . . .
BUCKEYES IN MAIN DRAW SINGLES
Nine members of the team qualified for the main draw of regionals, including junior Chase Buchanan who earned the No. 1 overall seed in the bracket. Joining Buchanan with a Top 5 seeding is freshman Blaz Rola, who is fifth.
Three other Buckeyes are ranked in the Top 16 of the field, the most of any team in the regional. They are the trifecta of junior Devin McCarthy and seniors Balazs Novak and Matt Allare, who are ranked 13-15, respectively.
Other team members who will get started Friday in main draw action are sophomore Peter Kobelt, senior Shuhei Uzawa, sophomore Nelson Vick and junior Steven Williams. Sophomore Wyatt Lippert will try to earn his way into the main draw beginning Thursday as the fourth-seeded player in the qualifying rounds.
DOUBLES DRAW DELIGHT
In doubles action, 10 Buckeyes will compete in the main draw. The duo of Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola is the No. 1 seed overall, giving Buchanan the No. 1 seed in both the singles and doubles main draw competitions. The tandem of Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt are ranked No. 5, while Balazs Novak and Devin McCarthy are No. 8. Also competing for Ohio State are the teams of Steven Williams and Nelson Vick, and Wyatt Lippert and Shuhei Uzawa.

Just a few notes and observations;

Nine Buckeyes were selected for the main draw (out of 56) and 5 were awarded top 16 seeds!
(It looks like a challenge/nightmare for the one who designs the draw sheet to arrange brackets that do not have Buckeyes competing in the first or second rounds.)
Five Buckeye double's teams were selected for the double's main draw and 3 were seeded in the top 8.
Only the winners of the single's and double's regional tournaments will advance to the finals at New York in November.
Matt Allare seems to have recovered from the injury that forced him to withdraw from the All American tournament.
The double's pairing of Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt is new and looks more like a basketball front line 6' 7" and 6' 7" of intimidating stature.
Blaz Rola is the real deal and Bucks would love to see him make a deep run in this tournament.

7 Buckeyes advance to the second round.
Kobelt played the match of his life but Jung of TSUN held on for a 6-4 final set.
First round doubles is on now with 4 of the 5 Buckeye teams in action, Buchanan and Rola have a bye.
