Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

Rola is rolling at Flushing Meadows ITA/USTA indoor Intercollegiate Tennis championships.
Blaz won his 2nd match of the day 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) over Austin Krajicek of Texas A & M to advance to the semifinals Saturday.
For Rola that makes 9 straight victories all in tournament competition.
The task does not get easier as he will face the only seed left in the tournament in the semis, Steve Johnson of USC, the defending ITA Indoor champion.
Saturday's match is scheduled to start "not before 12:30 pm".
Buckeye fans can monitor the action on live match stats.

Go Blaz and Go Bucks!

Recap of Friday's action from the OSU tennis site;

Blaz Rola, a freshman on the Ohio State men's tennis team, advanced to the semifinals of the National Indoor Intercollegiate championships Friday. Rola, who hails from Ptuj, Slovenia, won back-to-back matches at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., to extend his winning streak to nine.
In his first match of the day, Rola handed Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine a 6-3, 6-2 defeat before winning a tightly contested 6-4, 7-6 (1) decision against Texas A&M's Austin Krajicek. Rola will now face seventh seed Steve Johnson of USC Saturday.
Nearly 24 hours ago Chase Buchanan rallied from a 5-3 second-set deficit to win in straight sets 6-2, 7-5, against No. 14 Tucker Vorster of Mississippi, but could not piece together the same result Friday as he dropped a 6-3, 6-4 match to Gonzalo Escobar of Texas Tech.
In the Friday morning action, Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt had their seven-match win streak snapped when the duo dropped a close 8-6 decision to Texas A&M's Jeff Dadamo and Krajicek, who are the fourth-ranked doubles tandem in the ITA preseason rankings.

From the Official OSU Tennis Site;

Blaz Rola, a freshman on the Ohio State men's tennis team, concluded the fall season Saturday with a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Steve Johnson of USC in the semifinals of the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Columbia University is hosting the prestigious event at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home of the U.S. Open, in Flushing, N.Y.
Johnson quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, which proved costly for the Buckeye from Ptuj, Slovenia. The second set was more closely contested, but Johnson was able to win a late break for the set and match win.
Rola entered the semifinals with an impressive nine-match winning streak, having already knocked off the No. 2-seed Eric Quigley (Kentucky) earlier in the tournament. Rola concludes the fall campaign with a 13-2 record in singles.
Ohio State kicks off the spring season Jan. 26, when Butler and Xavier travel to Columbus. The Buckeyes will face the Bulldogs at noon and will host the Musketeers at 6 p.m. at the Ohio State Varsity Indoor Tennis Center.

Mr. Tennis, you forgot to give Hunter an official welcome to the Ohio State Family with one of these:groove2:Welcome to the Ohio State Family Hunter:)
Coach Tucker must be a very good teacher with the limited scholarships that he has to get all of these big-name recruits to come to Ohio State.

Information from the OSU official tennis website

Ty Tucker, head coach of the Ohio State men's tennis team, announced Hunter Callahan of Ambler, Pa., has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Buckeyes beginning in 2011-12.
"We are very excited to have Hunter Callahan join the Buckeye Family," Tucker, who has entered his 12th season as head coach of the Buckeyes, said. "He has had great results, fantastic coaching, but most importantly we feel Hunter will do what it takes to be great. I look forward to working with him in the near future."
Recently capturing the Evert ITF Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla., this past Sunday, Callahan is No. 9 in the boys' 18 polls after ranking as high as No. 14 in the boys' 16 standings. He also owns the No. 1 ranking in the boys' 18 and 16 middle states polls.
Callahan, the 14th-ranked recruit in the nation, has made several impressive runs in his prep career as he prepares for his arrival to Columbus next season. Under the direction of Marco Martizi, who has coached Callahan the past six years in Boca Raton, Callahan has:

  • Captured the Evert ITF Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla.
  • Won the boys' 18 singles title at the National Open in Aston, Pa.
  • Finished sixth in the boys' 16 bracket at the USTA National Clay Courts tournament
  • Advanced to the round of 16 at the Junior National Tennis Championship in Kalamazoo, Mich., and the boys' 18 Naples ITF clay event
  • Qualified for the semifinals of the G4 ITF event in Naples, Fla., and was runner-up in doubles

Callahan is ranked the #273 Junior in the world by ITF

His most recent accomplishment was a victory at the prestigious Evert ITF Junior event which attracted international competition. Callahan was the #4 seed and prevailed with a win over the #3 seed on Saturday.

Yes the updates by Lil and Gracelhink are much appreciated!!! Thanks guys!!!

You are welcome BP!

The OSU official tennis website has linked the newly published 2010-2011 OSU Tennis Guide
(24 pages on PDF format)

Lots of fascinating reading of the 100 years of OSU tennis including an in depth look at why this decade is the best ever of Buckeye tennis.
It also features in depth analysis and what we might expect from this year's team.

DOMINANT IN COLUMBUS

There are a lot of teams that perform well in their home venues,
but the Buckeyes are in a class of their own. Ohio State has won
108-consecutive home matches and that streak is the longest
home winning streak not only in school history but in the Big Ten
Conference. No other Big Ten team in any sport has won as many
games in a row at home than the Buckeyes. Tucker has guided the
Scarlet and Gray to the astonishing record, which dates back to
2002-03.

BIG TEN BEST

After winning five-consecutive Big Ten regular season and tournament
titles, the Buckeyes will aim to defend their title again this
year. Last season, Ohio State recorded a combined Big Ten singles
record of 58-2 and a total Big Ten doubles record of 18-8. Ohio
State has won 66-consecutive matches against Big Ten opponents
and now is a winner of 118 of its last 123 league contests, including postseason play.

looks like he took a very similar path through high school:wink2: that Chase Buchanan did. Chase also started at The Ohio State University early and Callahan seems to want to do the same thing. Very interesting:) I wonder if he will break the "starting lineup" like Chase.

Good observation and have to agree Litl about the lineup come January.
Obviously Buchanan and Rola will battle for the 1 and 2 spots, and as you note--it will be quite interesting to see how the 3-6 single's positions fill out. There will be some huge intrasquad battles for the starting lineup.
Novak & Allare have to be locks for two of the slots 3-6. The other two single's spots should feature some heavy competition between the newest Buckeyes Ille Van Engelen (#1188 ranked in the ITA professional tour), Kevin Metka and Hunter Callahan (#14 ranked HS senior in the U.S.).
They will be in the mix with veterans Devin McCarthy, Peter Kobelt, Shuhei Uzawa, Nelson Vick (Big Ten tourney champ), Steven Williams and Wyatt Lippert.
Nine players competing for 2 spots?
Talk about an abundance of riches!
