After five days of pre-qualifying and qualifying at the 2010 D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships, main draw singles and doubles action will get underway Thursday. The Ohio State men's tennis team boasts two singles participants, as well as a pair of doubles teams at the prestigious ITA event held at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Blaz Rola, a freshman from Ptuj, Slovenia, survived the qualifying draw and will begin Thursday bright and early with an 8 a.m. CT start vs. No. 11 Austin Krajicek of Texas A&M. No. 5 Chase Buchanan will also begin his bid for the singles title against an Aggie when he starts play at 10 a.m. CT against Jeff Dadamo.
Rola and Buchanan will then be back out on the courts Thursday evening as the two will pair up at 6 p.m. CT to take on No. 7 Brad Cox and Eric Quigley of Kentucky.
The duo of Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa won three consecutive matches, including a victory over sixth-seed Drake Bernstein and Javier Garrapiz of Georgia, 8-6, in their opening match, to continue on to the main draw. Allare and Uzawa will face No. 1 Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha of Duke at 6:30 p.m. CT Thursday.
Allare came one win of making an appearance in the singles main draw. Following back-to-back wins in the qualifying round, the Mason, Ohio, native dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Chris Kearney of UC Irvine. In his opening match, Allare downed No. 7 Luka Somen of Virginia Tech, 7-6, 6-4.
Junior Devin McCarthy also nearly made a successful run in the qualifying bracket, which included a 6-4, 7-5 win over No. 13 Tucker Vorster of Mississippi. However, in the next match, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native lost a hard-fought 6-3, 1-6, 4-6 match to No. 2 Artem Baradach of SMU.
Peter Kobelt, a Central Ohio product out of New Albany, won four-straight matches in pre-qualifying and qualifying action before eventually falling, 2-6, 6-2, 4-6 to Oklahoma's Tsvetan Mihov. . .
